Comics: Supreme Power

For awhile now I toyed with the idea of buying the Supreme Power trades. I had no idea what they were about, but the covers looked interesting. I decided to wait after reading a hardcover would be released, and last week I picked it up. Honestly, I'm blown away at how good this book is. Spoilers abound.....

Keep in mind I had no idea on the original Squandron Supreme, so beginning reading this I was like "WTF...this is a SuperMan ripoff". The story seemed a little slow, but it held my interest. Around issue #9, when Hyperion begins his revolt, the series really took off imo.

All the characters are interesting to me. Hyperion is like a darker Superman, sort of alien to the nature of man, deeply conflicted, but trying to find his way, the only thing is his mistakes cost everyone around him dearly.

Nighthawk is a really interesting take on the Batman character, one that seems more hate filled, almost an anti hero. I really like the direction of this character, and the mean, gritty, and sad nature he has. Very fitting for a Bats type character.

Zarda is a freaky take on wonder woman, I love her evil Godess attitude and Monica Belluci looks. Ledger is getting more and more interesting to me as the issues go by. Perhaps my favorite character is the fish girl, who hasn't been given a name yet. She doesn't have any lines, but when she looks at Ledger...the artwork is so good. You can see in her face a look of child like love, curiosity, and adult lonliness. I'd like to see her in more books, because her character provokes the most emotion out of me, even though she has had no real dialogue so far.

So, after I finished the hardcover (Which is cool btw, has artists sketches of what they wanted the characters to look like and the original uniforms, as well as an old Squadron supreme issue), I went and bought the remaining back issues. I could only snag 14 and 15, 13 still eludes me. Anyhow, #14 may be the best issue of Supreme Power I've read and one of the better comics in recent times. The fight Hyperion had was epic and felt as such, the level of brutality and horror was off the charts...but the best part was the ending, the interaction between The Blur, Nighthawk, Ledger, and Hyperion. Especially Nighthawk finally being owned hard by the Blur. On a side note, I have to admit I laughed allot at what Nighthawk was saying at Blur's powers...I've always thought the same regarding those type of characters, but The Blur showed Nighthawk they were not to be lauged at there.

Going to go read issue 15 now. Just wanted to sing my praise for Supreme Power.

I've got a funny Supreme Power story... (I *LOVE* this series, BTW)

I was up in Berkeley with my friend Tyler, and we were in the local comic shop on Wednesday. He found Supreme Power issue 1 and was asking me if he should get it. it was $10, and I found the trade for him that was about $13. I told him that the series fucking rocks, and he should just drop the $3 extra to get the trade. He decided to just get the single issue and we went back to his appartment.

....Twenty minutes later we were back in the comic shop buying the first trade. :D

I can't wait for the next issue. Also, there's a character they have sketches of in the hardcover and in the back of the issue 1 he got, that isn't in the series at all yet. (I can't remember his name.) Even though they're just now bringing in the fish chick, I can't wait to see what they do with whatever that last guy is.
