All-Star Superman is THE Superman comic book series, a must read for anyone who is interested in the character.

...and DP #7 looks like it'll be awesome, looking forward to it.


Batman Inc #9 was pretty good, still sour over the death of Knight and Damian, but will see how this is gonna go.

She was brought back at the end of the last arc of Bendis' Avengers run. She wasn't actually dead, just trapped in the Microverse at the same spot where she "died" in Secret Invasion. The Avengers got her distress signal and rescued her.

Well OK then. Thanks for clearing it up, I stopped reading Bendis' Avengers some months ago @_@.

Now that I think about it, I've got 0 interest in any of the major Marvel stories going on now lol.

This is an interesting article.

The most annoying thing about the M-Word debate from the past 2 days has been Remender and his supporters dismissing criticism with "it's comics" or "mutants aren't real." YES, OBVIOUSLY. But it also enforces this stupid notion that comics as a medium are somehow immune to criticism due to their subject content. Like shit, go to any journal database and you'll find peer-reviewed articles about Clifford The Big Red Dog. But when the biggest fictional oppression metaphor features some shady assimilationist rhetoric, it's all: "you joyless goober, just read it and enjoy."

I wish they'd do regular hardcovers without obnoxious dust jackets. I've never understood the point of those. Why does Kamandi Vol 2 need one when the actual hard covers are glossy and inked too? At least some of the smaller publishers do without the dust jackets.

Rucka must be entirely done with DC and Marvel. He'd already left DC and then he said Marvel gave him a good deal with tons of freedom for Punisher, and then that's stripped away too. He'll never believe their 'promises' again.

Dude, you say that, but it's pretty clear that the X-Men have come over the years to represent anyone who's ever been a victim of oppression because of who they were. And that's something that's still very fucking real today. So, when a message like, "let's just start pretending our differences don't exist instead of cherishing them", yeah, people are gonna be pissed.

Saying "it's just comic books" is a bullshit excuse, because it's always something more. Heck, that's why we have a fucking monthly discussion thread. It's because it means something special to us.

That is one view point. But here is another; Mutants (or other powered/cosmic folk) in the Marvel universe, or Metahumans/Aliens in the DCU represent something that hasn't really existed in the real world; People, creatures, entities, capable of widespread death and destruction on a scale almost inconceivable. We're talking about people who get into fights that wreck buildings/cities/worlds. It's entirely different from "You have black skin, or are gay." I wouldn't have to worry about a gay person dropping a bus on me. But just like that, the guy next to me could hulk out, and that's it. People would have a legitimate reason to fear that kind of power. And want to contain it.

Mutants were different, and that was enough. Maybe people are so far away from the original inspiration of the X-men themes that they just see them as another group of superheroes. But they were created and written to be more than just dangerous dudes it makes sense to be wary of. Dangerous mutants aren't the norm, but everyone who was different got treated like they were dangerous. And the point was to show that "Mutants" could be accepted, they were just as human as anyone else. They weren't 'humans that just happened to be mutants', they were mutants fighting for the same rights that everybody else had.

Maybe this is part of the plot. Maybe Alex is compensating for having his brother be a Mutant freedom fighter. Maybe he is uncomfortable with his being a mutant. I mean...lets face it. Alex has always had issues, and was never ever even once as well put together or level headed as Scott. He was always a hothead with a chip on his shoulder. So lets see how well this cookie crumbles.

I think Remender with Havok was trying to say being a mutant doesn't define me. Since that is a stance a lot of people take. That being known for being something great while emphasizing the minority makes the minority look inferior.

EDIT: Remender just had enough of the trolls and several x-fans constantly giving him shit over twitter. I really don't agree with what he said but shit if I had to put up with that shit, I would of blown a casket as well.

Honestly, I think Hopeless and Spencer both have a better future. Hopeless does great new characters, his pacing and plotting needs help and he needs to do research better. Spencer, same thing. They have good ideas, just executing them is god awful.

Great editorial on the Havok mess over at Comics Alliance

Havok's speech makes a huge leap from, "my minority identity doesn't define me" to a rejection of minority identity. Havok is a mutant, but he says the word is divisive and that it represents everything he hates. He asks people not to use it. He is, definitively and explicitly, self-loathing about his identity.

There is an implication in Havok's speech that "mutant" is a slur, "the "m" word," -- which, whether the writer intended for it to or not, very obviously draws parallels to the n-word -- but it's the word mutants use to describe themselves. It can be used pejoratively -- as can "gay", "girl", "black", "Jew" -- but it's still the definitive linguistic presentation of a minority identity.

Even if "mutant" were a slur beyond reclamation, Havok presents no alternative language. The movement away from the terms "negro" and "colored" to identifiers like "African-American" wasn't about rejecting labels. It was about rejecting the labels forced upon you and choosing your own. But when a reporter asks Havok what he wants to be called, he says, "How about Alex?"

The speech leaves us to believe that Havok doesn't want there to be any word that describes his minority identity. He's not saying that he's not just a mutant, but that "mutant" is not among the things he wants to admit to being.

That's not a message of inclusion. That's a message of assimilation. That's a message of erasure.

I'm gonna say yes on Hopeless, because his Cable and X-Force stuff is fun 90s throwback with modern sensibilites, but Spencer's Secret Avengers should be proof that the guy cannot come up with a good idea to save his fucking life, and that he lucked out on the Cloak and Dagger mini because he had Emma fucking Rios.

And UXF is totally good now I swear, first issue was rough but it's a nice crazy little book about people who don't give a fuck.

BUT SPEAKING OF CRAP, Way was canned from Thunderbolts.

I doubt Remender and Havok meant those comments to be a definitive or concluding statement of how all mutants should be seen or want to be seen with a disregard for everyone's personal circumstance. More like a start of how he wants attitudes to change.

At the same time, there were much better ways to write that. All he has to say is "Yes I'm a mutant but that doesn't define me, it doesn't stop me from being as human as you or your family. My name is Alex. Yes I am a mutant, but I am a still a person." Or some crap like that.

Hey, anyone here use a 7-inch tablet for reading comics? How's the view/readability? I might be getting a great deal on a Samsung Tab 2 7inch tomorrow and I need some quick opinions.

I personally wouldn't. My eyesight sucks, but even on the iPad sometimes I like to zoom in or go guided reading view or whatever the fuck it's called. I would think 7" would be too small to read comics comfortably, unless you have amazing eyesight and still don't mind some zooming. etc.

I liked the Havok speech, and hated UA up to this new issue that felt like a fresh start although it was filled with typical Remender Jobbing and now with narration boxes -- WOLVERINE IS TAKEN OUT IN ONE HIT BY SPECIAL POWER meme.

Identifying yourself as a "mutant" just never made sense. Mutant is just sewer alligator and glowing ooze imagery prone. Maybe they'll find a better term including an X or something along the way to commemorate Professor Xavier (Xuman?), that isn't quite HOMO SUPERIOR levels of arrogance, but the term mutant is just too negative. It just means "weirdly different", a word of isolation. By working on a team like the Avengers, its all to sort of show those boundries coming down where these are just super powered people rather than two different sets ( I was bitten by a radiactive thing vs My dad worked too close to a power-plant).

it means an organism that has mutated. what is a mutation? A change or alteration in nature, form, or quality. the popular, negative meaning, sure. But other words have unnecessary or non-inherent negative meanings too...

"why's it always gotta be about species, guise?"

edit: I never liked "Magik". But Illyana and Lockheed were my peeps.
