The debug menu is amazing. I just changed control over to an enemy hollow and killed my main character. LOL

Anyone know how I can get my controller to work with Dark Souls?

Should disable some HID ports as I have other controllers connected to my computer as well?

I had forgotten my least favourite part of Dark Souls 1 PVP: Invading the same gankers over and over again in the forest ;_; I'm not good enough to deal with it.

You'll want to unplug or disable other controllers, mainly dinput controllers. It's pretty annoying.

So, instead of transferring my Achievements I thought this was a perfect reason to replay and take all of them again. I was right, I'm just about to go to Anor Londo and I'm loving every second of the game.

Also planning a 100% route was more fun that I expected it to be.

My brother is super into the Souls' series, so I've watched him play quite a bit, but it always struck me as kinda janky, so for whatever reason I just avoided it. I won a raffle for DS here on GAF and tried it a bit with DSFix, but I figured the GFWL thing would be removed eventually, so I put it off again.

So I played the game for the first time really today, putting in a couple of hours. At first it was all "you died you died you died" which I didn't mind -it made me keen to play more cautiously. Then after a bit the combat began to click, and now I'm seeing why these games are such classics.

Just watching someone play doesn't really give a good impression at all. I really do feel a lot of tension entering a new section. Exploring out, getting further away from bonfires, trying to judge if you should down an estus or keep going, not knowing what's around the corner or what a new enemy will do. And those mist doors. Is it just a door, or is it a boss? Watching someone play it all seems quite leisurely, but when you're in it, you really do feel tension. A lot of it has to do with there not being any "scrub" enemies, almost anything can kill you if you're not ready for it.

The level design is very good too, the map seems so fantastical, and the routes all cross over and above and below each other, it doesn't seem that complicated at first blush but then you start seeing the connections and you being to really appreciate what the designers did.

Anyhow, this is a really tight game. Looking forward to spending more time with it.

Nice impressions, it is indeed very frightening on your first playthrough. Only people who played the Souls games understand how real the NOPE gif is.

I argued about doing the same thing, then I imported everything anyway... And now I'm regretting it because, for how silly it may sound, I feel a lot less motivation to play the game again, since all the old characters are still there and most of the achievements (the ones I bothered with, that don't require collecting items across multiple playthroughs) are already unlocked.

In other news, seems a bunch of server-side issues have been worked out. I hope the region-based online is one of them.

Hmm, mine is crashing when I unlock the fps. Why is that?

I'm on a GTX 780 and i5 processor.

Probably a stupid question since this is your first playthrough, but just in case, are you using the most recent version of DSfix? It's required to unlock the framerate in the Steamworks version.

Need a little help guys. I'm using DSFix and DSMousefix and it seems to be working okay but when I move the mouse the movement is really jerky. The FPS drops. And I forgot how to disable seeing the mouse cursor on the screen.

I unlocked the Framerate but locked it to 30FPS. If I lock it the FPS is even worse.

I just don't know how.

Okay I'll try removing the Bluetooth dongle when I get home in a few hours.

To disable other game controllers without unplugging them/if they're bluetooth Dinput controllers:

Go into Device Manager (to get to Device Manager just go to My Computer -> right click anywhere -> properties and it'll be on the left hand side)
Then under Human Interface Devices right click HID compliant game controller -> disable.

Might have to disable a few things to figure out which one it is causing the problem but it's easy enough to enable them again when you want to use them.

when i launch the game it says 'you are not signed in'

help?
Happened to me.

I was not opted into the steam beta.
I also did not have the gfwl saves on my PC

I needed to:
Quit the game
Uninstall both games for windows programs from my PC
Restart PC
Download the GFW Marketplace from Xbox.com
Enable compatibility mode with win 8 on the installer
Run the installer as an admin
Start up the marketplace (if this doesn't work then uninstall the GFW components again and restart the PC)
Rerun the GFWL version of the game
Sign into my GFWL account
Update the GFWL in game client
Force quit the GFWL processes from the task manager
Re run the game and download my profile data from GFWL (saves and achievements)
Verify that saves were detected by the game menus
Quit the game
Force stop GFWL processes again from the task manager
Right click the game from within steam, go to the properties and opt into the beta for the game
Download the beta
Start up the game
Watch as the achievements poured in
Verified that the steamworks version of the game also had my saves

That was it...

BTW, i needed to both A) enable Win8 compatibility and B) run the GFW installer as admin for it to work .. Basically when the installer is done the marketplace app should run on your PC. Some people need to set Win7 compatibility, I hear..even if they are running win8

I guess I fucked up - Steam imported my achievements, but not my save data. Ah well.

Anyone know if there's any improvement in performance? I have medium rig and it run like shit. I got this game Day 1 and probably the shittiest port I've ever seen.

Having a garbage console inspired software overlay that is now causing so much trouble was Microsoft's plan from the beginning to sell Xbox consoles by making it seem like there is an ease of use difference between PC and console gaming, when it is fact them who made it this way. Oh those sneaky bastards. *tinfoil hat, engaged* :p

What's all this about a debug menu and playable enemies?

Debug menu? Where?

From pushed out a debug .exe of Dark Souls with the Games for Windows patch on Monday. From then quickly pushed out another patch to overwrite the .exe so no one knew.

Unfortunately for them, people knew and some backed it up. There's downloads of it out there.

To access it you need a controller and then push select/back to get it to pop-up. PC keyboard/mouse is no-go. It's controller only.

Sounds like it's clicking with you in all the right ways, welcome to one of the best games of last gen in my opinion.

Remember this early optimism for when it fades... Darkness. Anger. Frustration. Ignore and persevere without a guide as much as possible.

Anyone having issues with the game launching? Yesterday it would give me a "missing executable" error on Steam so I verified it and saw that it downloaded the missing files. Despite all the files being there, it still won't launch.
