Feels good, actually.

I'll try to post more about comics. I've been doing rapid reviews on another board, I should star cross-posting them here. They tend to be fairly random though. I get my books weekly but I prefer to let them pile up. Some stuff I read as it comes out, like The Multiversity and Spider-Verse which I'm hugely excited about as I love multiverse stuff. Otherwise, I read a lot of series in chunks.

Here's the most recent lot of Rapid Reviews:
Ghostbusters Volume 5: The New Ghostbusters (collects Ghostbusters [2013] #1-4)
“How on Earth did the Ghostbusters manage to catch anything without wrecking half the city?”
“Oh sweetie….they didn’t.”

One by one, the Ghostbusters team are spirited away to a different dimension. Three months later, with no sign of their return, it falls to Janine, Kylie (the Extreme Ghostbusters character recast as Ray’s assistant), FBI agent Melanie Ortiz (definitely not a Latino Agent Scully, no way) and ex-con Ron Alexander (an old foe of the Ghostbusters who duplicated the teams proton packs in an earlier volume) to chase after the classic team, keep New York ghost-free and somehow keep Walter Peck from destroying the whole business.

Erik Burnham has been writing the Ghostbusters since IDW’s Infestation crossover in 2011 and he has a good grasp of both the characters and their world. Its backed with Dan Schoening’s wildly energetic cartooning. Over-exaggerated facial features and hairstyles that threaten to go full anime are the order of the day here, but it helps to get across the cast’s personalities. It goes a long way towards fleshing out the New Ghostbusters in particular, whose dialogue feels a little flat despite being filled to the brim with quips. It lifts near the end as the antagonists are revealed and the groundwork is laid for 2014’s 30th Anniversary story “Mass Hysteria”.

This series treats only the two movies and the 2009 video game as canon, but other elements worm their way in throughout the story. They’re not distracting, and there’s no way I spotted them all anyway.

As a bonus, there’s an extra story set in the Real Ghostbusters timeline, examining what happens to a ghost after they’re locked in the Containment Unit. At only two pages per issue, it needs to get through its’ story quick, but its entertaining and fun to revisit that world.

IDW’s stable of licensed titles comes in for its’ share of flack, but I think it’s fair to say that they treat their properties with respect while adding their own details along the way. “The New Ghostbusters” sets up a raft of possibilities for the Boys in Grey and I’m looking forward to digging into the rest of the series.

Predator vs. Judge Dredd vs. Aliens (collects Predator vs. Judge Dredd #1-3 and Judge Dredd vs. Aliens: Incubus #1-4)

2000 AD and Dark Horse team up to bring you this collection of The Galaxy’s Greatest Lawman vs. two of cinema’s greatest monsters. The collection opens up with the Predator mini, in which the hunter stalks the streets of Mega City One, hunting the Judges for sport. As casualties mount up, Dredd is forced to turn to Psi-Judge Schaefer, a descendant of Arnie’s character from the original Predator. John Wagner is great as usual when it comes to his most famous creation, but the art by Enrique Alcatena has much the same problem as the IDW Dredd, it feels too clean for the setting even allowing for the Predator’s signature kills. Still, it’s worth it for the glorious stupidity of the final fight, involving mechas, psychic blood imprints and Dredd stripping down (but still not taking the helmet off) to have a good wrestle/knife fight with the Predator.

Incubus has a similar nod to past continuity in its’ ranks, as a young Judge named Sanchez plays a vital role. There’s less attempt to explain the history of the Aliens than the Predators, but there’s less of a need to do so. They arrive, they kill people, they go on to kill more. The art is much better here though the writing is laboured in places, possibly due to the addition of Andy Diggle to help with the heavy lifting. There’s some seriously clunky dialogue here, coming as close to anime-style calling of attacks during the battles with the Alien.

Both stories are good fun, though they don’t deal with the heavier themes of better-known Dredd arcs. As crossovers go, the novelty of the ideas carries the stories through some pacing problems and uneven dialogue.

New Excalibur: Defenders of the Realm (collects New Excalibur [2005] #1-7)
New Excalibur: The Last Days of Camelot (collects New Excalibur [2005] #8-15)

With Captain Britain joining the Illuminati in New Avengers, and a British Spider-Man and the Captain Britain Corps being a part of Spider-Verse, it feels like a good time to look through the adventures of the good Captain. Rather than being a full reunion of the Claremont/Davis team, this book sees Brian Braddock and Pete Wisdom joined by Sage, Dazzler, Juggernaut and Exiles favourite Nocturne. In this run of adventures, they face a team of X-Men with a dark secret, an attack from Albion and the other Captain Britain of 616 Lionheart and journey to Camelot to prevent Arthur and Merlin’s early death.

This is from around the time that Chris Claremont was slowly losing his grip (partially due to health issues) and while it’s not as bad as his Exiles run, it’s not nearly as good as the book’s 90s peak. The book suffers in collected format, like many modern Marvel books, by being unable to keep a regular artist so the image of the book is all over the place. The collection of characters just doesn’t gel, there’s no feeling of a team dynamic like the great team books. At this stage, I’m just hanging on to get to Captain Britain & MI-13, which I’ve heard nothing but good things about.

Future reviews may include:
Pathfinder: Dark Water Rising, Of Tooth and Claw, City of Secrets
Nikolai Dante: Too Cool to Kill
The original Suicide Squad series
And whatever else takes my fancy

I'm super excited to see your write up of the original Suicide Squad. Ostrander did some amazing stuff in that series, and I rarely see anyone here talk about it (other than ViewtifulJC's aforementioned usual suspects). There were a few issues that were tough to leave off my desert island list.

What I would personally recommend:

Excalibur #1-25, this is written by Claremont and mostly illustrated by Alan Davis. Its like a goofier, lighter version of the X-Men book he was doing, where he can use his cute characters Nightcrawler and Kitty Pryde(who didn't currently fit in with the darker, harder Silvestri X-men at the time) and his love of Marvel UK. Sadly, Claremont left after #25, leaving a lot of his sub-plots and plot threads hanging. Luckily, after many subpar issues by a bunch of different creators, Alan Davis came back to write and draw the book as of #42, and superbly handles all the storylines Claremont left hanging, like the Nightcrawler-Brian-Meggan love triangle, or the relationship between Kitty and Widget, and the Multiverse War, etc.

You could probably just stop reading there, cuz its a pretty happy, definitive ending, but if you still want more, Warren Ellis' run isn't too bad. You will have to put up with some 90s Pacheco artwork and Ellis basically writing himself into the book with Pete Wisdom so he can fuck Kitty Pryde.

The Claremont/Davis stuff should be available digitally, and I know you can buy them in trades. The Alan Davis stuff especially had a Visionaries line just for him, I believe.
Cool. I'll add that too.

Also on a side note a secretly awesome warren Ellis run was when he took over gen x late in the series. Did anyone else read this? It was a time when marvel just gave him all the fringe xmen books like x-man, gen x, etc to him to do whatever. It was great but didn't last long and the book was canned. Edit: ah it was really an Ellis/Brian wood collab. #63-70. It's on MU and was good...going by memory

I'm only up to #10 but I am really enjoying it so far. The cover of #10 is straight up amazing, one of my new favourites:

What started as background reading material (I'm Game Mastering a similar premise for a tabletop RPG superhero/villain game I'm running soon) is turning out to be very entertaining.

Oh you don't have to suggest it; its a fact. As a person who has written many large posts(if do say so myself), I'm pretty much writing it for the non-girly avatar girly statue crowd that might actually read it(Kipp, fyre, tim, Birdie, and filthy slug, mainly)

I bought that Beasts of Burden book because of you. I already have all the Daredevil things. I love things but I could never explain it in a way to get someone to try it likes some of you do.

Same here! And on write ups That's my problem too. My summaries boil down to...this be really good. Well that and I mostly view and type from an ipad and to do real write ups, that is NOT the device to use.

I thought, from what I read, that Pete Wisdom was a John Constantine expy. That sounds even worse. Poor Kitty.

I find the whole gaggle of chain-smoking, snarky badasses Ellis does like Spider Jerserlum and Jenny Sparks are author inserts, with Wisdom as one of the heads of the pack. He can definitely be read as a Constantine expy, but IDK, I always thought that was Kipling from Doom Patrol cuz Mark Waid(editor at the time) veto'd them using ol' John.

I bought Batman King Tuts Tomb from his greatest Rogue Gallery story list. Good Riddler story but IMO, not the best.

a good rule:

1. Did Claremont write it?
2. Did Alan Davis draw it?
3. Was Warren Ellis involved?

If the answer is no to all 3, skip it

i will never get the dickriding claremont gets. hes done good shit, but not enough that id put him on some sort of pedestal.

Real talk here, those first 25 issues of Excalibur rank right up there with his classic X-Men stuff as some of my favorite Claremont work. My copy of the Excalibur #1 special issue that launched the series is still one of my most prized comic possesions. That series cemented Rachel as my favorite Summers family member for a loooong time.

Man what the heck Warren-Ellis-like characters are the absolute best. When others get to write them and take the piss out of the guy.

If you can't enjoy a good fake Warren Ellis YOU'RE PROBABLY BROKEN INSIDE.

As long as we're talking about Chris Claremont, can anyone comment on his current run of Nightcrawler? The first trade comes out this month, and while I'm not much of an X-Men kind of guy, Nightcrawler seems like an interesting enough character.

Just finished the Ms. Marvel Vol. 1 and can really see where the love for this book from all of you is coming from. Its a really great book and I hope it will have a long run. Her supportinh cast is very great and it really feels like a modern version of the old Spider-Man stories, where Peter has to deal with balancing the hero stuff and his social life/school.
The art is great, too. Its little bit more cartoony than the usual superhero stuff and still not to different.

I am really looking forward to the next trade.

So I know this may not have been your intention, but this post reeks a little of sexism. Not to mention it's a little offensive.

What does "girly avatar girly statue crowd" even mean? Are you (and others) singling people out that have female characters as avatars? Because I would honestly say I find all of our avatars in here very tasteful, male and female included.

I know this might come as a shock to some of you
hahaha yeah...no
but I actually am a woman. A woman who loves to support strong, female characters. Should I and others be judged for having a woman in our avatars? Does it make our opinion less valid that we like mainstream things?

I'm not really understanding why we're being called out for this. Why does it matter that we like statues? I certainly don't call anyone out for picking up less books than me a week. Or for not having weekly or monthly IST orders. I'm not really sure why it matters.

I feel like there may be a bit of resentment in this thread when mainstream comics do better than independant titles.

It's funny that so many of you are stomping and spitting on Harley Quinn for winning, because the book sits in the top ten best selling comics of the month pretty consistently.

I think there's a reason this thread has grown so much over the past few years. Movie verse has definitely had a huge impact, as has the fact that many publishers are now being riskier and releasing a broader range of titles.

Also, for the record, someone from this so called "girly avatar girly statue crowd", reads and enjoys your posts very much. In fact, it even made me go out and buy one of the books you suggested:

Just finished listening to the Decompressed episode where they discuss the Marvel Method vs working Full Script. Very interesting, I had no idea about the different working styles. Gillen is also very good at editing his podcasts and cutting out any fluff and banter (that usually puts me off productions like Giant Bomb quicklooks).

One of my favorites is when Bendis straight up writes him into Powers for a single issue early in the run. I think after the first arc? Fun stuff from pre marvel Bendis

I just re-read that yesterday. That issue is good fun.

I also hope any lttp discussion from us tpb readers (or talking about new acquisitions) is not too unwelcome.

It's fine and welcome. Post about what you want to talk about.

All I read is omnibi/hardcovers/TPBs and I post in here, usually with a picture(s) of what I'm reading. Current? Hell naw. I finished Crisis on Infinite Earths TPB a few weeks ago, and have been reading Uncanny Xmen omnibus ever since.

What was your take on CoIE? I read it a couple years ago and liked it more than I thought I would. Many don't remember it fondly but it was still fun for me to read.

It's absolutely welcome! I don't think any kind of discussion involving anything to do with this medium should be frowned upon.

Hell, one of my favorite things is when people bring up LTTP convos about older stories. It gives me a chance to reminisce about a story arc I may have loved. Not to mention, many time I find myself re-reading something because someone is talking about it again.

That first run of Excalibur was good. A lot of the X-books in the 80's and early 90's were pretty good back then. Then it all seemed to turn to shit. The only book that I thought was consistently good throughout the 90's was the solo Wolverine title, but I suppose that depends on your opinion of that character.

I don't post enough to make a big difference in how the thread runs or anything, but I do appreciate the legitimate comic reviews and discussions. I have no interest in the statues or the Harley Quinn posts. If people like that stuff that's OK, but I personally don't want to read about it.

Maybe comics could all stay in one thread, but figurines and stuff like that could have it's own place.

What do you guys think of Marvel Unlimited? I think it seems like a good deal, but I'm not sure how I feel about it being digital. Anyone here use it and have any thoughts on it?

I think it is a great deal, but I hadn't read too many Marvel comics before I subscribed. I signed up for 1 month first to read the Annihilation events + GOTG. Extended my subscription for a year after that. The app is shite, but I can deal with that.

Figurines already have their own thread. Sometimes they cross paths with comic gaf and by jeebus, I don't mind seeing them here.. it changes things up a tinge.

It's not like anyone is posting animu figures in here. Comic-related stuff is fine because it's relevant. If we start disallowing this and that because of everyone's specific tastes, we'll end up with 40 different threads.

I enjoyed it. I thought the story still holds up.

But I can see why DC thought they needed to do the event. Having those "infinite" earths is really confusing for someone like me.

Something thing that was funny to me was how CoIE introduced Krona, when I had recently read the JLA/Avengers 4-part series where he is the main villain. I thought he was just some made up villain solely for the JLA/Avengers series. Had no clue he was so important to the DCU

Oh no doubt it was...dense material. Even for me who I think i have a decent understanding of fringe DC stuff even though i started reading in the 90s. It was fun seeing Perez just go nuts and cram as much stuff in every page. He's not my favorite artist but his trademark splash pages are fun viewing

thats a mistake. well rise up and take all of you clowns out.
Gambits power to kill a book is impressive. Look what he did to poor X factor. Peter David can keep any book going no matter the sales but even he can't fight gambit.

i actually really like gambit. His power set is a lot of fun and I love when he uses his staff

Nooooo!

We should just make a separate thread for Gambit. I've long felt all his fans need to be quarantined off.

In theory I've liked Gambit since back in the old cartoon. I definitely still like the use of powerset and the accent at least, and his costume is kind of fun if you can deal with the more questionable parts. But yeah, I feel like any time I've tried to look deeper he tends to come up short. Isn't his backstory kind of a mess? It's been a while since I looked into that but I kind of recall it being way more convoluted than I was expecting, but this is jumbled memories from reading Wikipedia or something years back so I could of course be way off.

Also, this has been a solid page of comics discussion. Way to step up our game, guys.

And sorry for totally blowing it by not adding some comics discussion of my own here.
I only managed to read one issue of Manhattan Projects today even though I intended to read a ton.

Although, actually, I lied. I guess I do have a bit to discuss.
I'm really liking the emerging themes of
duality and people not being who they appear to be
in Manhattan Projects. I love how the
Roosevelt AI says something offhand about how there are three people who aren't who they appear to be. Obviously two are Einstein and Oppenheimer, but the third one has yet to be revealed.
Hickman is just doing a lot of really awesome stuff in Manhattan Projects. I've been thoroughly entertained so far.

Edit:
Oh, and when you figure out at the end of the first issue that every time Oppenheimer says "Hmmmm" he's listening to one of his many multiple personalities (which presumably came from the souls of the people he cannibalized; brilliant).
