COMICS! |OT| February 2015. No ship girls. Oh, we got a Tank Girl though!

To be fair, the impending demise of the comic book store is a trend that's coming to hit brick and mortar in general, as direct delivery becomes more and more popular

Can't quite see a way around it outside of sheer legislative brute force to make people buy locally.

The only successful-enough-to-still-stay-open comic shops I've seen, outside of the mega-ones like Forbidden Planet and Midtown Comics, have to hock every other form of collectible to stay afloat, and then some. My old shop had to convert half of its space into a fucking longboard shop and had a bootleg as Blockbuster system where you could "rent" games and dvds. The comics weren't making the shop any cash.

Which is insane because I know the # breakdown of how much retail gets per book and it's HUGE. Major problem is over ordering, folks who don't pick up their books (I'm guilty of this) and not having enough space for overstock.

There is a shop(won't name it but you can figure it out) that is constantly buying more and more warehouse space because their overstock situation is just out of hand. At some point they're going to have to bite the bullet and get rid of all their backlist stock because it just cost too much to warehouse books no one wants that they over ordered.

My comic shop sent out his weekly email like always in January and he thanked all of us and said every aspect of his business grew in 2014. That's with 2 other shops within 10 miles.

As I've gotten into comics over the past few years, I have noticed a lot of people seem to really like the omnibus editions. In theory they seem awesome. You get a lot of issues in a nice book for a decent price. The problem is, I hate them. The books are HUGE and unwieldy. They stuff so many pages, in one book, they're usually several inches thick and it makes it hard to read I find. What I love in place of these are things like the Hellboy Library editions or the Invincible Ultimate collections. I was wondering if I was the only one?

Honestly, the only reason I buy floppies is to support my fave titles just a little bit more.

I'd much rather just get trades of everything and read them digitally every month if that was cheaper instead of having floppies everywhere (but my bed hue hue hue wait I don't have a girlfriend :(

You are not. They are terrible and unwieldy.

I love Oversized Hardcovers, optimally, but Absolute (and like those Fear Agents) are pushing it a little size ways.

That said, I'm moving towards digital more and more, just because dusting is boring and takes up time I could be spending reading more comics. It helps if I listen to like a dope Drum N Bass mix while I'm doing it, but it's still dusting and not reading. You can only try and make it so fun.

I think it's because we often aren't given the option for smaller oversized hardcovers, i prefer them as well because Omnibus collections of large page counts tend to sag in the middle. I started putting cardboard under them to try to prevent this but i am skeptical. Give me a sewn oversized hardcover under 20 issues for a decent price over an omnibus.

And as far as pricing goes, i did the complaint thing at 3.99 and am now embracing 4.99 instead. I'm not going to be buying a lot of 4.99 books, but i am not going to complain about it much outside of joking about it every day for a year.

I haven't counted the pages, but aren't $4.99 comics usually longer than $2.99 or $3.99 comics? I could see not wanting to pay $5 for the same number of pages, but if you're getting more comic, it doesn't bother me too much.

That's what we said about 3.99 comics...

I love Omnibus editions but oversized hardcovers like you are referring to are the best. They typically have 10-15 issues in them, The problem is not everything that gets collected in omnibus form gets put out in OHCs

You're not alone. I sold off all my omnibi after having that revelation, I found that I never picked them up off my bookshelf after reading them. I'd much rather have a modestly sized hardcover or hefty TPB any day.

I remember picking up The Walking Dead compendium online because it was cheap and had a ton of issues. I got it in and couldn't believe how big it was. I think I read like 3 issues and never touched it after that because I couldn't stand holding it to read anything. Ended up giving it away to a friend of mine as a birthday present.

What's the deal with Valiant Comics? I had honestly never heard of them up until the last year and I feel like I see their books everywhere.

Really solid line that's gotten even solider over the years. If you can wade through some subpar art in a few of the early books, it's worth going through the entire line from the beginning of the relaunch (except Shadowman but even that has it's moments). They do a connected universe perfectly right, without making things too strained or hard to follow. Just super good stuff.

The best are Archer and Armstrong, Harbinger, Quantum and Woody. All the newer books (the valiant, timewalker, imperium, divinity) are off to fantastic starts too. Just close your eyes and click "add all to cart".

Actually, I'm pretty sure CMX has some super reasonable starter bundles. Probably even some free #1s.

Paolo Rivera's art for The Valiant is what has drawn me in. I just love his work, and the covers really have me interested.

If you're interested in Valiant, check out Scribd. They're offering one month free and they have a ton of Valiant stuff.

Seriously, this service is awesome.

Sounds like you ain't familiar with the Omnibus Reading Position (ORP). It's an advanced level technique but it'll change your life and allow you to love the omnibus the way it was meant to be loved.

I'm disappointed in Comixology and the slow progress they have made in getting their app to feel like a digital comic collection.

oh and i actually really liked Darth Vader #1.

love that they're going with a tightly connected universe so far.

That was soooo good. But what about
That dude that Uncle Palpy was chillin with? The eyeball dude? He looked like what would happen if Greedo banged Mon Mothma

Cant say I agree with that. Do you want to have to dig through digital long boxes and have to throw out the moldy ones for authenticity?

Actually signed up for the free trial on Tuesday. I signed up for Marvel Unlimited on Monday too, but man is that app a piece of shittttttt. Why can't I add an entire run to my library? I have to go through and add each individual issue, and sometimes the issue I want doesn't show up when I look for it even though I know I saw it earlier, but it's not in their stupid view.

How so? I feel like it's a more concise and real version of a collection than my hard to wade through boxes at home.

For example, all this Valiant talk has me downloading all my Valiant books (sans Shadowman) to my iPad Mini as we speak.

Pretty Comic Collectiony, if you ask me.

Is the orp another term for "sitting at a desk"because that's how I read em

The one thing I wish Comixology was better at was sorting and filtering your collection. Like why can't I choose to sort by rating, so I can see all the comics appropriate for my kids. Or why can't I come up with my own tags/labels so I can really fine tune my backlog.

Yeah the way books are organized are kind of shitty. With Avengers for example, the listing for it had three books (I think 1, 2, and 4) and 3 was listed separately despite being part of the same series.

Wish it was more organized but they just launched the comic service so hopefully it improves. The amount of good comics they have is very impressive though and helps a lot.

Maybe he's talking about having everything on your ipad at once? Even then, the files are so tiny you can just re download them whenever from an easy to navigate list. The app is pretty damn good.
I think, he is talking about the list. Its always difficult to access the List with the bought titles, they should also be displayed more stylisher as with an ordinary list. I would like to flip through my collection like I can flip through the issues of a series on the marketplace.

That I would LOVE.

Give me like podcast level functionality. Show me which comics in my gargantuan backlog I haven't read yet, or that I'm halfway through.

ARE YOU READING THIS, ISAK BORG?

I would probably be super nice to anyone i meet, even Bendis...
I met Bendis once at a convention. He wasn't tabling or doing anything official so I didn't want to bug him about comics toomuch. He was pretty nice and gave me some places I should hit up while in Portland since it was my first time there.

on a somewhat related note, I think I'll be doing Rise City Comic Con in September. Portland is a cool town. Not as cool as Austin but still hip.

First thing i want is what they have in the website version, the ability to put issues into an archive to get them out of your cloud list ( ios app is what i'm using). I know i can't store everything on my ipad at once so more customization of your cloud would be nice, the bare minimum is to get rid of all these shitty #1 free issues , annuals, or whatever random stuff i bought that is completely dominating my library.

After that, in the On Device section with grid view, i'd like the option for small grid panels or more customization in that regard and the ability to sort by Publisher or sort it however i want to. Let me group comics how i want, by the number of dinosaurs involved.

^^^^ like what choaffable says because he posts quicker.

My uncle lives in Portland. I would love to move there and work out of the city.

The current model totally needs to change but I don't think anyone has a real game plan on how to do it.

Current system doesn't work for creators and it doesn't work for consumers.

Having random discussion with folks on the retail side and everyone knows a bust is coming and it won't be pretty. It's just not sustainable anymore. It drives me insane because brick & mortar stores are so important and folks just aren't getting how hard it is to run a comic shop these days.
Down with physical comics!

For now they are longer (and not by that much). They will steadily reduce the amount of pages.

He probably means he wants to go to "My Books" and see all of his comic book covers layed out whether they are downloaded or not. Right now, you have to go to purchases, scroll down a list, and then download the comic and go back to another menu to actually read it.

I'm actually a big advocate for physical comics and comic shops.

Buying comics just isn't about going to the store plopping down your money and running the fuck out. I loved working at [redacted] because you go to see folks interact and shoot the shit every Weds. the community that grows around a comic shop is really amazing and if we lose that we lose part of what makes comics great.

I used to do that but they were slow in updating the satellite apps.
I take slowed up satellite apps over the main app every time.
After Amazon took over, the main app became pure shit. I know that Amazon wants the people to buy a Amazon device, where this probably still working like before, but I cant believe that they are honestly thinking people would go to their pc to purchase the books when its way more convinient to buy them the old fashioned way like it works in the Publisher Apps.
I really dont blame Comixology on this point. I assume that Amazon is the evil guy in this case.

Maybe that's the "next-gen" model for comic shops? Emphasize the community bits. Coffee, chairs, the works. Make it a destination rather than a stop.

I think If Isak worked at someplace like CMX he should pitch to them that there should be a comic dating/IM service that is integrated into the app.

Or you can just go to the CMX mobile site on your devices browser, buy your stuff, and have it automatically download in the app. It's not the same as in app purchasing, but it's also not a horrible ordeal.
