Dark Souls III - PC Performance article

40fps with a 980, no wonder the console's can't hold 30fps. I have absolutely no faith in From Software when it comes to performance so I doubt it'll ever be fixed, like the frame time issues that were ignored. I guess I'd drop into the 30s with a 970 and I'd rather burn my money than support shit like that, it's just not good enough.

Wait, it ran in 4k on max settings, didn't it?

I'm betting a GTX 970 will run the game max settings at 1080p at 60 FPS most of the time. The only exceptions being those areas where the CPU core utilisation takes the biggest toll.

You'll probably get 60 FPS most of the time as long as AMD's cards run the game as they should. A GTX 980 does 1080@60 with about 50% of the GPU being used.
Drops seem tied to the CPU (due to the game hammering one core instead of spreading the load)

That's what I am worried, as FX8350 has weak single core processing iirc

Biggest disappointment for me is the lack of Steam Cloud support. As someone who jumps between a desktop and laptop pretty regularly constantly transferring save files is going to be a major pain :(

I lost my first Dark Souls 2 save file after a reformat by being a dummy and thinking it had Steam Cloud support. I've now added the folder to my Dropbox.

Any benchmarks with a 7950/280? Would like to know if I'll be able to get a steady 60 on High or at least lock it to 30 on Ultra.

It does look awfully pretty like. Jim Sterling did a Jimpressions video the other night and I think he sums it up very well.

(The video is also hilarious.)

Sounds like maybe it's a good thing that the release is still a few weeks away, based on some of the crashing people are reporting.

Same here.

I bought the ds2 season pass a few months ago and re-installed ds2 only to find out it didn't have the cloud support. Wasn't happy about that. I thought about downloading a finished save (minus the dlc) but I didn't want to risk getting banned. I might play through ds2 again someday to experience the dlc but I just don't have the time for that right now. I was also surprised when I saw that SotFS didn't support cloud saves either. The fact that ds3 doesn't have support is even more baffling. It can't be that difficult to implement.

Also, does ds3 use Denuvo?

I hope it's playable at the minimum requirements. I've got an HD 6870 and I was really really hoping to be able to wait for Pascal. But, man, this is gonna be the last new Dark Souls. I wanna get the experience of playing it while it's still new to the community.

Seeing that footage makes me honestly feel bad for people that have to play on a console only.

Though I have to say I'm disappointed to see the magnetic torso's on bosses are back from 2.

I was on the fence on which version to get, PS4 or PC. If the quality/performance was on par with Bloodborne, I wouldn't mind getting it for the PS4 and enjoy playing it in the comfort of my couch. After seeing that video it looks like I'm moving my PC to the living room.

I watched a PC stream yesterday where they were lagging badly in one area with a 4770K and a GTX 680. I'm thinking I might have to cap it at 30fps on my 6700K/7870XT.

Still deciding between PS4 and PC for this. In the past I have normally done console version first, and then bought the rerelease with packed in DLC on Steam sales later on. Is cheating a thing within the PC community in PvP? That was always a plus side of the consoles that hacking was harder to do. But 60 fps is pretty tempting.

That's how a Souls game should run. Do we know anything about how much PC improves loading times?
Installed to an SSD my loading times are so low that I haven't actively noticed them so far. I'll have precise timings in my article, but it's certainly less than 5s.

60? Hell, with the console versions the way they are, even 30 could be considered an improvement.

I'm not even expecting to get 60 at 1440p (GTX-680), but if I can get above 40 or so, G-sync will take care of the rest, keep it nice and smooth.

I was wondering if you'd be putting together another Dark Souls article, I'm looking forward to it!

One of the things that bugged me about DS2 SSD was that I couldn't read item descriptions during load times. It went too fast.

Is steam link compatibility different from normal Steam streaming compatibility? I can check the latter.

I think it's the same, but I can't be sure. If it works with normal streaming I'll assume it works with steam link, as I imagine steam link would have fewer compatibility issues than regular streaming seeing that it's built specifically for the purpose.

Thanks, thats the deciding factor on PC vs PS4 for me.

I just tried streaming to my laptop, and it worked well with no perceptible performance loss and standard in-home streaming latency. Eminently playable.
(Note that this is just based on a few minutes of testing, but I can't really imagine it differing in different areas)

Great! Thanks! Pre-order is in :)

It would help if you quoted what you are talking about.

I'm guessing this

980 non Ti.

Looks like the game has shitty CPU thread usage. (minor spoilers of NPC and enemies)

Burn your money? Really? I'm guessing you didn't play previous Souls games on console. Performance was lacking, but the games were still great.

To each his own I guess. I'm expecting 50-60fps at med-high settings on my 7870XT/6600K@4400MHz

what kind of performance do you think i can expect from a 980m? I would like to hit 1440p/60fps most likely turning off motion blur, depth of field, and anti aliasing.

I can do 30 FPS. It's not ideal, but it's the price you pay for not having a newer graphics card.

Watching videos of this, the graphics are absolutely insane.
