Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

So I can't do internal resolution at 3840x2160 (frames just sink), but I'm good with 1920x1080.

Does anyone with internal res set at 1920x1080 have any recommended settings?

My current settings:
Internal Res: 1920x1080
SMAA: 4
SSAO: 2
dof resolution OD: 810
dof scaling OD: 0
dof Blur Amount: 2

With my settings should the trees look like or should I change a setting value.

The fix has issues with transparent textures at the moment, thats the norm for places like Darkroot Garden.

I don't get the screenshots, and I can't find any info in the readme... I press F6 (looks like that's the key in the keybinding readme), I also tried page down, I don't get any screens. where do they go?
edit: wait it's disabled by default?

Awesome fix! Only issue I see is with the HUD toggle - when the HUD is hidden, you can still see the "A" button when near something with an action (unless this is intentional, of course.) Bringing up the main menu results in the same issue - no actual menus are visible, only the button prompts remain.

Also, any insight to the banding shadows? It seems to be an issue that was present before your mod. Low shadow resolution perhaps? I don't think I'm the only one with this issue.

After all you've done, I've decided to donate once more. You definitely deserve that + a break!

In my case it's:

2560x1440 internal, downscaled to 1920x1080
SMAA 4 (though I may tone this down)
SSAO 2
DoF 1080
DoF blur 2

Go into the file and remove the # signs before the lines. If the # sign is there it's disabled.

Does anyone else get random GPU usage hiccups where the usage goes down and up sporadically, causing the framerate to jump all over the place? The game runs at a steady 30 FPS for 5-10 minutes then the issue starts and last for a few minutes before returning to normal. The few minutes that it happens are unplayable though, since the framerate jumps between 10 and 25 FPS repeatedly.

I'm running a 7970 with these settings:

Res: 3840x2160
smaa: 4
ssao: 2
dofOverride: 1080
dofBlur: 2

The same thing happens at lower settings, though, so I'm not sure what would be causing it. Thanks in advance.

3840x2160
1080 dof
4 smaa
1 ssao
2 gaussian blur

Higher resolutions drop the framerate to 15 too often for my taste.

thanks! my pc imploded but didn't get kicked from the game for framerate issues :).

Also I notice the HUD hiding still displays the button prompts and the weapon modification (lightning for example). I was wondering if it is possible to customize which elements appear? or to completely redesign the hud :D ah whatever.

Also a question for you Corky - I've been seeing some posts that 4:3 monitor owners should use their monitor resolution, but i seem to be getting a much better frame rate by downscaling 1920x1080 to 1600x1200 instead of just using 1600x1200.

This has been discussed already but..does that make sense or should i really stick to using 4:3 resolution since the black bars and the game letterbox are treated as the actual game display (i thought the blackbars are independent of the resolution i am setting with DSfix).

So I am still getting the issue where the game launches but no window is shown.
The exe's are running (data.exe and Dark souls.exe) but no game is showing, this is after putting an unmodified 1.1 fix in the right directory. If I take out and put .8 it works fine.

any ideas?

Which button is taking a screenshot changed to? in the ini file it says VK_NEXT. What button is that? Tried to change it to F5, but didn't work.

Look at sun ray

I only manage to get screen shot of sun ray with FRAPS only !

Remove the # sign.

Not working, the # was already there. Don't think that needs to be removed, but tried doing that and still not working. Will have to revert to DSfix1.0.

edit: The original button was VK_NEXT, what button is that? Can someone please answer? Enter button? (still not working though)

Both shots are awesome guys, care to post what settings your using?

1440p
1080 DoF
DoF blur 1
SMAA 1
SSAO 1
16x AF in Nvidia Inspector

IMO anything above DoF blur 1 is overkill. As you can see in my shot, 1 is plenty.

gogow: next is page down, you need to remove the # before the command.

Remove the # from the line you need to use :)

i'm using

takeHudlessScreenshot VK_F11

Ok, restarted the game and is now working. Not sure why taking screenshots isn't turned on by default, while that was the case with all the previous versions. Missed so many screenshots :(

But removing the hud with the hotkey still gets me this, not everything is removed. And if you get close to the bonfire, the Xbox A button shows up.

Have you tried forcing AA and AF through RadeonPro or CCC? AMD cards appear to go into a lower power state while running this game and the only way to prevent the issue is to force the card to work harder. I had the same issue day 1 and forcing 4x MSAA and 16X Anisotropic filtering with RadeonPro.

I couldn't tell ya mate, I have no idea why that is the case. With regards to performance, 1920x1080 and 1600x1200 are both around 2 million pixels so I don't believe there is actually that big of a difference between them performance wise.

The #, in both ini files, means comment. Everything after it is ignored. That's why the instructions have a # in front of them ;)
I guess I should explain that somewhere!

Anyway, I just spent a few hours actually playing the game. And such a great game it is. Oh, and before that I spent some time tweaking the SSAO more, the lines in the distance are gone now, flickering is (slightly) reduced and performance should be better. I tested it in areas that are problematic (like the woods) and it's useable without too many artifacts there now, at least on low and medium.

IMO anything above DoF blur 1 is overkill. As you can see in my shot, 1 is plenty.
It depends on your DoF resolution. But I think at 1080 it needs at least 2 to be similar to the original effect. Of course, it's not like it needs to be the same as the original, but I prefer it that way.

I know that now lol, but I find it strange that with the latest version, taking a screenshot is disabled by default and set to yet another button. Anyway, thanks for the great work!

It's because people were inadvertently taking screenshots. Now no one can complain about that, since they need to set the key by themselves and see it. I even considered turning off all the keybindings, but there were never any complaints about those 3 F buttons.

Yeah a few of the HUD elements still stick around, i.e. the weapon modifiers. I'm using a Chaos sword and the symbol still remains on the bottom left.

Hudless screenshot still works well, albeit those bmps are massive ;)

Ah, I see, makes sense then. But yeah, would make for less confusion if you explained what # is doing if it's in front of a instruction. Because in the other DSfix.ini, there's a # in front of all the instructions.

You are awesome. :)

That seems to have worked. For whatever reason RadeonPro causes a crash on startup, but I may have inadvertently set something extra to cause that, so I'll take a look. CCC works just fine, though. Got through the Depths and Gaping Dragon without a hitch.

I originally was running RadeonPro when 0.1 was released, but stopped using it because it didn't seem to be doing anything at the time.

Yeah I noticed this as well, the button prompts aren't too big of an issue but the weapons modifications are a bit more annoying. I imagine they are being drawn after the HUD.

Regardless, great work, I got the game thanks to your efforts and I'm nearing 30 hours of gameplay already, I'll be sure to donate when I have the possibility to do so.

Nah, it's just that I seem to have missed that texture when adding stuff to my "known HUD texture" list. I'll be sure to fix that in the next release, should be rather simple.

Ssao is out of the question for me, the performance hit is too great, oh well, the new blur is lovely though, very happy with this version.

Thanks Durante

Here's a comparison of 1080 DoF blur 1 vs 2 @ Anor Londo:

Blur 1

data2012-09-0917-15-5ckska.png

Blur 2

data2012-09-0917-17-53ju7q.png

The difference is more noticeable with those buildings down in the forest area, and the big tower section in the castle. I think both look pretty good. Blur 1 keeps a bit more detail while still having a pretty nice DoF effect, but Blur 2 may be more true to the original intention.

Man, is this game that poorly optimized? I'm trying to run the game at just the base, nothing else fancy turned on like the AA or DOF or AF overides, and i'm barely hitting playable framerates. It's especially bad when I look in a certain direction in the starting area.

This location is a trouble spot, I get a ton of slowdown just looking near it. If I don't look in that direction my framerate is higher, but still kinda shit. Looking in the direction of this, even when down the hall or at the ladder in the next room, insta FPS drop into the single digits.

Core2Quad @2.4Ghz
8GB RAM
GTX460

I know my rig's kinda old, but I should be able to run this thing at 1080p without the fancy shit, right?

I'd be very surprised if it was, but i'm just scratching my head with it. I'm able to run Witcher 2 at medium-high and Alan Wake at almost max and keep acceptable framerates, but for this game I can't seem to get it to remain playable which is kind of a need for a game that needs some good reaction times.

Ah ok, good to hear!

Anyone with a 560ti want to tell me their settings? Mine isn't the most playable right now.

2500k @ 4.5
8gb DDR
Gtx 560ti
I have a similar build (4Gb though) and I'm using the following:

2880x1620 (downscaled to 1080p)
SSMA 3
SSAO 2
DOF 540
DOF Blur 1
