Liking your protagonists is the most important part in those story-heavy cinematic games. In gameplay focused games it's not that important. I played Indiana Jones and the game has quite some flaws. No problem, because i really love Indiana Jones. I never ever would have played the game if they would have replaced him with somthing like that. And i probably wouldn't have finished it if that was the sidekick.

If Sony would add a sexy woman + a bog-standard dude >90% would choose one of those instead of that thing. By some people's logic those would all be incels, mysogyn, virgins, scum or whatever, but i don't think so.

I think for the devs it might be that it’s just boring to use “sexy” people all the time, it might check some boxes for some people but it just isn’t very interesting from a creative standpoint. Imperfect characters are going to be more relatable in a way, because average people are flawed as well. I guess I’d rather play through a story about someone flawed overcoming some complicated shit instead of some unrelatable “sexy” person saving the day once again.

Neither Mario nor Astrobot are Naughty Dog style action adventure games that rely heavily on cutscenes, narrative, characterisation and storytelling.

Make games closer to movies, expect the same standards and expectations around your characters to be applied.
