I dunno this doesn't make a ton of sense to me.
Experts say a cotton bandanna was the least effective.
But Scientists from the Missouri University of Science and Technology say a 600 thread count pillowcase folded four times could filter out around 60% of germs.
So how much would infections drop if people are wearing masks like these? If everybody is wearing cotton bandannas is it still just as effective, or do they have to be legit masks?
The study also seems to be using its assumption of effectiveness based on the state of coronavirus in countries with mask wearing cultures, like korea and Japan. But this ignores the fact that other respiratory illnesses, like influenza, have no trouble spreading in these countries. There are other factors that could be at play here. For example perhaps the coronavirus was in countries like the US or Italy much earlier than thought, which is why it was able to reach the level of spread it had before actions were implemented. Maybe korea's early and extensive response was what helped keep the situation under control.
The study also says that mass mask wearing was only effective if implemented by day 50 of the outbreak, which I think many places are past by now.
