Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Haha, that worked? Ingenuity.

I've played it to death on the PS3 but wanted to see the new content and it was so cheap for PC on Amazon it was hard to pass up. It's obviously a small sensitivity problem with the game and what my controller is prepared to put out, like I said it's fine for everything else. As we all know though, they did such a great job on the port that altering or customising pad controls in any shape or form was deemed totally unnecessary.

I can't believe there isn't even an .ini file anywhere in sight (other than for dsfix).

I had that same problem as well. It only happened with a 360 controller. Using a ps3 controller with motioninjoy + xbox controller emulation didn't have that problem at all, or if it did I didn't notice it. Used to using the ps3 controller anyway since I played Demon's/Dark Souls on ps3 originally, was only using the 360 pad temporarily. Dunno why that happens with 360 pads though.

I'll keep this in mind when I grab it on PC.
Didnt know about the issue with 360 controllers.

This is why I ditched my wired 360 pad and went third party. Being able to look left in Dead Space 2 was kind of important.

Should SSAO really be destroying my performance that bad? I have SLI GTX 580s and using the 60 fps unlock, but I can only use SSAO if I don't downsample. I should be able to render at 2560x1600 on a 1920x1200 monitor and retain 60 fps. Instead, I am getting mid 40s-50s. Is that normal?

Turning off SSAO gives me 60 fps all the time. If I render at my monitor's resolution and turn on SSAO, then I get 60 fps too.

So it's either turn SSAO off and downscale or lower resolution to my monitor's and use SSAO. Kind of odd I can't use both. Unless there is an SLI profile that works? Anyone know?

It's normal, Downsamping is quite a performance hitter anyway.

I can play at 60 fps with a single 560Ti at 1440p resolution with SMAA and SSAO on.

You can use the new SSAO scale feature to do the SSAO at lower-than-screen-res, particularly if you are downsampling anyway. (Set the SSAO scale to 2 instead of 1)

I seem to be getting worst performance with 1.9, I can never go to 60fps now, its around the 50s
Did you check if you are still using the same settings? I think I changed some default by accident in the 1.9 release.

That's strange. Can you try hitting the 30 FPS limit key (backspace by default) twice?

Worked.

I tried this and it helped a little. Getting low 50s rendering at 2560x1600 on 1920x1200 native. Dropping it to 2240x1400 got me to the mid 50s but I can't seem to maintain 60 unless I either turn off downsampling or turn off AO and use the other.

Any other suggestions? I really wish there was a working SLI profile for this game (I get the same fps with it on and with it off).

How do I get fullscreen with no black bars mode to use my monitor's screen resolution (1440x900)? 1440x810 looks hideous, and I can't seem to get it to change.

Yeah, its not working for me. I even dug through the hidden appdata folder and changed the screen resolution in the config file. It keeps jumping back to it.

Couple of questions:

1) The loading screen text and main menu text are blurry. Is that supposed to happen?
2) The health bars for bosses and the status effect bars are all off:

How can I fix these?

Both questions have been addressed repeatedly, but...

1) Grab the high resolution font pack from Dark Souls Nexus.
2) You have to switch to the normal UI for out-of-the-ordinary situations like boss fights. This is why there is a hotkey to switch.

Oh, awesome.
Thanks. Sorry I didn't read the whole thread first, thanks for being patient.

# Enable variable framerate (up to 60)
# NOTE:
# - this requires in-memory modification of game code, and may get you banned from GFWL
# - there may be unintended side-effects in terms of gameplay
# - you need a very powerful system (especially CPU) in order to maintain 60 FPS
# - in some instances, collision detection may fail. Avoid sliding down ladders

... should I just consider that required legal mumbo jumbo and go ahead doing it without a worry anyway?

Yes, I don't think there has been a confirmed report of it happening yet.

EDIT: And besides that, it does indeed causes some bugs.

I just couldn't keep my greasy fingers away from this game with the current weekend sale. Durante, you are a god amongst men!

However, I simply can't seem to get the unlockFPS command to work. As soon as I set it to 1 the game won't start (executable has stopped working). Other than that the DSFix seem to be working just fine. I would greatly appreciate if somebody could help med figure this out. :)

1.7 does the exact same thing the later versions do. In general, I can't see "dowgrading" ever helping.

One idea to try for everyone who can't get the FPS unlock feature to work would be to disable Data Execution Prevention (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-Data-Execution-Prevention-settings).

That did the trick! Consider my mind blown by the fluency of 60 fps in this game.

As soon as my paycheck arrive, I'll make sure to throw some money at you! Thank you very much!

This works brilliantly. The game looks great. Blows the console version away. Can't wait til I reach Blighttown and I can actually play it without getting a headache!

Thanks a lot for this. Dark Souls was already in my top 10 of all-time, and now there's a version of it which makes the game basically perfect with the tech issues fixed!

I'm going to donate a bit of cash to this because I got the game for so cheap on Amazon. I hope you've made a nice bit of cash to buy yourself something cool, Durante! Have an extra 5 euro :)

I have this in the mail, but in Zavvi time. Sould be here for Christmas, at least.

So, what performance should I be looking at with either a i5 750 at standard clock (I can OC, but I never needed to so far) and a 5850 that is OC`d 20% or so? Alternatively, a 7870 DD from XFX Gigahertz edition (not Black) that is crossfired in my brother's pc, but that he might not need (his 6950s got upgraded to two 7870s when the original cars went wonky, instead of getting the same cards as replacement). No idea how far I could OC that one.

Cant wait for this game to arrive.

I'm ready to smack some bitches and die a lot, just like I did in Risen, when I got into intense fights with skellies that could one-shot me right in the beginning. Or that saurus priest I met exploring, that was a 30 minute fight (but I abused quicksaving in that one, everytime I made a sizeable dent in him I had to run away and save, then immediately dodge when loading after he one-two-shotted me, but hey, Obisidian sword!).

If you want to maintain 60 FPS, you should probably OC that CPU a bit. Graphically you should be fine at 1080p with bells and whistles, but probably no crazy downsampling.

You should put this in the readme if its not all ready.
Yeah, I will, I'll also put it in the next update. I only found out about it recently, but it seems to solve many of the mysterious startup crash issues with unlocked FPS.

THANK YOU! Disabling Windows DEP worked. Game runs at a buttery smooth 60fps. Coincidentally, I've had to use that trick before for other games to work, but I didn't think of it when trying to play Dark Souls.

Might by worth mentioning the processor type/manufacturer as it may depend on that whether DSfix is affected by the NX bit.

Awesome sig. Would you happen to know what the announcer says during the Wolfsteam intro (for example in road avenger)?

sorry for the derail
