Cooling the next-gen

CELL seems to be air cooled, which is a good thing. God knows about XeCPU.

But what about the GPUs? Those things in PCs need massive heat sinks and giant wind turbines to get the heat out of them. And the next-gen consoles will have even bigger, badder ones.

Anyone know if the nextgen GPUs will run cooler, or any plans for funky cooling methods? Xbox 1 is already too loud in my lounge, I hope next gen won't be louder.
 
Both Dreamcast and PS2 had heat pipes in their first iterations, with water as the heat carrier. PS2s was a bit more advanced though; it was larger, used a special efficient shape and new materials and used a specially developed heat transfer paste at the transfer surface.

We know that Cell has special thermal control on die, developed by Toshiba.
It consists of microscopic thermometers placed at strategic points on the processor, constantly measuring heat flow, so it is possible to move processing to colder SPEs or going down to a lower clockspeed.
The first PS3 will probably employ at least a heat pipe, although more costly tech like active water-cooling, peltier elements and veined heatpipe, is likely to be used.

i find it funny because I don´t beleive Sony with put ANY expensive components in the Ps3..

Just like like Ps1 and Ps2, it will be made up of crap parts that break like glass

PS3 will have it's own refrigeration system as currently seen various Maytag and GE home equipment.

Yes i do. Being one of the informed PC dudes who has used peltiers, radiators + water cooling and phase change cooling systems..... this is a fucking joke for a home console.

As for "active water cooled macs" ... there has been some really interesting stuff going on, but i am not aware that its been anything more than an r+d thing.

Dont take it personally, i wasnt laughing at you. Dont you think its a tad extreme for a little console ? The die shrinks should be equaling less heat, not more.
 
I imagine the Cell and the GPU will be cooled by something cheap and effective. I figure it'll be a aluminum finned heatsink with copper heatpipes. They might be as big as their PC counterparts and weigh 400-500g? each. I figure passive cooling will be impossible given the amount of heat they will dissipate. All copper heatsinks would be ruled out due to cost. Peltiers are too expensive and require plenty of power to run. They also want to keep the system as quiet as possible but as small as possible so 80mm fans would be as large as they'll go, although 92mm or 120mm fans spinning at lower rpms would be more effective at reducing noise. We haven't even considered the power supply. 300watts min? This will also be actively cooled by a fan. I think the system is going to be relatively large and it wouldn't surprise me if it's bigger than the XBOX 360.

Edit: Big NO to water cooling. Way too expensive and can you imagine the leaks? ;)

Good cooling will ensure that the technology stays fresh longer.
Upping the Mhz and spending a bit more on cooling in the first couple of versions of the console, might very well be cheaper in the long run than going with the largest possible die.
And water cooling needn't be that much more expensive than conventional cooling solutions. I could imagine a stamped out metal form welded shut with fluid and a small simple piezo or magnetic pump inside. And peltier being expensive? Maybe for the PC fanatics who are willing to, and therefore does, pay almost anything to have the fastest PC. A peltier element made in large numbers and in an efficient manufacturing process, won't be very costly. It is after all only two separate pieces of conducting metal and some semiconductor sandwiched in-between.
