I decided to browse my local B&N's graphic novels section in light of the sale.

Of course someone already took the one copy of Watchmen.
I'll probably order it from their website anyway.

Sarah Horrocks made some good posts reappraising Liefeld's X-Force work and it's one of the best attempts at that sort of thing -- totally convincing until I tried to read some of his stuff again

Joe the Barbarian read like of Morrison's failed movie pitches that he was lucky Sean Murphy drew. Would not buy.

Image Expo, where they reannounce books that still aint come out yet, like Brandom Graham's projects and Nameless by Morrison/Burnham

I'll probably pick up a copy of that myself. I enjoyed the movie but have never read the trade.

With all the hype for MCU phase 3 I got interested on reading comics for the first time ever (only read mangas so far) specifically Captain Marvel and I am currently reading the 2012 run.

gaf, I would love to hear your suggestions for marvel comics! :D

Behave yourselves.

No promises can be made.

I'm just going to chime in on the art thing.. I definitely have more respect/draw to an artist that can be technically sound, and execute what they're trying to show/say/express in a more refined way. Simple stuff that's just completely wrong really turn me off. A prime example of that for me, is faces and eyes. Specially with how fucking important they are. That's not to say I don't enjoy more abstract work cause I definitely do, it's just not always my go to.

To be fair that can also be from my art school experience. A lot of lazy students (and I'm not calling any of these working artists that) would do some half ass shit and call it abstract. If you tried to give them critique on composition/color use/concepts they'd just throw out "it's abstract those things don't matter." Those folks were totally wrong though, and those things still apply. I think that experience has turned me off to some abstract/modernist work.

I had a teacher in school that expressed the importance of the basics. The need to be good at realistically portraying something before abstracting it. If you can't get the proportions or the shapes right of a face realistically then you're not going to get it ride abstractly. It's why some one like Picasso could be so successful with cubism, and even go that route. The man mastered a realistic style before even thinking about abstracting thing.

For Carol specifically, I always recommend Ms. Marvel Vol 2 (2006-2010).

For Marvel in general:
Annihilation, Annihilation: Conquest, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy and Thanos Imperative.
Brubaker's Captain America
Fraction's Hawkguy
Marvel Now Deadpool
Hickman's Marvel Now Avengers/New Avengers and Infinity

Also, obligatory recommendation for Chris Yost's Scarlet Spider and New Warriors, unless you hate joy.

This is one of those times where we would forget to mention The Superior Foes of Spider-man, but I'm not going to let that happen.

Marvel Now Deadpool runs so hot and cold for me. I thought the first arc was crap, The good the bad and the ugly was FANTASTIC, the wedding stuff was crap, Deadpool vs Shield was decent, The Axis stuff has been good so far, Deadpool is actually funny in the first axis tie in and the art change has helped it.

That recent Bi-Annual with Brute Force by Paul Scheer was actually really funny.

All good choices, I would add:
Avengers Academy by Christos Gage
Avengers Arena & Avengers Undercover by Dennis Hopeless and Kev Walker
Young Avengers by Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie
X-Factor (2005-2013) by Peter David

That really wasn't an issue. I read through the whole thing, it just didn't grab me. I don't think there was any one thing that made me go "man, this book is a piece of shit."

Yeah, I felt the exact same way. There was nothing about it I disliked, but there wasn't anything about it I particularly liked. Except for the Sean Murphy art which was obviously incredible.

62.50 for Strangers in Paradise is great, do it! Katchoo is on my keychain with Harley and Lego Raphael. It's good.

Cool! Thanks for the opinion!

I really ought to read some Deadpool sometime. I've never read any.
Maybe I'll pick up the trade for The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly eventually.
It's great to have you back in ComicsGAF, by the way!

I don't know how I should reason Morrison Batman. I would buy it all if I did.

Buy it all.

Yeah, those pieces were good. I haven't read X-Force but i just couldn't get into Youngblood.

Matt Seneca also did a short passage on Liefeld, but it mostly just said that Liefeld's criticism as The Worst isn't really fair.

Panel layout's is an entirely different beast. And I'll grant you that some of the layouts have been interesting. But does this literally boil down to, "It's a unique flower?"

I may come off dickish in regards to shit like Quitely and Bertram. But it's honest to God something I seriously want to understand. Like, I get that art tastes are subjective. But when all time lists put Quitely near or at the top or Bertram's art is heralded as the second coming I just want to know. Not many artists raise my ire enough to post about it. Honestly, I think Quitely and Bertram are the only consistent ones. Typically I just sort of shrug and chalk it up to tastes.

But Goddamnit. I just don't get it and I want to.

In regards to it all just boiling down to uniqueness, not at all. I think uniqueness is good if there's talent to bolster it, but that aspect on its own is not necessarily a positive, and definitely isn't the reason I love Bertram's art. It's like how some people think that being clever makes a great comedian. Cleverness is fine, but you have to have raw fucking funny to be a comedian. Can't just get by on puns and drawing dumbass things on a big sheet of paper, Demetri Martin. Like I said, there's personality, there's fluidity, there's a brilliant understanding of framing scenes and consistent panel layouts that are functional, gorgeous, and just plain fucking awesome. Most important, though, I just genuinely love the amount of detail and the general feel to the art. The minor mannerisms of all the characters, with Damian's showmanship as a fucking child riding a motorcycle into a group of goons, old man Bruce shattering a cane to show his reluctance to succumb to age and refusal to retire, or El Gaucho just... well, being the Goddamn El Gaucho.

As for being dickish, not at all. Heated arguments are fine in my book. I'm always for passionate arguments, even if they get a bit combative. I don't think we should be scared to argue.

Screenshot_2014-06-20-18-27-35-1.png

Gaze upon El Gaucho and weep at his beauty. Bertram draws him absolutely dripping with machismo, just the way the Batman of Argentina should look. I majored in fine art for two years in college, so believe me, I get that everyone appreciates different things. But man, I dunno how you can look at that panel and not get stoked to read that comic. Those characters have so much personality.
Yeah, I just wanted to quote this post because it's fucking great.

My question is more about where I start vs best places to read. I've always been a little confused about the reading order.

1. Batman & Son
2. The Black Glove
3. Batman RIP
4. “RIP the Missing Chapter” from Time and the Batman
5. Batman and Robin: Vol. 1 - Batman Reborn
6. Batman #700 from Time and the Batman
7. Batman and Robin: Vol. 2 - Batman vs. Robin
8. The Return of Bruce Wayne
9. Batman and Robin: Vol. 3 - Batman and Robin Must Die!
10. Batman, Incorporated: Vol. 1
11. Batman, Incorporated: Vol. 1 - Demon Star
12. Batman, Incorporated: Vol. 2 - Gotham’s Most Wanted

This is the list I am working from. Batman & Son plus The Black Glove are in one deluxe trade now.

So I picked up Morrison's run and read it awhile ago, but I think I missed "Batman, Incorporated: Vol. 1 - Demon Star". There is a weird jump between Vol.1 and Vol.2 that I always felt was odd. That might explain the gap.

Don't forget to go vote ComicsGAF US...even though..you know.. I had to go down the line like this..

asshole, asshole probably going to prison for 3,000 outstanding traffic tickets, asshole, drunk asshole, guy who wants this town full of bars to have more bars open year round.

and then the two questions about denying bail in more court cases and giving more corporate tax funds to cleanup/open space projects in 2019.

IST updates Wednesday right?

Want to order the Kinski trade and that Sakai project hardcover that's on sale.

I really wanted to vote today, but I'm stuck in a state I'm not registered to vote in.

I believe they do, yes.

I think its getting a Absolute Edition soon.

Correct, now in January. It will include the debut of bunch of redrawn pages by Burnham, pages that originally had fill-in artists during some of the last Inc issues (IIRC, something like 20 pages total across issues 6-10 of Inc, the New 52 run).

Just finished the Manhattan Projects OHC. So good.

And regarding issue #10.
Hickman... How does he come up with this stuff. His ideas are so crazy and awesome and it's hard to think that anyone but him could think this stuff up.
I mean, a serial killer inside a serial killer's mind who's killing off the latter serial killer's multiple personalities to become the sole personality.
Brilliant.

I eagerly await the next OHC.

I was actually pretty happy with my voting options this election. Some pretty decent propositions and people on the ballot.

And IST updates on Tuesdays. Usually around 2-3pm PST.

I forgot to vote today, but I did make a big IST purchase... so I think that balances it out.

You've still got over 7 hours to vote. No excuses. :p

Ah yeah, I meant the fact that
he has killed one so far and intends to kill more. So, future serial killer, to be more accurate.

Now that you're done I can tell my story about that issue. When I met Ryan Browne (he drew issue 10 and draws all of those style issues going forward), one of the things we talked about was what it's working with Hickman on Manhattan Projects. I was curious how much of that came from each party. From what he told me, Hickman sent him just a basic outline of the plot and told him to go nuts. So the outline may have said "Oppenheimer is on a horse at the beginning" and then it was Browne who decided to have it come back to life with no head and then get a robot head. He also had free reign to come up with all the other Oppenheimers that populate the background.

In later issues Pitarra starts using the likenesses of friends and other industry types as cannon fodder. It's fun to try and figure which comics personality is getting horrifically murdered in each issue.

I can't wait til you guys get to issue 20, it's probably my favorite single issue so far.
