Anyways, does anyone have any recommendations for a dystopian future/Blade Runner-esque comic?
Paul Pope has some cool near-future stuff. Check out Heavy Liquid and 100%, and even Batman: Year 100.

Transmetropolitan might be the most popular American cyberpunk comic that I can think of.

Ronin is a straight-up classic.

Hard Boiled is good stuff -- crazy art from Geoff Darrow.

Judge Dredd is a whole rabbit whole you can have fun going down.

The Incal is the mack-daddy of all cyberpunk comics.

As far as manga, in addition to Akira there's Appleseed, Battle Angel Alita and Urasawa's Pluto.

I have not. I suppose I ought to though. I didn't realize that was a cyberpunk comic.
Thanks for bringing that up!

AKIRA is amazing, but a little heads up, it's something like 2000 pages long and is collected in six volumes. If you're interested in cyberpunk stuff though, you definitely need to check it iut.

Ok, my wife signed up for Neogaf, in 2008 when I did. Her account still does not have posting privileges. She is ready to talk comics, who should I ask about this?

I second this. It's an amazing series. The king of amazingly detailed panels of destruction. Pages and pages of it. It's glorious.

YES! For great cyber-punk stuff, check out Paul Pope. Gorgeous art and really interesting story-telling especially the three mentioned above. 100% is his sci-fi magnum opus, but the other two would still qualify as lite sci-fi/grounded future stories.

Yeah, Otomo's art is just breathtaking at times. I'm pretty overdue for a reread, need to make time for that.

This reminds me. I want to pick up the Akira volumes, but I'm not sure about which version. Is this the recommended one?

I just read volume 1. Liked it a lot looking forward to more. Stupid questions,, is Batman and Robin an on-going comic right now .

Yeah, it's currently Batman and... Since Damian's heroic ass exit, it's been Batman and a rotating cast. I have to say, these issues have been the best ones. Tomasi and Gleason mined Bruce's grief so incredibly that this is the series where you feel Damian's lose and Bruce's utter despair. I love this series and think anybody who loved Morrison's run or wants the emotion sorely lacking in Snyder's should check this comic out.

Yes. there's 6 B&W phone book sized GNs

That looks like a newer release of what I have, so I would think so. My copies are 13 or 14 years old at this point, I have the original English trade releases from Dark Horse.

Cool, thanks, dudes. I'll save up and rafa-out on those soon. It's always a comic I see David Brothers and Witzke name-drop, and I loved the movie, so it's probably about time to delve into the source material.

I think they're the same, down to the westernized pages. Kodansha just does their own business overseas now.

Makes sense, since the covers look identical to what I have.

I freaking love the movie, but man the manga is so much better it's not even funny. There is so much more story that never made it to the movie.

I wonder if I still have my Tetsuo figure packed away somewhere... hmm.

Ostensibly, everything is fleshed out in comparison to the movie, so I look forward to being swayed toward finding something likeable in Tetsuo. Actually, more depth for Konnie would be great too.

It was also a situation like what Bryan Lee O'Malley/Edgar Wright went through with Scott Pilgrim. In both cases the movie came out before the comic was actually finished, so there's definitely some differences.

Yeah, the film's ending feels pretty natural as a climax and it's that way with the manga too, but once you reach that part in the manga you realize you still got 1000 pages left.

Very cool. These two pieces almost got commissioned in the Gaf Poster thread, and I think they're both incredibly rad. The artist is Ash Thorp

Thank you so much for these recommendations! The funny thing is that almost all of the things you listed were things I vaguely wanted to check out, but didn't realize that they were exactly the kind of thing I'm looking to read right now.
I've been meaning to read Paul Pope but haven't gotten around to it yet; Transmetropolitan is something I'm sure I'll like since I'm a massive Hunter S. Thompson fan, but I haven't got around to that yet either; Ronin I just completely forgot took place in the future (the cover makes me assume it takes place in ancient Japan) but seeing that Miller is one of my all-time favorite writers and his near-future stuff in Martha Washington was what got me wanting to read more future stuff, this is absolutely perfect; Hard Boiled I knew I wanted to read because I love Miller, but didn't realize it was also near future; The Incal I looked into one time and thought it looked cool but then kinda forgot about it, but now that it's in the realm of what I want to read, I'm very interested.

All of that probably means very little to you, but essentially, thank you so much for those recommendations! That was perfect.
I didn't realize the stuff I was looking for to read was right in front of me this whole time. Haha. I'll probably be picking up a good majority of those in the near future!

Hopefully I can find the time/convince myself to spend the money to check this out soon. Your enthusiasm has me excited about it!

Also, speaking of amazingly detailed panels of destruction, have you guys read James Stokoe's Godzilla: Half-Century War? That's some insanely detailed destruction.

Everything about 100% seems right up my alley. Thanks for the recommendation!

I have and it was surprisingly good. His art reminds me of Otomo's as well. Good destruction art for sure

Is Infinity that good? It's the #1 seller on instocktrades right now and it looks pretty cool when I looked at it.

Edit: Considering getting the first two uncanny xmen books too...

6GG #1

Pretty cool first issue. Do these people in the war know
they are being televised? That's what I gathered but wasn't 100% sure.

Edit, nvm. 1st page issue 2 explains everything.

Oof. Bronson. Why did you have to mention The Incal? It seems so cool. And it's so expensive. And it also has like four off-shoots of that main book. And they're also so expensive.

The Incal is really the only one you need. There's a ton of editions out there -- the Classic Collection is probably the most reasonably-priced.

Maybe check your local library?

6GG #2

Six part mini series planned. This is perfect execution for 2 issues in. I remember being at the LCS and looking at some back issues of these and remember not being impressed by them by just flipping through them. Now that I'm reading them and digesting the art, really great so far. Don't judge a book by its cover. Lol.

Ah okay. Good to know. It's still quite pricey though, especially for 300 pages.

And that's definitely a good idea. I haven't checked the library since I first got into comics about 6 months ago, so I probably ought to head back and see what's what now that I know what I'm looking for. I'm mostly hoping that they'll have Akira.

Started reading Sex Criminals. It's pretty good but I'd like to buy the IP from Fraction and replace the creative team with Grant Morrison and Rob Liefeld. I think they would really hit that concept out of the park.

Transmetropolitan is the reason I'm into comics. Well, that and early fables. I highly recommend it. And I don't know if you've read it yet, but six gun gorilla is perfection. A little along the lines of a dystopian future I guess. It's the book I'm going to buy like 5 copies of in trade and just spread its gospel to all my friends who read comics.

Guys, I just read Green Lantern #20. My God, what an epic end! I'm speechless. If the book had ended there the Green Lanterns would still be the best super hero book to me.
