Neat.

I'm hoping for da Vinci to build a suit of armour with wings and go Full Batman.

I thought they were already pushing the Batman angle pretty heavily: Little boy discovers a cave with bats in it --> something happens there that changes him forever --> grows up to be an awesome playboy that invents cool gadgets. I wouldn't be surprised if he donned, like, a winged cape thing later on.

Think so? Honestly, the only bit that felt out of place to me was the scene where the old dude gets out of the pool/bath naked and then has the kid's throat slashed. That was a little WTF, like something out of The Borgias. I thought the other scenes felt perfectly in line with the rest of the stuff, though, tonally speaking.
It might be a byproduct of watching so much antihero television these days, but it feels a little flimsy and instead of firming up the characters to add depth they threw in some sex & violence instead. Might just take some getting used to on my part - there's nothing inherently wrong with a more lightweight show with some adult content tossed in.

Holy shit, guys. I didn't know Johnathan Hickman and Matt Fraction were also writing episodes for this show.

“

Hey, all, nerd-gasm here. One of the best parts of this job is that you occasionally get to call up people you admire out of the blue and ask them if they want to play in your sandbox. Sometimes, they say “yes”. So…

I managed to convince Starz and the powers that be to hire Matt and Jonathan on to write two episodes of Season 2 with our trusty staff.

In case you don’t know who Hickman and Fraction are — they are comic gods in the indie and Marvel world.

Jonathan kicked holy crap out of Fantastic Four for a number of years and is currently writing The Avengers. He’s also done some incredible indie books through Image like Pax Romana and The Manhattan Project.

Fraction inherited the two FF books from Hickman and also writes the Eisner-nominated book Hawkeye, which pretty much redefined the super-hero genre. He also created the quirky indie book Casanova.

I also tried to get Thomas Pynchon, but he said “no”.
”

the incredibly kind, amongst other things, David S. Goyer on me + jhix’s new gig

(also if you liked ep 1 last week? ep 2 this week is going to sheer the top of your fucking head off)

New episode tonight!

The Serpent

Leonardo continues his quest for the Book of Leaves. The Pope’s nephew arrives and meets his spy. Leonardo’s war designs fail, causing a rift with the Medicis. The Pope learns of Leonardo’s prowess.

Watched episode 1 & 2 and decided I'm going to stick with this.

Ep.1 was ok. Fun, fast, and a frisson of nudity and violence.

Ep.2. It's still fun and fast, but episode 2 gave us a real dark edginess which I found excellent. I'm hooked.

Hm. I thought episode 2 was rather dull. It wasn't terrible or anything, just dull. I'm not sure why it didn't click with me. I think I enjoyed last week's episode more.

Also, random factoid: tonight's episode was co written by Scott Gimple, The Walking Dead's new showrunner.

That was an alright episode. I did love Leo's moment at the end with the cannons. I called that coming fairly early on, but it was awesome nonetheless. Riario or whatever is quite a good villain.

I have to say, the opening credits are superb. Lovely visuals and music.

I'm actually sold by episode 2. It's an adventure tv show, and the final scene reminded me of Indiana Jones. I like his Sherlock Holmes assessing the situation with sketch graphics, but I hope he goes further with slow-mo (lol) during fights.

So the consensus is this is worth the time? After 4 years I sadly lost Spartacus, but Starz has my attention with their ability to make good show so I was eyeing this one, I just haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

Pretty much this. It feels like an adult version of a "The Adventures of Da Vinci" style cartoon you'd see on Saturday mornings in the 90's. I'm okay with that unless it gets bad.

New episode tonight!

The Prisoner

Riario discusses his defeat with the Pope and a mysterious prisoner. An outbreak of demonic possession at a convent is blamed on the Medici’s, but Leonardo searches for a rational explanation.

Watched Ep 2 this weekend - thought it was better than the premiere. Glad to hear Ep 3 might be an improvement, too. Guess I'll dig into that later this week.

I don't think I could possibly disagree more.

I dunno, man. There's just something about Lorenzo's wife. I knew I'd seen her somewhere before, but I couldn't place her... but she played Irene Adler on Sherlock last season!

But hey, Lorenzo's mistress is a damn fine looking woman, don't get me wrong. Everybody wins.

But I think Lara's more my style.

Third episode was fun. Thought they laid it on a little thick with the insanity at the convent but I'm enjoying the double-dealing and backstabbing that are going on all over the place. Nice tease with the mysterious prisoner, too.

Another pretty fun episode tonight. The show is slowly growing on me. I look forward to seeing how they address Leo's sexuality next week.
