The problem is they're going to the extreme, again. It's like a contest to make the character as unattractive as possible and lacking any sort of feminine features. I remember playing Returnal and I didn't have a problem that I wasn't play a hottie, but everyone has their tolerance level and when you exceed it I'm not going to play it no matter how good the gameplay is. Maybe that would be passable in a first person game, but not when you see your character the entire time.

Female characters don't need to be hot. But they either need to look normal or have a normal personality.

I think Faith from Mirrors Edge is a great example, Elena from Uncharted as well, Nilin from Remember Me.

For some reason that's against the rules of making games these days.

Do people do the same for mario or astro bot?
I think for me it's about the removal of catharsis and its most basic level.

Mario and Astro ARE a big part of their respective games. They are not conventionally unattractive. They are not attempting by their very appearance to subvert our expectations.

What you have to understand is that this appearance is not something that happened by accident. With Druckmann this is very intentional. By pointing it out I am simply saying "I saw your message and I don't like it."

Someone on the other side of the coin might say, "I saw your message and I love it." That is 100% allowed. I would not get mad at someone who said that and would be happy they bought the game. However, I expect no one to get upset that I may not buy it. What you are saying though, is neither. You are saying "what message?"

Mario was never good looking. He's a fat cartoony guy with a moustache for over 40 years. Kind of resembles Ron Jeremy. Astrobot is a robot. I dont think anyone cares about the sexual attraction in a robot character for a platformer game.

The key difference is multifold:

- Female characters being dumbed down in western games. Uglified on purpose even though the real actress doing the face and mocap can be good looking. Historically, female characters skew to good looking, but big budget games are dumbing them down

- Male characters still look just as hunky as always, as to their real life actor too

- In western games past bunch of years, there's often a DEI/Woke message attached to it. And supported by DEI loving weird employees on social media

In media, characters dont have to be good looking all the time. Typically for grounded dramas, you get normal looking people. You arent going to get Margot Robbie and Chris Hemsworth in Kramer vs Kramer 2. You get regular looking people like Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep because watching a story is more important than gazing at hot models hoping they both show their chests.

But in fictitious fantasy stuff that's where people are watching movies or playing games involving dragons, space travel, and crazy shit. So to go with that craziness is good looking characters. Why purposely make bad looking characters? For fantasy, you want to feel part of the action. Heck, gaming you are playing the part. So people want to be good looking too.

I agree. Psychologically, people like visual patterns, so when something unexpected is presented instead of what they’re used to, they’re put off by it. I think changing shit up is exciting and wish more people would just let themselves roll with it instead of acting like cro-magnons about it.

You honestly think that this character design in 2024 is changing shit up and is exciting?

I think you'll find the whole damned problem is how much it's not doing that.

I don’t think it’s necessarily original or unique, but clearly a lot of people wish she was “hotter”. I’d actually be put off the game if she looked like the run of the mill female protagonist with perfect hair and proportions, etc. It’s more interesting.

What would changing shit up be like to you? Give her Down syndrome? You’re basically saying you’d rather she look more conventionally attractive. I just don’t think it really matters that much, it’s a fuckin’ third person perspective game.

So, you don't think it's changing shit up then? Why even say it?

Feels to me like you're one of many people who want to bring this whole conversation to purely one about her looks, rather than engaging with the broader and more relevant fact that her entire character design is very, very tired.

Nothing is totally original or unique, but her design is deviating from typical female leads in games that have a full head of hair.

How is her design “very, very tired”? I can’t think of any other games that have the same character design, at least not in AAA games. Do you have examples?

Are you saying you don't think the girl boss routine is overplayed at this point? Forget her bald head. Look at the character they are presenting us with: confident, strong, independent, calls the shots, masculine traits, brave, risk taking, cocky, cool... I could go on.

Seriously trying to tell me that's not overplayed in 2024?

I can definitely understand not liking her attitude, but I was just talking about her looks/design.

To me, she just comes off like she’s been through boot camp and has maybe seen some shit, which I think is the point. I can see why some people are tired of that dynamic but if I game it out in my head I can’t really think of a way I’d prefer the character to be (bubbly and annoying? No thanks)

I think we’re supposed to find out why she is the way she is through playing through the story of the game. I’m sure it’ll make sense with that context, but I can understand why people might be put off by her smugness in the trailer.

I’m hoping it doesn’t go full Forspoken levels of annoying quips every 10 seconds, but otherwise she doesn’t bother me cuz I don’t really know her story yet.

Jordan's look fits the world better than a fem'd one would. Just like Ripley, Sarah Connor, and Furiosa.
Ripley had hair and was feminine in alien 1 and aliens 2. Sarah Conner was also feminine in terminator. She was more manly in 2 but still considered sexy when it came out. It was a product of its time.

Strong female role doesn’t require this cliche bald weirdo look. How many strong women do you know that look like this vs mentally unstable ones? It’s schlock, it’s cliche.

Even just focusing on the skinhead looks, for the vast majority of people out there, they know zero shaved head women unless it's a cancer patient, or maybe there's a bunch in the military or prisons(?), but not walking around every day normal life. Even the majority of women's MMA fighters dont even shave their heads. They just cornrow it or pull it back so it doesn't get in their face. I do remember some though watching fights. But not too many.

The lack of imagination with some of you guys is wild. “If I don’t see it very often in real life then I don’t wanna see it in my video games!”

It is supposed to be a more grounded sci-fi game with incredible graphical detail, Porsche, Adidas and Pet Shop Boys CDs. So a more common look would fit in. And a skinhead female is not common.

That's a chicken-and-egg situation.

Maybe you don't see it in real life because people generally dislike it.

Go ask a bunch of random men what their least favorite hairstyle on a woman is. We all know what the answers are going to be.

So if Neil could just step forward and explain who his target audience is and how he plans to recoup the cost, that would be great.

Who knows.

Maybe all of us who like good looking sexy women with long hair missed the latest fashion trend.

That new wave trend combining skinheadery with a ghetto look while wearing a wife beater.

Different strokes for different folks.

There was a movie in the 90s with Demi Moore called GI Jane - she had a shaved head and a wife beater, etc. Ironically it was also directed by Ridley Scott.

This isn’t really a “new” thing, it’s just a creative choice. It would actually be pretty lame if Naughty Dog (or any studio) felt like they were expected to fall in line with what “most guys want” in a female character. Who knows, maybe at some point in the actual game she might grow her hair out and you’ll buy it?

And that movie got bad reviews, Demi Moore looked awful and the movie only made $48M on a $50M budget. And that was when Demi Moore was at the height of her career in the 90s. Nobody wants to see Demi Moore in the army looking like a skinhead.

Striptease came out a year earlier and made $110M on a similar $50M budget.

Fucking hell...video games were a lot easier to enjoy when it was just a simple case of trying to better your high score or making your way through a maze full of dots.

Yes, I'm a grumpy old fart but since when have we had to start writing dissertation's on what used to be such a fun, simple hobby?

This industry has vanished up it's own arsehole.

I’m just saying, some people are into that look, that’s all.

I’ve just looked a picture and Tati Gabrielle has a very feminine frame, well proportioned slender arms and shoulders, nice stomach, small perky breasts but not pancakes - I mean they’ve stuck her face on a man’s body.
if they put her with her real body, you would complain that a woman who weighs 50kg can't even fight with a house cat...she has an athletic body (not excessive) like thousands of women who go to the gym, which fits perfectly with the character.

Fair enough.

But a lot of gamers just want decent looking characters. Nobody is expecting Margot Robbie flashing cooter like wolf of Wall Street battling aliens. Just some respectably decent looking characters to play. Especially weird since many of these western games the actresses hired are better looking in real life. But purposely dumbed down. But funny how the male actors still look just as good in the game.

Also, gamers are skeptical because the look and attitude of the character is a red light warning it might be politically preachy. And ND’s last game already had its full of lesbians and trans characters and bigot sandwiches.

You arent going to get politics from hot characters.

I don't want to use that character.
How can I get involved in a heavy story based game if I don't like the character?
I play plenty of games where I don’t particular care for the main character but am interested in the potential story or plot, so I go along with it and end up appreciating the whole thing later in the process. It’s possible.

Kratos in GOW? Don’t care for him, but the overall game was fun. Leon in RE4? Don’t really care for him either but the game was fun. Lara Croft? Not that interesting but the games are fun for what they are. Maybe this game will be the same way. YOU’RE not always the main character in a game, sometimes you’re actually just taking the main character THROUGH the game to unfold a story.

Maybe “hot” characters are too dumb to have interesting political sense lol

That is your right.
If I don't care for the character I won't care for the story.
That's my right.

What if the game is good? You’re not gonna play it cuz she doesn’t look the way you want her to?
Liking your protagonists is the most important part in those story-heavy cinematic games. In gameplay focused games it's not that important. I played Indiana Jones and the game has quite some flaws. No problem, because i really love Indiana Jones. I never ever would have played the game if they would have replaced him with somthing like that. And i probably wouldn't have finished it if that was the sidekick.

If Sony would add a sexy woman + a bog-standard dude >90% would choose one of those instead of that thing. By some people's logic those would all be incels, mysogyn, virgins, scum or whatever, but i don't think so.

You want attractive characters in games for the same exact reasons you want them in movies because that is what sells. It's a lot easier for a person to sit still for multiple hours staring at people on a screen when the people they're staring at are pleasant to look at. "Easy on the eyes" is the phrase.

Stellar Blade.
