Dark Souls 2 E3 Gameplay Demo Footage

I don't know about the skepticism, this looks pretty snappy and smooth to me. The attacks seem a bit more "arcade" than the weighty swings of the original DS and Demon's Souls weapons but it could just be the equipment they're using or the frame rate being higher. It is hard to tell from a 360p video, after all.

As for enemies and environment - shit looks horrifying, not really sure what people want. DS never had a "rawr" look to the enemies either, they were always a bit more understated in their scariness. Looks plenty threatening to me.

The rolls look faster imo but the stamina usage for all weapons and rolls have gone up dramatically. it's not something you can miss if you regularlly play this game. A good thing imo.

Looks great and the animations look completely fine. When he switches to the slower weapons (halberd, greatsword, axe) everything looks fine. The only thing it seems to be lacking currently is some level of hit stun from larger weapons...I'm assuming that will hopefully make it in. And as far as movement speed goes it's nothing that's not achievable with high endurance or Havel's ring.

Really not wanting to keep my 360/Ps3 hooked up once the new consoles hit in November. How do we like our chances for Ps4/Xbone version down the line?

It seems the invincibility frames during contextual attacks like back stabs disappeared.

In other words, back stabs, parries and so on can be interrupted/punished in mid action.

Probably the GOTY edition, that took a full year to be released along side the dlc. I say you should still keep one console handy to play it.

Yeah they also said you can now whiff your backstab.

Hmmm. I wonder how it will feel different from DaS though. From the video it's hard to tell (really feels like I'm watching someone play the original). I really wish they would have delayed this until fall of 2014 to let it stew a bit more. It's the kind of game I'm okay waiting several years for.

lol duel wielding new lol that interviewer knows nothing

Well it is new in the sense of not just left hand/right hand that adds nothing.

Anyways made some gifs of the important parts.

Looks like soul spear.

New spell!

It's dark soul with more fluid animations, nothing negative about it, but they really should change that awful walking animation

29 months for a sequel is pretty long. it's the DLC that released a whole year later that made the wait bearable ( it might not seem that way to PC first time buyers seeing as they had everything bundled into one package in 2012.)

No, the animations seem to be a bit of a downgrade in terms of character and realism. They do look faster, but the dynamic animations may have been sacrificed for simplicity. We don't know if these are the final animations, but I have to say they don't look as good as Dark Souls' animations.

The strafing animation sometimes look like your character is hovering over the ground.

EDIT: Here's some examples of what I mean by dynamic animations:

Even the heavy attacks in Dark Souls 2 footage didn't seem to have this much polish, but I chock that up to the that the game isn't finished yet.

I think it looks much smoother and more fluid (combat and movement wise). I think it looks great. And I'm an old-school Demon's Souls player.

Same here. I really hope they plan to port this to the PS4/XB1 soon. As far as animations go, the walk animation does seem a little janky. It's like his torso is way too stiff while moving. The dual wielding cloaked character looked so badass though. It looks like they improved rolling some too.

Fix the god-awful lock-on FFS and let's finally elevate this franchise from intsa-kill masochism to an actual skill-based challenge.

The animations looks a bit floaty, but I'm not so concerned about that with so much development time left. I'm more concerned with the challange, the atmosphere and the lore and story of the game. I want really cool areas, something as memorable at Latria or Sen's.

I'll start being more woried about the animation when they show a more final build in the winter.

Simplistic basic attacks vs a jumping zwei, a falchion Forward + R1 and a gold tracer one of the most stylistic weapons isn't really fair but whatever floats your boat. I do think it's good to be worried though, we all want this game to turn out great.

The animation does look less weighty, but if the tradeoff is more responsiveness then I'm okay with that.

Oh, and I really appreciate the cloth physics.

Unfortunately, those are the only gifs I could find! I think that even the basic attacks don't have the same level of polish, but I have to assume that its because this is an early version or prototype of the game. It looks like they have redone the animations from scratch and are in the middle of finishing them.

This could only go wrong if From is forced to push it out the gate before its ready or they get lazy.

Don't get me wrong, everything else looks fantastic. Especially the capes! HYPE.

Looks awesome. I'm not seeing what you guys are all seeing.

The animation style is a bit different. Look back to the first gameplay reveal and the greatsword motions shown there. That's proof enough to me that they can make an even better game this time.

Well you picked some fairly unique examples. Of course Gold Tracer special animations look a lot more interesting than short sword R1 swinging, but the same is true in Dark Souls. I don't think we've seen anything yet as far as animations go.

Our friends over at Gamersyde have a bunch of new screenshots.

Really loving the cloth animation and lighting. This design lends a lot vagabond like feel to the character.

It seems like both the stamina bar and the amount of stamina dragin attacks do has just been multiplied. Wonder why.

Well stamina recovery speed has gone up so i think it's a fair trade. Makes your choices more strategic. Stamina drain for shield blocks are back up too! reminds me of Demon Sous. It was really terrible what they did to them in Dark Souls, they made them way to easy to rely on and hard to punish.

The walking animation looks fine with the light armor. Even in Dark Souls when you walk in medium armor it looks kind of weird.

Pyromancy is using a catalyst in the footage so you probably need to invest in int now.

they probably ditched the whole pyro-hand thingy, although I imagine you get different kind of spells from different kind of sages/covenants. I like that they added magic weapon as a magic sword-like spell instead of enchanting something, now you don't have to equip a catalyst in each hand anymore! :D

also, I'm not too worried with those videos, look at those ugly windows 95 popup message boxes when he picks up items - pretty sure they're gonna change a lot before release.

I remember early dark souls videos looked a bit off compared to the final product.

I'm hoping that Pyromancy doesn't require intelligence; part of the reason I enjoy Pyromancy is that it gives non-invested builds a way to use cool magic spells. Just make pyromancy less powerful (Since it requires less investment) or make it scale with your level instead of with your item modification (So that it can't be used for twinking newbies with +5 Ascended Black Flame) and I'd be good.

Just don't use lock-on when it'll mess you up. Problem fixed. :-P

I wonder what they're going to do about poise. It is kind of broken in Dark Souls. But on the other hand they need to have something like it in place because it was absolutely stupid in Demon's Souls how a dinky dredgling attack will stun a player in full knight gear.

Looks like Dark Souls to me, so I'm not sure why everyone is worried. Some here seem so intent that the series has sold out to the casual audience that they're going to believe it regardless of how the game actually plays.
Yeah every DS2 thread here is basically confirmation bias: the thread. It's a game that's 9 months away.

What do you mean by this? Your stamina drained when you blocked with a shield in Dark Souls as well. I must be misunderstanding you.

Not nearly to the same degree though. I think if your stability is over 70 there are very few things in the game that can break you. And then there are shields with over 80 which only Gwyn can break through.
