lol, thats too funny. Makes me want to start doing comedy invasions. I didn't even know you could two hand a shield. What difference does it make over one handing? Surely it only affects it's attack power?

Having never done it, I'd imagine it improves stability and reduces stamina drain on attacks compared to one-handing.

I'm picturing this in my head and cackling like a maniac.

It was definitely not a typical Capra run. I was the first phantom summoned and the next couple of summoning attempts apparently failed, and in the meantime the host was running around doing the two-handed shield bash as if to say "Look, I know this seems crazy, but I can totally still attack!"

I just shrugged. And I did not see the host throw a single shield bash after passing through the fog door.

I got invaded by a dude two-handing a shield. He poked me with it for about 15 damage. I was very confused, even moreso when he began moving towards me, facing backwards. Needless to say I didn't look a gift horse in the mouth and promptly backstabbed him. One of the weirder encounters I've had in this game.

Aw, somebody who invades the same way I do. I prefer doing the prostration emote and the Channeler's Trident dance, personally, but doing a bit of a clueless turtle routine has its charms.

Yeah, I guess that would be the logical thing. Just wondering if they actually bothered to put that in the game. I suppose it makes sense in the context of co-op, like the Capra turtle guy.

I think I am playing this game wrong... I'm really taking my time with each area (just completed Anor Londo), grinding for items and upgrading weapons and armor and am now about 90 hours in on my first playthrough. I absolutely love grinding and am now SL 90 and have maxed out 50 STR and am wielding a Lightning+5 Zweihander that so far kills everything with ease. Right now I'm farming the two Royal Sentinels near the princess chamber for Titanite Chunks. Beside the chunks, each run provides 7300 souls which is not bad at all.

when you access guide information for dark souls online or in the book, what do you look for the most?

I usually am looking for item upgrades and if i don't have the stone for it, where to get the stone, other stuff as well but thats the thing i search for the most

You're not playing it wrong. I took over 100 hours on my first playthrough, spent a lot of time upgrading my gear and finished the game at about sl 80. Then I did ng+ going from 80 to 100, which is where I'm sat at now, planning to go up to 120 on my next playthrough. Just having difficulty deciding where to put my last 20 levels. One of the cool things about the game is that you can go at your own pace and be as under or over leveled as you want, the choice is yours.

I definitely plan on doing NG+ later so hopefully the difficulty will come then. Most of my deaths are from falling off cliffs etc. I suck at traversing areas that have a lot of narrow beams (such as Great Hollow).

I usually check the online guides for stuff I need to upgrade. I'm kinda OCD about upgrading. I always want to upgrade a whole set in one time. So for example, right now I want to upgrade and max out (minus the last part that needs the titanite slab) the Elite Knight Set. I checked online and you need 6 chunks to get each set item to +9. So I need 6 x 4, 24 chunks. Now I'm grinding for those chunks and won't upgrade before I can do all of them in one go. Does anyone else do this? I feel like I'm alone in this crazy habit. :p

Also, I'm not sure where to put my points. I have 40 END, 50 STR, 20-something VIT. Thinking about some Faith or INT to be able to cast better spells. Any suggestions? I mostly want to stay melee though. One day I'll create a dedicated caster character.

I just got summoned to help somebody with the Capra Demon who was two-handing a shield with the Grass Crest Shield strapped to her back.

Clearly someone deeply concerned about survivability.

That's awesome and makes twisted sense. I wonder if you can carry a shield in each hand. Strap the Grass Crest Shield to back and you're golden. Then do the Come at me bro emote.

It's like Musashi with two shields.

Capra: *swings with both weapons*
You: *parries both at the same time with twin shields*
Capra: ....
You: I could've totally riposte-killed you there if I didn't have shields in both hands, ya know.

In areas that I would have no reason to return to later in the playthrough, I check one of the wikis to make sure I have all of the possible rings in the area. Missing the cloranthy ring and having to go back to
The Great Hollow
was no fun.

This guy PVP's with a bonewheel shield in each hand, naked. It looks like the one in the left hand is lightning and the one in the right hand in fire, and it does pretty good damage.

I hear you about being gear obsessive, it's always been what I've focused on more so than levels. Spent most of ng+ just upgrading gear with the souls I earned. About where to put points, I'm probably not the best person to ask but if you're wanting to get into pvp putting your vit up a little bit more would be wise. Not as important pve but having extra hp is handy with the harder hitting enemies in ng+. I'm having the same dilemma as you over whether to put points into faith or int as a melee character, just can't decide.

I got summoned for Capra about 10 times in an hour. Now I'm going on 30 minutes without a single taker for Gaping Dragon. C'mon peeps, I'm trying to earn a merit badge Sunlight Medal here.

Edit: Holy crap. I just went human and there are like 20 summoning signs around the bonfire alone. I begin to suspect my problem may be that it is a buyer's market for jolly co-operation buddies.

I hate how Ornstein's helm is missing the plume. It just looks incomplete without it. I understand that there aren't cloth physics on the player character for some reason, but why couldn't it just have been jiggleboned or something?

Also, it's dissappointing how cool the Brass Armor looks, yet it's stats are kinda assy.

I imagine there's no cloth physics for the player character because of how many different animations the player has to cause disaster for them. It's one thing for, say, the knights in the Undead Parish to have flowing capes because they only have a handful of attack and movement animations. It's another thing entirely for the player character to have a flowing cape while rolling, cartwheeling, casting spells, and attacking with dozens of different weapons. I imagine there'd be quite a few clipping issues.

Well, I know why they did it, but the plume's a rather important part of the design. Even stiff geometry or canned animations would look better than "nothing." Several pieces of armor have non-moving cloth, like the Giant or the Silver Knight armor, to say nothing of all the various robes and the Paladin set.

And it's not like there aren't lots of clipping issues anyway. Pretty much any helmet clips with the Black Knight torso, the hoods clip with pretty much everything, and Tarkus' helmet also clips through a lot of armor, just off the top of my head.

If you're looking to help try the Demon Ruins. I've been standing around for about 15-20 minutes hoping for a sign to show up, but I haven't seen one and I got invaded twice.

Not that far yet, unfortunately. I was expecting to be able to use Capra to get myself into the Warriors of Sunlight then use Gaping Dragon to get 10 Sunlight Medals to rank up. The Capra portion of the plan went swimmingly. The Gaping Dragon portion is faring far more poorly in practice than it did in theory. Going to try getting some action by dropping my sign at the Depths bonfire and if that doesn't work I'll probably head for Quelaag or Ceaseless Discharge. I doubt there's much action at Fire Sage or the Centipede Demon at SL 30.

Since there was a veritable summoning sign smorgasboard in the Depths I just availed myself of their services and beat the Gaping Dragon myself. One of the dudes I summoned was using the Spiked Shield two-handed with the Grass Crest Shield on his back. Is this a thing now? Some new trend? The Dark Souls equivalent of Planking?

The Bonfire at the bottom of Blighttown was pretty popular for me pre-patch. Only time so far I've seen three co-op summon signs at once, plus a red summons.

I think my problem was where I was putting my sign. Getting takers now that I'm throwing it down at the bonfire instead of the boss door. Never used to have any trouble with that, but it seems the customs have changed a bit.

I think boss door summons are rare because most people figure that if you're gonna get help clearing out a level, might as well do it from the bonfire, as insurance against invaders, and doing the whole level faster. And with 1.05's buyer's market, your sign comes in too late.

I like to do the level solo myself, and then summon help against the boss if it proves to be too difficult. The one time I got summoned outside the gargoyle boss door, the host already had a helper phantom near death; this was pre-1.05 so that was probably because of slim pickings anyway.

That reminds me of one of the best death replays from Demon's Souls

It was in Shrine of Storms 4-1, the area where the narrow cliff and gold skeletons. The guy had a shield in each hand, then he two handed one of the shields while the other was on his back, he stood there for a moment then rolled off the cliff.

Made me think "demons souls, it will make you go crazy"

I once got summoned right at the beginning of Anor Londo, and made it all the way to the Booby Temple, only to get inexplicably killed by Electrical Smough while I was on the other side of the room, he was looking in completely the opposite direction, and he wasn't even doing an attack- just chasing the host. I suddenly keel over for absolutely no reason. A few minutes later, I get a message from the host asking me WTF happened, as he saw it too. There wasn't a trace of lag in the game before that point.

I'm still kind of baffled by it.

Love the flowing capes on the Balder Knights. So badass. They should've given the Black Knights capes as well.

The Sliver Knights have them, albeit small ones. The Black Knights don't because
their bodies were incinerated when Gwyn relinked the flame, becoming cursed suits of living armor.

Yeah, back in the day I never had the least bit of trouble getting summoned near the boss door. I think the connectivity improvements have made it so easy to grab two phantoms right at the bonfire that there's not much point to picking up eleventh-hour help like that anymore. When I went human and decided to just kill the Gaping Dragon myself I immediately had about 4 visible signs, grabbed the one that was a fellow sunbro, then ignored all the filthy peasant white summoning signs and waited for another sunbro to show up. Took all of 30 seconds.

There's a dude role-playing Kirk, invading people in the Depths with the Barbed Straight Sword, the Spiked Shield, and the Armor of Thorns. I give the costume a 7/10, owing to the lack of authenticity provided by the fact that the sword and shield are clearly fully-upgraded Lightning versions, and the fact that he is wearing the Dark Wood Grain Ring. Kirk does not do cartwheels.

On a more general note, invasions in general seem rather frequent these days. The shift to summoning people at bonfires makes a lot of sense given that I have yet to escort a single person to the Gaping Dragon without an invasion occurring at some point.

Look, I'm not saying that sunbros are better than the average Joe at jolly co-operation, I'm just saying that average Joes are categorically inferior to sunbros.

At everything.

What's the best way to spend about half a million souls ?

I'm SL123 and I don't want to level anymore since I'm pretty content with where my guy is right now, but I really don't want to keep collecting souls and then losing them all of a sudden.

Would spending them on buying Twinkling Titanite and Dragonslayer Arrows be a wise choice ?

Spent almost an hour and a half farming for the Souvenirs of Reprisals in the Painted world then got my +1 rank with the Darkmoon Cov and killed the he/she Darksun Gywndolin to make my Darkmoon bow.

Now i need to defeat the bed of chaos then Kiln of the last flame to start NG++ for my plat.

Slowly getting there

Currently near the end of NG+ at SL 89

And yet you can't score with Gwynevere ( see all the Solaire fanart, it's really awesome). And you and your bro worship an easily parried God. I laugh in your general direction!

Seriously, though, Way of White is a weird covenant; do you get anything from it in story terms from
Petrus and Rhea
?

I have now encountered three separate players running around as female characters without any pants on. I do not remember this being a thing people routinely did when last I played. Is this a new trend, or has the patch's improved connectivity cast me out of my placid isle of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and I am being exposed now to the vast and unfathomable world which has always existed just beyond my doorstep?

Special no-pants update: the count is now up to five. Two in one game this time.

Way of White and Princess Guard are pretty much totally irrelevant. Princess Guard does let you cast two Miracles, but Way of White does bupkis, plot and gameplay-wise.

And the sunbros worship
Gwyn's Firstborn, not Gwyn himself.
No wonder they won't let you in.

I ran with Hollow Undead Armor and bare feet on my female Sorcerer for the first hour. It was quite sexy in an avant garde fashion statement kinda way. Until enemies could hear me clinking from a mile away and I switched to the thief robes.

Story-related stuff
Went to the Wiki to read up on Solaire and mind blown. He talks of coming to Lordran to meet Gwyn, and because you get into the covenant by praying to the broken statue, I thought Solaire is an adherent as well. But that he's the giver...is his hollowfication why the statue is broken? My eyes have been opened, I am not worthy!

Now I really wish From had given more story details in this game rather than relying on item descriptions.

I wonder, where is the best place to put my sign down to help people with the Gargoyles in NG+? I want to do more coop! I've only helped people twice with Quelag in NG. I'm level 75 btw, if it matters... :(

I doubt 99% of NG+ players will need help with them, but the summon spot is still in front of the elevators.

I hope someone does end up summoning me, else I would have to make another character I guess... but I'll miss all the nice gear I have :(

I'm now a Warrior of Sunlight btw, I had found the statue after the red drake glitched on me on NG and Solaire was there. Couldn't interact with it but I knew there was someone fishy!!

I'm wondering, now that EpicNameBro has moved on from doing videos of the game, are there any other people that have good walkthroughs for the areas after Anor Londo?

I'm thinking I may have to roll a new character after all... Maybe a STR + FAI one to do some jolly coop, and leave my NG+ character as a DEX+INT char.

What do you guys think? Is it too hard starting over after 100 hours? :p

You might get lucky. In my first play I was pretty high level, and randomly decided to put my sign down in the chuch on my way to the blacksmith area. I got summoned and it was obviously NG+. Three of us beat the first gargoyle up literally within 5 seconds.

I'm surprised Capra hasn't been anyone's worst boss so far. The difficulty curve for that boss is like falling off a cliff. Unless you had someone tell you how to beat it before hand, you just got your ass stomped 5-6 times, then you figure out the stairs/arch trick, then it's impossible to lose.

all you bastards moaning about dying to capra like 5-10 times before you clocked it, I died over 20 BLOODY TIMES before looking up the strategy online. I nearly went completely haywire, if I do ng+ those bloody dogs are getting a major sword up their backsides, I might even die to capra deliberately just so I can kill them again.

Quite the opposite, I found. All of the stuff at the beginning of the game that took me hours to painstakingly work my way through went by very quickly on my second playthrough. At 6 hours in, I'm ready to fight Quelaag. On my first playthrough, that probably took me at least 20 hours.

Start a new game. You'll enjoy it.

I started a new game and forgot to talk to Solaire twice to get my white soapstone.

I went ahead and defeated the gargoyles and went back to get my soapstone but Solaire was gone. I've read that he shows up again in Anor Londo, but noone mentioned if you could get the soapstone from him there. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm fine with starting over as I only have a few hours invested in this character.

If you top this off with watching the speed-runs, you'll get in the state of mind that they're in. "Why should you kill all of this riff-raff in the beginning, anyway? It's not like they give any souls. So just run through."

It's surprisingly easy, and I've rung both bells in an hour three times.

Finally made it through the Demon's Ruins last night, and finally got to
Gwyn.

I tried a few times before putting it up for the night, and going to bed.
I am thinking that I may try and kill the big blacksmith before I finish the game, to get to his chest behind him

I have had weapons break, but all the blacksmiths I got to don't seem to be able to repair those weapons. How does this system work in Dark Souls? I have the Crystal Halberd, which is great, but it gets to weapon risk very fast, and I can't find anyone that can repair it.

Also, my fire keeper is gone from Firelink, and so is the one from Anor Londo. I have 2 fire keeper souls, but I am not sure where I can upgrade my Estus Flask. NG+ or is there another fire keeper hiding somewhere?

Crystal weapons can't be repaired, everything else can be. As for another firekeeper
, there's a hidden one just past Quelaags boss fight room. Go down the stairs next to the bell switch and instead of taking the tunnel to Demon Ruins, look for a hidden door. Answer 'Yes' when asked.

question: how can i tell the pre-requisites for wearing armor "effectively"? i wanna be able to roll around freely..for example, i just got a suit of stone armor, where does it tell me what endurance i need in order to wear it and still be agile? or is that related to equipment burden? help!

You talking about the Anor Londo smith? You don't have to kill him to open it.
But it's pretty much standard practice to kill all NPCs before endgame anyway because there's no negative repercussions.

Equipment burden needs to be under 50% for full speed roll. I'm not even sure it's possible with stone armor (or any of the really heavy stuff) unless you double up havel's ring and wood grain ring. (Even at 99 end, equip burden is surprisingly low.)
