What's going to kill this movie is the soundtrack.

DDL can handle his own with Spielberg's directing so that should work out.

But the soundtrack? Will make or break this movie. It's like, the core to making DDL even better.

:lol

How about the script, the acting, Spielberg turning it into Oscar bait, etc. There are far more important things than the script here

Has Daniel Day-Lewis ever been in a good movie? I really like him, but despite being a so-so actor, I think he deserves to star in an actual good film for once.

Dude, The Aviator was arguably the best film of 2004.

Yeah I forgot to mention that one too. But really, he's doing far too many now. Roosevelt AND Sinatra on his plate? Both with Leo is a big stretch too.

You realize you're not going to get a tag out of this, right?

Good thing Lincoln is from the 19th century.

Taken?
Really?
He did nothing there.
I can see someone says it's because Schindler's List.
I don't agree with that as I think he was quite bad in that film, but at least there was some meat in that script, at least there's something to discuss.
But Taken?
He just shouted and punched people.
erm, Taken made him popular in GAF because he was badass in that movie. not for his acting abilities. I think he was great in Schindler's List, DDL is however, one of the best actors alive so I'm not sure why people are even complaining.

just got this press release: Sally Field Joins Daniel Day-Lewis In Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln'

ACADEMY AWARD WINNER SALLY FIELD TO STAR AS MARY TODD LINCOLN FOR DREAMWORKS STUDIOS

Los Angeles, CA (April 13, 2011) – Two-time Academy Award winner Sally Field will star as Mary Todd Lincoln, wife to the 16th President of the United States, in DreamWorks Studios’ “Lincoln” to be directed by Steven Spielberg. The announcement was made today by Spielberg and Stacey Snider, Co-Chairman and CEO of DreamWorks Studios.

Sally Field joins Daniel Day-Lewis, who has been cast to play Abraham Lincoln in the Spielberg film.

“I’m excited to be working with Sally for the first time,” said Steven Spielberg. “I’ve admired her films and she has always been my first choice to portray all the fragility and complexity that was Mary Todd Lincoln.”

“To have the opportunity to work with Steven Spielberg and Daniel Day-Lewis and to play one of the most complicated and colorful women in American history is simply as good as it gets,” said Sally Field.

Based on the best-selling book, Team of Rivals, by Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Doris Kearns Goodwin, the screenplay has been written by the Pulitzer Prize winner, Tony Award winner, and Academy Award nominated writer Tony Kushner. It will be produced by Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg.

It is anticipated that the film will focus on the political collision of Lincoln and the powerful men of his cabinet on the road to abolition and the end of the Civil War.

Sally Field is a two-time Academy Award winner as Best Actress in a Leading Role for her roles in “Places in the Heart” and “”Norma Rae.” Field won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama or Comedy Special for her role in “Sybil.” She won her second Emmy for her guest starring role on the long-running drama, “E.R.” Her other film credits include “Steel Magnolias,” “Mrs. Doubtfire,” and “Forrest Gump.” Field currently stars in the ABC series “Brothers & Sisters” for which she won an Emmy in 2007.

Doris Kearns Goodwin won her Pulitzer Prize for No Ordinary Time, the story of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and the home front in World War II. Kushner’s prize was for his play Angels in America, which later became an Emmy Award-winning television special. He had previously worked with Spielberg on Munich for which he was nominated for an Oscar in the Adapted Screenplay category.

Filming is expected to begin in the fall of 2011 for release in the fourth quarter of 2012 through Disney’s Touchstone distribution label.

About DreamWorks Studios

DreamWorks Studios is a motion picture company formed in 2009 and led by Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider in partnership with The Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group. Upcoming releases include “Cowboys & Aliens,” “The Help,” “Fright Night,” “Real Steel,” and “War Horse.”

We should make a time travel movie where DDL has to go back in time, like an Austin Powers fish outta water type deal.

Ah, so we're just battling with rumors from both sides :lol In all honesty, it looks like Scorsese's next will be the Sinatra biopic w/ Leo.
Luckily, Sinatra apparently once had a goatee for 15 minutes, so Leo can continue to have totally inappropriate facial hair for his roles.

My favorite Liam Neeson role is my dad, from Fallout 3.

Daniel Day-Lewis, obviously, is a phenomenal actor. I've never seen him not way into a role and have it work flawlessly.

I just watched In The Name Of The Father again for the first time in a while.

DDL is amazing in the film. Just so raw and passionate. It's rare you see a performance where an actor just lays it all out there.

Pete Postlethwaite was excellent as well. The scenes between them were heart-breaking.

Color me excited when DDL is down to play this role, specifically the MGS2 iteration:

Yo dawg I heard you like playing roles so we cast you as a character playing a role playing a role playing a role so you can act while you act while you act.

Joke post?

Wow, I guess not.
Really?
Do people now consider Neeson a great actor?
Neeson is a great actor but I don't understand why he should have been Lincoln beyond the look which I think Lewis will transform into just fine.

ho-lee sheeet.

Tommy Lee Jones, Joseph Gordon-Levitt Join Steven Spielberg's 'Lincoln'
(and many, many more)

lincoln.jpg

Steven Spielberg is rounding out the large cast of his Abraham Lincoln biopic, DreamWorks' Lincoln.

Tommy Lee Jones and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, along with Hal Holbrook, James Spader, John Hawkes, Tim Blake Nelson, Bruce McGill and Joseph Cross are in negotiations to join the pic.

David Costabile, Byron Jennings, Dakin Matthews, Boris McGiver, Gloria Reuben, Jeremy Strong and David Warshofsky are also in negotiations to board the movie.

Lincoln, which sees Daniel Day-Lewis as the 16th president of the United States and Sally Field as his wife, Mary Todd, is based on Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin and adapted by Tony Kushner.

Jones will play Thaddeus Stevens, a Republican leader and congressman from Pennsylvania. Stevens was a staunch supporter of abolishing slavery and was critical to writing the legislation that funded the American Civil War.

Gordon-Levitt will take on the role of Robert Todd Lincoln, eldest son of President Lincoln and the only one to live past his teenage years.

The other actors will make up the supporting roles in this telling of Lincoln's journey to abolish slavery and end the Civil War.

The project, which will shoot this fall in Virginia, is eyeing a late 2012 release via Disney's Touchstone label.

Jones will be seen in July release Captain America: First Avenger, while Gordon-Levitt will shoot The Dark Knight Rises this summer. Both are repped by CAA.

Jesus fucking Christ, Spielberg is going to destroy with the cast alone. Cannot wait for this to get off the ground. Still disappointed Liam Neeson couldn't stay attached.

DDL was great in that film but I think Postlethwaite stole the show. rip

I seriously cannot wait to see DDL in this. I think he will pull off one of the best performance of the decade, just like he did in There Will Be Blood.

I thought for a moment that JGL was gonna play Boothe, but figured that's a really awful part to play and he wouldn't spoil his good name.

This poster pulses with an appeal so broad the typical restraints of our societies fall by the wayside.
Wow at that update.

Oh shit its slated for late 2012?

That will be 3 Spielberg films in the span of two years. :D

He's also going to be ramping up on Robopocalypse next year.

Let's each post random character actor photos of the dozen-plus actors that were just announced until we've posted them all. I'll go first:

Bruce McGill baby.

Next?

In Gangs of New York, DDL as Bill ''the butcher'' threw a dagger at a portrait of Abe Lincoln.

It's funny that DDL and Liam Neeson were both enemies in Gangs of New York.

DDL was originally slated to play Ra's al Ghul in Batman Begins instead of Liam Neeson.

Liam Neeson was originally supposed to play Abe Lincoln.

Ooh, they're filming this in Richmond, VA in the Fall. I'll definitely have to check this out, always wanted to see a movie being filmed.

Very intriguing casting.

Didn't think either stole the show, personally. It was a very sort of mutual performance. They played off each other beautifully.

It'll be really funny if this and Django Unchained are going head-to-head for Oscars.

Thinking more about it, this year is probably going to be a more epic oscar battle anyway.

We have the potential to see Spielberg, Scorsese, Malick and Fincher go head to head.

With stuff like Toy Story and District 9 and whatever being nominated these days (with 10 in the category). Tin Tin is a lock for nomination as I'm pretty sure it will be great. Oh and I don't know about Hugo Cabret. Could go either way.

But who knows if they're ready to give a directing nod to a mo-cap/cartoon movie. Even if it is Spielberg.

Gonna be a crazy award year though, far better than last Oscars.

I was actually talking about War Horse. But what are you talking about? Avatar was a frontrunner based on the same techniques.

Isn't Tin Tin out this December? Oh wtf both films out this year! Not excited for War Horse at all but I'm there because it's Spielberg.

I have to say again though War Horse has a really really cheesy synopsis. I don't know how they're gonna make this work. Great cast though. I hear Loki from Thor is pretty good actor.

Fincher's, Scorsese's, and one of Spielberg's (Tintin) 2011 are all kind of like B movies for those particular directors. Not sure if any will be serious award contenders.

Scullibundo said:

And that film consisted of live action actors as well. Tin Tin will be completely cg. But like you said War Horse is out so he'll probably get nominated for that anyways.

I have confidence that DDL will be awesome I'm just not confident in Stephen Spielberg nowadays.

Hard to get excited for a Spielberg movie since they seem to be so hit and miss for the last several years. Some potentially great movies ruined by his schmaltz.
