Man, that first EX Chapter was messed up. And I had to stay up late to finish it, too. More disturbing than anything in the first three chapters of the game.
After playing through the first two games earlier this month, I gave up on this one. Two hard crashes within an hour of each other forcing hard resets of my Vita is too many. Really disappointing.

The first extra chapter in Blood Drive is legitimately brilliant, I think. And I give mad props to my coworker Nick for fine-tuning Morishige's soliloquy into something that sounds legitimately Shakespearean -- he's become our go-to guy for poetry in the office, since he's so damned good at it.

No, I have the physical. There's plenty of other reports of crashes as well. I'm not going to bother any further with it. I'm not out anything because it was Gamefly, just wished I could conclude the story. Oh well!
I just got a game over because the game switched which character I was controlling after a cutscene and a ghost appeared right next me. Fucking bullshit.
Just updated the OP to include both the Launch Trailer (which I like quite a bit more compared to the localization announcement trailer) and links to the assorted reviews that have been published thus far. Will continue to fine-tune it as circumstances dictate.
Who the FUCK designed this game? Was it the entire original CP staff? I want to throw into the death room any individuals who felt it was step up in gameplay to center so much around the fucking ghost chases.
I've finished the main story last night, and I still have two EX chapters to go through. I think I'll go get the last few wrong ends I'm missing before finally finishing this game. I have some mixed feelings on it, which I'll post below:
Good:
-Despite not liking every part of the story, I did think that it provided a satisfying conclusion to the original Corpse Party storyline. (Spoilers)
Ayumi's character went through a pretty great arc, actually. I really liked that.
-The game has some really freaky moments in it! (Major Spoilers)
I seriously jumped so much when the game cut to that CG of Sachi possessing Yuka!
-I loved the way that the environment (major spoilers)
Got totally covered by the fleshy "nirvana" by the end of the game. Really gross stuff, but it made Heavenly Host seem interesting again.
-The voice acting is well done, as expected.
-The localization is great! Some of those gory descriptions really made me squirm.
-There's a handful of wrong ends in the game that are absolutely on par with the first PSP game.
Bad:
-The game runs terribly. The frame rate is poor most of the time, and the game actually crashed on my Vita once near the end of the last chapter.
-The game is annoying to actually play. Having lots of annoying obstacles on the ground isn't exciting or scary, it just makes the game a slog to play through. Having so many ghosts that chase you around is also pretty annoying.
-Some of the EX chapters were REALLY short! Why even bother having them if they're not going to be lengthy?
-Audio quality on some of the dialogue is very poor.
-Load times are too frequent. It's a bit silly that I get a loading screen just for opening the pause menu.
-I was not fond of some of the new characters, who seemed a bit ridiculous even by Corpse Party standards. Especially Magari, who (spoilers)
Walks around in a ridiculous outfit in broad daylight while carrying an actual scythe, which she even attacks you with. I could accept it if she only was like that inside Heavenly Host, but it seems to be a bit odd that she didn't get stopped by the police or something. Then again, maybe she did and we just didn't see it. It's just... a bit too silly, you know?
Also wasn't a big fan of Kuon. (spoilers)
Was her having a crush on Satoshi really necessary?
-I really didn't like how the story devolved into (major spoilers)
saving the world. I preferred it when Corpse Party was... less epic, and more intimate, I guess.
Overall I did still enjoy the game, in spite of its faults. I'm looking forward to a totally new set of characters whenever the rest of Corpse Party 2 is finished!
The post-credits scene with Ayumi cradling the Book of Shadows in a semi-vegetative state while Yoshiki arrives at her doorstep has a followup cutscene that takes place 5 years later featuring both characters during the opening of Corpse Party 2: Dead Patient.

Yeah, I figure I'll just watch it on youtube, probably would be faster even. I wanna play it, but I just can't get myself to for some reason. Everytime I say I will, I always put it off.

Well if that's the case, then I may aswell go ahead and do it today since I've got the time. Pretty excited to start up BD soon even with the negative stuff I've heard.

No, they were sent back to the real world, but just had all memories of their lives up to this point erased -- their friends forgot them, basically. And they forgot each other, but still managed to find one another in the end, as per the post-credits scene in Blood Drive.

Only problem with that is, if you don't complete chapters 1 through 7, you won't unlock chapter 8 -- which is the most important one to play through for Blood Drive! And if you didn't load save-data from the original Corpse Party at the start of the game, you not only have to complete chapters 1 through 7, you also have to get every single wrong end in all of them.
It's totally worth it, though, Book of Shadows is an excellent game, when you give it a chance to prove itself. You may not have been pulled in by it right away, but if you keep at it, you will be soon enough.
I actually liked Book of Shadows more than Blood Drive. If you can get used to the gameplay in BoS, there's some really frightening stories to experience! I really liked the episodic approach in it.

Well, I was suggesting that he'd watch it on Youtube if he wasn't playing it in any case, and in that case, he could skip those chapters. Book of Shadows was my favorite CP game, slightly above the first one, but there will be people that won't bother with the change in gameplay, so I can't judge them.
Does anyone else find the, um, sexual tension surrounding Naho Saenoki odd? She gets some characterization across the series and her own romantic feelings for Kibiki led to the subsequent tragedies in Heavenly Host. But nothing to suggest she is bisexual.
Yet everybody else has the weirdest girl wood for her. Sayaka clearly has some kind of romantic feelings toward her. Something readily apparent in her jealousy at any kind of playful intimacy directed at Naho from Aiko or even Mizuki. And she outright hates Inugami's advances. Ex: The extra chapter in Blood Drive.
Aiko and Mizuki seem to regard her as a professional rival or potential enemy but both harbor strong enough feelings that pursuing Naho is a primary driver for their entering the Nirvana. Aiko even professes wanting to hear her voice just one more time. Mizuki seemed to just want to take down a strong rival, but again, the feelings they obsess on Naho, someone they should clearly understand is long dead, and the absolute disregard to safety and common sense Aiko shows in entering the Nirvana is telling. She admits the book of shadows collection was just a pretext.
Shoujo-Ai or Yuri anime tropes seem to be a major subtext in the Corpse Party series, especially unrequited love.
Naomi and Seiko.
Azusa and Ran
Naho and whatever love triangle is going on there with Sayaka and co.
The game dresses up a lot of actions to be based on friendship and such. But the lengths some characters go seem motivated by a stronger emotion than that.
I'm still chugging through Blood Drive but I had to take note of this theme that seems prevalent with a lot of the female characters.
I'm not sure who between Naho and Satoshi holds more sway with the ladies.
Ayumi had a strong fixation on both of them at one time or another so she's probably the best person to ask.
Seiko clearly and definitely loved Naomi more then a friend, whether Naomi thought the same back is still questionable. But man do I wish Seiko could've lived she would've been a way better partner for Naomi then Satoshi ever would be, Satoshi is like useless throughout the series only except to somehow how that "harem" power. He doesn't end up gaining more power, Yoshiki is both more important and brave then Satoshi. Its like they kinda added him to be the trope hero but then just accidentally kept him alive for the next few games because of Yuka? or whatever girl likes him's feelings.
When Kuon ends up admitting her feelings for Satoshi in this game I thought he would have some special spiritual power he doesn't know about or something, but nope just "harem" power. That crap disappointed me heavily.
Not saying I hate Satoshi he's definitely better then many in his role, but man he just feels off in this game.

Yes, indeed Satoshi does have his share of admirers. I do find the sexualization of Yuka and Satsuki troubling in the game along with the kind of brother complex Yuka has towards him.
But, honestly, a lot of Satoshi's stuff just reads as anime hijinks. The female relationships seem to be far more impactful to character development and plot. The female love aspects of the story repeat enough to be a theme.
What this says about Corpse Party's narrative I'm not sure.

They creators could create a horror game with only women and go full out, I would play it . Only relationship in the game felt good that wasn't only women was Ayumi/Yoshiki even if it was one sided basically the whole time.
Its recommend that even if you don't play the games (which can't be helped if you can't get to it) read it somewhere because alot of the points in Blood Drive lose their umph or point if you don't know the previous story.
The plot will make no sense. The game starts off mid-scene from the cliffhanger the second game ended on.
There's really no reason to jump into this one if you haven't played the other 2. Not sure why you wouldn't either since they're arguably stronger than Blood Drive.
Yeah, don't skip Book of Shadows, it's the better game and sets up a number of things for this one.
So minor plot nitpic:
Seeing as most of the cast died in Heavenly Host when it collapsed, shouldn't they have been fated to die there even after time was wound back? like what happened in the early chapters of Book of Shadows?
Anyway, finished the story, although I'll probably go back and do some of the ex chapters. I'll have to agree that
it was a bit disappointing. The plot was enjoyable enough, although it felt very different to the other games a lot of the time. Still some creepy moments, but I never really felt like the cast was in any actual danger, aside from a couple of characters who were introduced covered in death flags (Haruyuki and Satsuki). The biggest surprise for me was that Aiko actually lived in the end. It would have been interesting if the second act actually stayed in the real world a bit longer though, as it was it felt like a bit of a waste when it got retconned pretty quickly. A few things seemed to be introduced then never mentioned again pretty quickly too, like the black shadows being people in the real world.
The main problem though is that it's just not enjoyable to play. The constant hazards add nothing bar forcing you to kill the framerate by keeping the torch on, the chase sequences are just tedious, the very limited sprint makes backtracking annoying, especially when it involves that spiral staircase, and the constant loading even when simply opening the menus, just all add up to a tedious experience. Fortunately the game never crashed on me though. I really hope that the reworking will mean that Dead Patient won't have these issues when it eventually comes out
