Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

This game feels remarkably smooth for a 30fps title. I guess it's a combination of motion blur and the total lack of stuttering (remember, many 60fps titles such as The Witcher 2 suffer from stuttering problems).

I actually agree.

30 fps is looking so smooth because of the animations, no stuttering, and I haven't seen a frame drop yet.

Everything is going much better than expected, admittedly a large part of that is due to durante.

This.

If devs need to lock their framerate at 30FPS for some reason, they really should have a look at this port. I have never been so.... pleased with a PC game running at 30FPS, and that's because it's actually a smooth 30.

I should also add that devs should avoid looking to this port for anything else though :P

I just did a fresh install of darksouls via steam. i applied the mod as said in the readme and it doenst work.
When i load up a game the whole screen is black with a few grey square's in it. What gives? i dont use any oc tools or any of that stuff.

Turn off the in-game antialiasing option.

So is there any benefit to downsampling if the max resolution is 1080p? What does setting it to 2x that resolution do for me? Thanks!

It renders internally at a higher resolution. This is a better AA option both quality and performance wise than normal AA. Besides the ingame AA is garbage anyways.

It was just one guy, and they jumped on him pretty quickly to be fair.

And from the sound of this comment, the guy's a pretty frequent troll too.

'Neverdeed' is probably the biggest troll on GB these days. Want a few more recent examples? He made a comment where many were praising Fez, and he tried very hard to completely bury it and even call it "shovelware", which isn't even using the term correctly. He goes on bombcast comments and says "the quality of the bombcast has gone down drastically recently, dont expect it to be good guys". It's sad he's so persistent, because he's not even funny. At least amusing trolls aren't a complete waste of space.

Unfortunately, I think his stirring everyone up this time was his most successful attempt yet.

When you render something at a much higher resolution and then downsample, you get less jaggies. It's the best kind of AA, as it doesn't blur the edges.

That's how I understand it, anyway.

Supersampling is so incredible. Just compared 1080p native with 3840*2160...the differences in motion are enormous.

I wish I could just give you the money I'll be giving Namco for this game.

Buy the game for $32 on GMG with the coupon and give the $8 you saved to Durante. :)

Not only do you get less jaggies, but you get less texture aliasing, which traditional AA does nothing to help with. You get a truly pristine image.

You can't get IQ like this with simple AA:

Also, I might make a request of Durante, though you should probably consider this super low priority. Would it be possible to bind a key to turn on/off the HUD? If it's very trivial to implement, it would be greatly appreciated, as we could create some really cool screenshots without it. :)

Also what sucks: Destructoid. Specifically Jim Sterling, Master Troll.

You. I like you.

Also this is amazing. That shot of the swamp? Holy shit.

This reminds me of playing FFXII in 1080p, they made these amazing looking textures, but them in the game, but you cant see them due to the low resolution so they just sit there wasted!!

Ill still wait for a sale becuase Im poor

Thank you thank you thank you!

No more motion sickness! I finally get to play Dark Souls! Game looks Gorgeous with 2x super sampling and no dips yet. You are just such a boss.

I don't know much about downscaling/supersampling, and I was wondering if yall could help me understand it a little more. I'm playing the game on my 1080p HDTV. My desktop resolution and in-game resolution are both set to 1920x1080p 60Hz. It has been suggested to me that, in the DSFix.ini, I set the resolution to 2560x1440. Can someone help me with the math behind this? is this the sweet spot? Does the DSFix.ini resolution even really matter? I assume it would just need to be a 16:9 ratio

So what was the locked resolution down to? Was it complete incompetence by From Software or are there massive performance drops with anything over 720?

Performance is fantastic with the DSFix installed. I'm running an aging machine (Q6600) and very rarely see less than 30fps (the fixed framerate.)

This fix works great, other than message text not being rendered. When that gets fixed this thing will be perfect, nicely done :D

Maybe I'm jumping the gun here quite a bit, but could we be looking at techniques that next-gen games could use to achieve visuals as clear and sharp as this?

EDIT: I probably am, but I've never heard of supersampling or seen it in action, and the results are amazing. The console versions don't even hint at detail like this in the environments.

PC games? Sure. A few already do this, such as The Witcher 2 and Sleeping Dogs.

For consoles? No way. Only the hardcore graphics enthusiasts really appreciate the improved IQ, and it doesn't come cheap in terms of performance.
