Dark Souls II - Graphics Comparison - PC Preview

I'll grab it in a steam sale probably, but for now i'll stick to PS3 version.

"Remembers how the PS3 version is already plagued with people that downloaded the megamule savegame"...

Or not....

From is starting to ban people ho have modified safe files.

I'm curios how the dedicated server solution is set up and how it works.

From what I have read the combat is still p2p but the dedicated servers handle matchmaking. Which is why it's easier to connect to people but there can still be lag when playing online.

And cut out the already out base of 360 and PS3? that would have been a stupid move.

There are plenty of other companies that release cross-gen games. Metro 2033, Metro Last Light, the Witcher 2, Crysis 2 & 3, and others that I'm forgetting had versions that could run on PS3 and 360 and yet had amazing lead-on-pc versions that still drop jaws to this day.

Ugh, this just happened to me in NG+, the skybox killed itself (just like it did at
Drangleic Castle
)

I have found a gamefaqs thread of other people experiencing the same problem and they appear to all be PAL PS3 users (like me). I really hope this error gets resolved in the upcoming update but I somehow doubt it as it was missing from the list of fixes...

NTSC PS3. Skybox is fucked for me too.

From has been, or at least has the capability to, ban people who are using hacked saves like that. After probably 200 hours I haven't run into a single player who is (obviously) megamuling. I hear people are using it to invade with end game gear while keeping their soul memory low. At least the megamules in DS1 didn't do anything you couldn't do legitimately.

Sneaky big lebowski joke :D

Anyway, I think From deserves some shit for the way they showed off the game earlier I think they also deserve some props for sending out the PC build and letting the press show it off quite a while in advance of release. If they were trying to hide anything they're at least not anymore.

Can someone do a WIF of the GB footage where the dynamic lighting is shown? When they light the first sconce, around the 15 minute mark i think? It showed that the dynamic lighting is still in place, but seemed to be only with that sconce oddly enough

edit @ 16:50 in the GB vid

Saw your edit too late and wound up making mine end a bit before that, but here you go.

What really? Jesus talk about ruining the game for yourself.

They're not ruining the game for themselves if ruining the game for others is how they enjoy the game. And if my time playing the PC port of DS is any indication this chunk of the playerbase is not inconsiderable.

Lighting/shadows like that is even in the PS3 version. When you light a bonfire for example. It's just not everywhere like in the pre-release footage.

They are banning people for glitching and using that now, it seems they did a hard sweep and will continue to do so.

Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo... NEXT GEN CONFIRMED. Right?

There is no way they scrapped the whole lighting engine for console and PC. Heck, the even said they built the engine with next gen in mind.

PS4 double dip time everyone.

I knew it. Told you they would hold out and release the DEFINITIVE EDITION on PS4/XB1. Poor PC souls who waited in hopes of getting 'the' version.

I think the most appropriate response for me is to wait until this is on sale on Steam. This isn't the product I imagined I was waiting for when I passed on the console version. This fiasco reminds me somewhat of the Aliens Colonial Marines situation.

Now, Dark Souls 2 is still a great game and I'm sure that the graphical boost to the PC version and some mods will improve things but I want to send a message to Namco Bandai and From that this kind of thing needs to stop. Marketing materials should best reflect the final product as soon as possible. I don't want to be shown a prototype engine and then not informed that, because of current gen hardware, that game is then impossible to deliver even on PC.

Am I missing something here? When did they confirm a next-gen version? Even if they did, why would it be upgraded?

Maybe scrapped and saved for DS3 Next Gen Consoles and PC perhaps.

Odds are the 'lighting engine' people talked about on GAF was just a bunch of tweaked variables (more shadows, different processing, different dynamic range).

I suspect the lighting model is easy enough to CHANGE, but not so easy to test to make sure it looks right everywhere...

hahahahahaha looks the same.

FROM is not retarded, they are going to release the definitive next-gen version with the DLC packaged in and go to the bank.

Plus short loading times and gorgeous shiny metal reflections. It truly is the definitive version to play.

Is this another of the myths going around like PC version being "darker" when it's very clearly not?

Because IGN video showed absolutely no difference from PS3 besides resolution (and the difference is comparable with DS1, so I'm doubting DS2 has better assets).

On the one hand, I do want to see those sweet, sweet DSII webms. On the other hand, I don't want to have any more of the game spoiled for me!

aargh these decisions!

;_;

how to squander the goodwill of your fanbase in three easy steps...

If they were to release a PS4 version that allowed us to carry the save over from PS3, I'd buy it in an instant.

Giant Bomb video shows that the Pursuer's armour is a lot more reflective and shinier than the console versions. Same with the reflections on shields and so on.

Sure, but those are all games by European PC exclusive developers that after being successful expanded out to also doing console ports, whereas From went the other way.

This is so strange, I know its not unheard of for games (even PC) to take a drastic drop in graphical features. I still remember Oblivion which must be 8 years ago now which had a similar lighting downgrade.

But could this mean that we are being set up for some sort of enhanced edition on PS4 or something? It seems strange they would create something, then downgrade it when there is no need to.

There certainly seems to be a lot of speculation about that right now but there is no indication that this is the case. I would not be surprised to see a current gen port in the next 6-12 months, but I would be surprised if they re-worked and re-balanced the whole game to support the original lighting engine design. Not gonna happen. It will be a straight port of the PS360 version at best.

Actually, I posted a comparison earlier which clearly shows increased texture and shadow resolution, so it's not just rendering resolution.

"The same solid framerate as the Xbox 360 version"

huh
heh

So it'll still look as rough as a bear's arse in certain areas *cough*Shaded Woods*cough* just like the console version, but it'll at least run at 1080p/60FPS without a fan made patch.

I can live with that, but I'm definitely not happy with it.
