Dark Souls II - Graphics Comparison - PC Preview

Not to say this isn't bad but people realize it's usually some guys job to keep that stuff updated and not something they really pay too much attention about?

I know they should but they don't.

The Steampage shots were only removed because I asked Namco's PR guy on Stream which shots were from the PC version and he had to go check for himself and said "Yeah i been meaning to tell someone to update that." It's an afterthought to them.

I just hope the PC version does very well because i want continued support for these games on the platform. We got a the best version out of the box and if old lighting missing makes it sell less to the point where they stop caring about the PC market it would be a fucking shame because the next game won't be held back by old hardware.

Then what's with all the useless torches and sconces in the final release?

They are not completly useless, I used them more than enough in my playthrough, of course you can ignore them because they are not totally needed but using them at some points in the game helps a lot.

Not a tech wiz myself but i do know for a fact that basic support for the majority of resolutions and an uncapped framerate doesn't take much if any effort or resources, to not have it screams incompetence but it's From so not suprised if this doesn't have it.

Not a herculean technical task, but they'd have to quality test more hardware configurations if they were officially supported. See Resident Evil 4 on PC; Capcom said 1080p is the max, if you want to render higher, you're on your own. Metal Gear Rising was also similarly capped at 1080p. It's just so they don't have to officially support it. Maybe we'll be able to edit an ini file or something.

Hope there isn't any huge frame drops like there are in DaS, especially when fighting ceaseless discharge I'd have some big drops on i5-4670k/HD7950.

Ffffffffffffffffffff, Brad says no frame drops, buttery smooth on his home computer which isn't nearly good on Max settings. Nice Job From.

Agreed

I do like that this issue is being pushed though. I hope people find a better way to show that we really loved the look of the reveal footage.

Hopefully from aspires to that level of visual quality and detail in the future.....

Then what's with all the useless torches and sconces in the final release?

The only time I really saw where the changed seemed to cause a significant gameplay change was in that tunnel they originally showed off with the Turtle Guards. That's the only place with really conspicuous torches in what would be an otherwise pitch black room. Later on in the game there either aren't many unlit sconces or they actually do significantly affect the gameplay.

Edit: Quoted wrong post originally.

fair enough, but the lighting engine may or may not increased the baseline requirements. disabling it entirely via pc options might have been difficult to implement for whatever reason. i figure we can only safely assume so much.

The only thing I assume at this point is that From needs an intervention.
I know I certainly do from my disappointment.
I just went from waiting on the PC version to waiting on the Next/Current gen version lol.

Naw.

Pretty sure they are Vertical slice assets. Which were most definitely used for Marketing along with the TGS demo (Despite Screens coming out during TGS that were accurate to the ACTUAL game)

I guess the false advertising claims were certainly justified... or at least it was incompetent advertising

There was obviously massive amounts of miscommunication going on between the developers and community managers/PR at From and Namco.

Resident Evil was based on older code and i think the devs even admitted not being allowed to put resources into changing much of it except just getting it up and running in HD.

I also gave my opinion on Rising back when the issue came up, basically they're trying to sell you a product that does not in any way play to the strengths of the system and yet they expect people to shell out money for it, complete insanity imo.

This game's lead platform is PC, yet in no way is that visible from what we can tell, maybe i'm wrong and trust me when i say that i'd love be to, maybe it runs great without screwing up the game @ 120Hz and it does support resolutions above 1080p all the way up to 4K or even higher but as of now this is a terrible excuse for a port.

Edit:
Here they set a 1440p resolution, so no problem for downsampling guys.

Ray of hope perhaps?

As disappointed as I am about the downgrades, I am still happy I didn't spoil myself with the console version. 1080p/60fps makes a world of difference in Dark Souls and I just can't go back. Good that it's a solid port.

Yes, I understand that it's not something they prioritise but now that they are well known and are pretty much an AAA game developer I expect them to at least put some effort into it. I mean, console versions have been out for a month and PC is going to come out yet the screens are still there (on the official website as well. This isn't some fansite). I can sort of forgive them for it though.

Also, the number of people who like DS2 enough to ignore the downgrade vastly outnumber the people who care enough about it, and of the latter, most will give in to temptation so I don't reckon sales will take any substantial hit.

Has it been confirmed if the game support higher resolution than 1080p? I would love to play this at 1440p.

EDIT: Saw above post. Nvm.

Won't double dip until it's cheap on Steam then. It helps that the 360 version is really good in terms of performance and IQ. I don't mind tearing much.

Well, it looks like DS2 supports up to 1440p natively anyway http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/04/08/here-are-dark-souls-2s-pc-graphics-and-control-options/

I do hope they add cloud saves for the final version. Even DS1 had that. Could be the preview build wouldn't have it working?

I hope so too. Has there ever been a game that supports steam cloud saves but only lets you have one save file?

I think this also shows bad hitboxes.
Spoiler.

The sword clearly hit the player, look closer. Happens about mid stab, don't just focus on where the bosses stab ends. I'm pretty sure it is a "grab" attack meaning the game has to properly place the player in the right spot if they are hit by it, which is why he "teleports" to the blade. It just looks odd because the attack happens while the player is rolling and not standing still right in front of him.

Or that they are lazy fucks and don't want to impact console sales by releasing a decent pc version a month and a half from console release.

On a platform with no tech limits this is UNACCEPTABLE, and shame to whoever thinks this is k.

So much misleading information. I can expect this from EA or Ubisoft but FROM has greatly disappoint me with this move, especially when we showed how interested on the game we are after what happened with first game.

Yeah, suspected it would just be the console version with sharper textures and better resolution. Knew it wouldn't look like TGS trailer like some were suggesting. Of course once mods start rolling it could really change it up.

I'm honestly pretty happy with the 360 version so it maybe a while before I think about double dipping for the PC version.

Maybe someday they will revisit these assets in some rerelease/remaster/remake several years from now

I want to see what they could have made given the freedom.

Especially when you factor in a multi-national corporation with multiple language barriers.

Ah. What is the syncing at start up then? I always assumed that was my character being saved. On the games properties i have a box checked that says Cloud syncing enabled and when I reformated my pc my game save was still there.

Next game that no longer supports the old consoles will be beautiful and give the engine it's time to shine.

I got Dark Souls 1 for $30.

BTW, any news about VAC protection is it going to be hacker haven?

The downside of this is with modding. How can people mod stuff if you have to disable it everytime you go online. (I'm not very knowledgeable about how VAC works so I might be wrong in assuming it doesn't allow mods)

agreed!

To be fair the roll hasn't even started properly, the player clearly dodged to late.

Well, the most convincing argument for the disproportionate outrage which I've seen so far is that they were showing off their vertical slice build too recently. Which honestly seems like a flimsy reason to lose your shit.

Bullshot material was used on the very box of the console version.
I know many do this, it doesn't make it alright.

Don't know if complaining can be put under the blanket of "lose your shit" though.
-
I'm fine with them being transparent, finally, about the PC version looking bad.

Still not seeing this and I have two copies of the game! Can someone point out these bullshots?

How recent is too recent? Where do we draw the line on misrepresentation? How long can a developer show something which will never see daylight?

Now all that needs to happen is a next gen console version with the predowngrade lighting and assets and we'll know the fix was in from the start. Get that wallet ready for the triple dip ;)

Native downsampling confirmed

Bkt-tl9CMAAdI9x.jpg
Fuck yeah! 8k downsampling screenshots out of the box are go. Still need some way to turn off the HUD :P

Now I can even live with a 60 FPS limit. (Did anyone try to go beyond that?)

Oh, and reposting this for the new page:
compare9iszk.gif

(Will certainly look significantly better when not from a video, and downsampled ;)

I wasn't talking about people just complaining, that's fine. I specifically meant those who took it beyond reasonable bounds.

stupid 'lazy devs' comment aside, ive heard the console sales argument before and i dont really get it. how would releasing a better looking pc version impact sales? it already looks better than consoles. i can understand wanting to release on consoles first to curb piracy somewhat, but i dont think they think releasing a better looking pc version does anything sales wise other than increase pc sales a bit.

This isn't nearly as big a deal as some are making it out to be. The website probably doesn't get much traffic at all, and chances are it's peripheral even specifically to From's marketing team.

"What liars!" is not what people should take away from their website having outdated screenshots.

Why wouldn't they?

Because that's a huge leap from the improvement in resolution, textures, and FPS that were actually promised. Because the version of the game with the original lighting was a significantly different game, extending all the way to actual gameplay, and games are very rarely so different platform to platform.

It's likely these assets never existed beyond the vertical slice. If they are going to put that much work into the (possible) next gen port, we'll wait for a while.
