Comic GAF I'm proud to present a new comic book experiment. Now that I have marvel unlimited and with recent spidey chatter with the movie I've been motivated to read an issue of spidey every day. So slowly but surely ill chip away through a full run.

I've read the classic issues up through around the death of Gwen with the old black and white essential tbps. But this is the first time seeing it I. Color.

Right now I'm through issue #2

Some random observations so far.
- Stan lee forgot Parker's name in the second story of issue #1 or something. He's called Peter Palmer throughout it. Haha
- Ditkos art is great
- it's amazing how dense the older comics are in panels and words per panel. Takes a lot more time for a given issue.
- it's funny how every line or caption ends with an exclamation point. I wonder when comics would get away from that standard.

Superior made a great callback to that.

Ove been reading the older issues as well as I get them, and I really like them. Unfortunately, right now I can't afford any with Ditko art, but Romita Sr are probably my favorites. Stories are good and Peter is fun to follow.

Also saw this on CGC forums, its old, but new to me, and thought it was pretty funny. Was a pretty big fan of Bob Kane in my childhood, as he was the "creator" of my favorite hero, and even my Mom knew who he was. Enjoy the Steranko story :p

Oh and JJ is running NOW magazine and not the daily bugle to start. I wonder when they make the switch. It's odd because there are parts when peter is reading the bugle

Saga has beautiful art. Let's not start on Fiona Staples. She has done nothing wrong.

Fiona staples gave us the best/cutest page of the year thus far.spoilers for SAGA I suppose. Dem feels.

Could always take the Tragicomedy school of argumentation route and say "butwhataboutthebackgrounds" "even people on ign are making fun of the backgrounds, or lackthereof" and "I showed my moms the book and she said I drew backgrounds better when I was kid using ketchup as crayon"

Yo, I think Saga is beautiful art.

I was gonna go off on you. But you didn't fully commit.

Wasn't meant to be a slight against Fiona or Saga--I genuinely enjoy and praise both. Just meant to show how goofy some attempted arguments about comic art can be.

Now back to the matter at hand. Pulido fucking rules and She-Hulk is a damn fine comic. It's so good that the fill-ins/artist breather issues are Ron fucking Wimberly.

Everybody do themselves a favor and follow Steranko and go back and read all his tweets, he's got some incredible stories.

I wish Pulido was doing the fill in issues. The story has been good so far and I'm enjoying the book I just wish he could nail those faces.

Steranko stole Kane's soul with that slap and Kane couldn't do anything about it.

I laugh every time I think about that story. Steranko's one of my favorite follows on Twitter.

I've seen stuff like that at least a few times in old comics, and it always makes me chuckle. The one I always remember is in the one where Iron Man meets Angel from the Xmen he's called Anthony Blake. I guess someone got confused and combined him with Thor!

Arguing that some of Saga's backgrounds are a bit plain (some are amazing) is fine. I can see that.

Comparing that to Quitely's complete inability to draw a face is a totally different kind of monster.

I'm glad you like Staples' art. She's pretty freaking amazing.

Hah that's great. This one caught me off guard because apparently in the essential spidey trade I got earlier they corrected the error.

I really like Saga and Fiona Staples, but her lack of backgrounds is the one big strike I have against her. Saga is a big sci-fi worldbuilding book, so fleshing out the universe with background details and making it seem more tangible is a BIG thing, like the worlds of Star Wars and Blade Runner. She'll do a splash page that should be really awesome and impressive, and its just like a bunch of stick figures with some quick color tones on there.

That shit don't fly when James Stokoe is putting out Orc Stain on the same week, lady.

Wasn't there some debate over whether the account was real when these badass stories started coming out? I just want to definitively make sure that Steranko bitch slapped that bitch-ass Bob Kane.

At the very beginning, yeah. But it's been long since confirmed that it's really him.

How is Annihilation?

Never read it, but I hear it's great.

I'm mainly an omnibus & hardcover reader/collector. And I'm still catching up on Marvel. So when the Annihilation omnibus was announced, it was a no-brained for me. I hope the sequels get omnibus treatment, too

I had no idea what to expect with Cyclops #1. After reading, I am fucking excited for this book. LOVE the father and son dynamic already established in this first issue and love that it takes place in Space. Easily on board and book of the month candidate.

Orc Stain is also 10 issues behind Saga despite starting 2 years earlier. Those noodly backgrounds you want take a lot of time. I love Stokoe, but a serial like Saga needs issues to come out more than once a year.

I feel like by the end of the month at this rate you will have like 10 contenders. Your enthusiasm is pretty infectious, I'll give you that.

Teen Titans Annual #3: We'll, the one good thing I can say is that Lobdell basically undoes everything he shit up in this series. So, yay for that?

I've basically spent the last week finding out how much of a fucking prick Bob Kane was. It's amazing, have you heard the Clown Painting story?

Bob Kane doing clown paintings should just be called self-portraits.

And the story is fucking hilarious--dude was a fucking villain.

Hybrid, Salem Seven, The Light Master, The Knights of Wundagore, Morlocks, Eternals? New Warriors is touching all my nerd g spots.

Woah, what? Why do people hate Bob Kane?
(Apart from him being what seems to be a pretentious ass.)

He Stan Lee'd Bill Finger in the worst way.

New to comics, so I have no idea what that means.
oqozpAI.jpg

In a nutshell: the Batman you know would not exist today without Bill Finger's considerable contributions to the character, but for decades Bob Kane took and received sole credit for his creation, and to this day DC credits only Kane as Batman's creator ("we're all good").

Huh, then what about Stan Lee? He didn't do anything? o.o
Stan Lee also had a habit of taking credit for creating characters that he had minimal input on, or were collaborative efforts, but not to the extent that Kane sidelined Finger.

I always loved that, it's just so great. That exchange alone makes Lying Cat amazing.

Can't sleep, Comic-GAF?

Try Amazing Spider-Man 1.1! Guaranteed to make you fall into a deep slumber in 12 pages or less.

Oh come on, it was fun. Sure it was mostly set up, but it was a great look at Peter has he walks toward being the Spidey we all missed.

The Cyclops solo book was great. That's just going to be super awesome, it's not the Cyclops solo I saw coming after AvX but it's the one I never knew I wanted.

Sarcasm- to a point. There's always been a contingent of people saying that Stan was less responsible for defining the Marvel characters we all know and love than guys like Jack Kirby (FF) or Ditko (Spider-Man). But Stan certainly deserves much more credit for crafting the Marvel universe compared to Kane gets for Batman.

Wow, just read some articles about Bob Kane and the whole Spider-Man debacle. Holy crap. I guess Kirby created most of the character, while Ditko made him who he is now.

The behind-the-scenes of comics are crazy. o.o
