Crowd running to play The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild at E3

Googling about I'm seeing stuff saying that the demo was an hour to an hour and a half long, although that's preshow reports of how much time Nintendo were asking attendees to put aside for the demo. Here.

Taking the shortest of that estimate (1 hour), the turnover if every person played the demo fully comes to 140 people per hour. According to the E3 website the opening hours were 12-6 on Tues (6 hours), 10-6 on Wed (8 hours) and 10-5 on Thu (7 hours). That works out at 2,940 play sessions over the 3 days. With ~50k people attending the actual show, that's enough time for a little over 5% of attendees to play.

I think that was a separate in-depth press demo, that wasn't the same as the one on the show floor as I understand it. We had a hint of the limits on the show floor demo in the Treehouse when they forgot to turn off the time limit and had the demo end after... was it fifteen minutes or so?

Be excited. I am. I'm also over 30 years old and honestly can't imagine running for something like a video game, especially in public

I've seen the sprint for Space Mountain when Disneyland opens. I've read the bit of the Unofficial Guide - a book pitched at adults - that details the best place to stand before the barriers drop to shave a good few metres off the distance to travel. I can absolutely imagine it.

so who wants to bet Zelda wii u is released a month after the nx version, kind of like what happened with twilight. theres no way Nintendo isn't going to use Zelda as the big system seller for nx.

I was wondering about that myself, if it happens then I guess I might not buy the game or just buy it used. I was waiting for TP for GC and the people who bought a Wii played it and finished it while we were waiting for the game for a while.

Hasn't Aonuma confirmed that both versions release simultaneosly? I think i read something in one of the Zelda threads .... just don't remember which one.

Thats embarrassing lol

These guys are adults literally racing each other to play a game

Way to defeat gamer stereotypes guys. And this isnt even a public event

We are talking media "professionals"

This just in: people are not allowed to be excited and must act like business man at all times.

People may say that Zelda isn't historically a system seller, but whether or not you agree with that the fact remains that Skyrim, Witcher and their ilk have popularized the open world quester to a level well beyond what was standard in the OOT days. I think this new found popularity for the genre plus the respect for the Zelda franchise (and the physics contributing to social media sharing) will combine to make this one of the highest selling games in the franchise, even if the sales are slanted heavily towards the NX version. Totally getting Mario 64 vibes with this one. That crowd rush is amazing.
The Mario 64 comparison is apt. This really does feel like such a leap forward for Nintendo.

I dont see any reason for a crowd of people to race to anything

Are doorbuster events looked at so lovingly as well?

Think of it this way. They are media professionals who probably want/need content for their business. The faster they get in the Zelda line the less time they have to waste to play one of the top games at the convention and they get more time to play other games to produce more content and presumably make more money. This is from a passionless stand point.

after playing the game

So they are running to buy WiiU's?
But honestly, what kind of message do you want to deliver with this gif?

Ugh

Makes sense but disgusts me

Thanks for the different perspective i didnt consider

Yeah it's pretty incredible. I would have never guessed that they would actually have a good E3 presence with one game. Like, it's absolutely mind boggling.

It's Nintendo, man! We love to hate them, but they're genius. Beyond all other developers.

k I'll say right now that that Pokemon thing they showed before Zelda is probably the most boring thing I've ever seen at E3. Just excruciating. It was like the polar opposite of Zelda lol.

Lets just say that it would not hurt GameFreak to give their young devs a shot at the main franchise like Nintendo did for this Zelda (and Splatoon). If Pokemon can use something, it is a fresh new persepctive.

Two things. The majority of gaming media people (especially since e3 has opened to bloggers and influencers) are not professional. They're hobbyists.

Also this Zelda line was filling fast, and word of mouth over the first two days showed that this was the game the public was most interested in, that you needed to get coverage of, and within minutes of the gate opening would have a 4-5 hour line.

Decent side note about E3 and being a press show that's only supposed to be for media professionals. This year's show had a Persona 5 booth that had a massive line people waited in to get a hat. You didn't get to play or see the game at all. People waited hours In this line for a hat. That tells you everything you need to know about how much this show has changed and what kind of attendees they let in now.

It's rare the main buzz from an E3 comes from a single game. Memories of Super Mario 64 and the Wii unveiling. With Zelda, Splatoon and Super Mario Maker, the new Nintendo is headed in a very good direction. The word of mouth for those 3 games is really good.
New IPs, re-thinking of their traditional franchises, the "a new kind of Mario" comment from Miyamoto, really curious about the future. Iwata was the kind of man to learn from previous mistakes.

Pokemon Go? That's where the experimentation is for the series.

The mainline can stay traditional.

I was there the last day and got in line for zelda, near the back and they closed the line in the 2 minutes it took to get there. I stood there for maybe 15 minutes then just thought this is fucking dumb, and left. I did get to meet the voice of Mario real quick as he came to the back of the line and signed some autographs.

Anywho, i was walking next the nintendo booth like 3 hours later and the group that i was standing next to was still maybe 1 section away from getting just the fucking ticket to see the game. I made the right choice.

Freaking Nintendo. When they are at their lowest they always make a comeback in the most amazing way blowing everyones mind. That's precisely what they did with Zelda: BoTW. The game's hype started with the right foot and it literally reminds me of the epic Twilight Princess reveal back in 2004 and we all know how that ended. With excellent news and it helped to push Wii's launch to the moon and beyond. If Nintendo manages to deliver with the NX, I can totally see the NX being a massive success. So exciting!

Getting there 40 seconds earlier can shave off like 2 hours of waiting in line

They do.

For example, the director of Sun & Moon is Shigeru Ohmori, and it's second time directing the game, having worked on game design and map design previously.

Check facts before making such statements.

Also, Pokémon is very experimental in its spin-offs. Look at Pokémon GO, Detective Pikachu, Pokémon Art Academy etc.
