Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition |OT| Durante Does In 23 Minutes What From Can't

Got a weapon with bleed?

Have to look, don't know but if so, it's surely not upgraded. My Queelag is only +3 to begin with.

@Easymode

Yeah, that's how it feels. Demons Souls I liked the more I played it and I got better in it. For some weird reason, Dark Souls only gets worse and harder and harder.

I don't understand these upgrade paths either. Whenever I compare them using the wiki or the character planner, they actually seem like downgrades except for chaos which gets a very marginal boost.

Edit...

An example using the character planner:

40 Strength & 40 Faith

Divine Greataxe +10 = 302 physical / 416 magic (718 total)
Occult Greataxe +5 = 308 physical / 396 magic (704 total)

I don't see the point...

Edit 2: I was under the impression that occult/enchanted had better stat scaling.

If you have enough of the required stat, going the normal upgrade path is the best way to go. If you don't, elemental damage becomes amazing. For example, if you're a mage but want to have some melee damage as well, raising your Str/Dex just enough to use a weapon and then making it elemental can be extremely effective. Some upgrades also give additional scaling:

Divine/Occult gives a weapon Faith -scaling Magic damage.
Magic/Enchanted gives a weapon Intelligence -scaling Magic damage.
Raw/Fire/Chaos/Lightning is just non-scaling big damage. Late edit: Chaos is like Fire, but gives extra damage with Humanity. With 10 Humanity, it's much better than Fire.

Also elemental upgrades are best used on weapons with low natural scaling.
Thanks guys, it's definitely some confusing shit.

Do any other upgrade paths scale with humanity, or just Chaos?

You should have a lightning spear and maybe some chunks to upgrade it. That'll do the job.

Only Chaos scales with Humanity. Quelaag's Furysword/Chaos Blade also scales with Humanity, and the Chaos -pyromancies are rumoured to scale? I never noticed any difference with them though.

As for Divine/Occult.. Divine stops Skeletons from being resurrected and gives extra damage against the undead(at least Skeletons, not sure about Hollows), and Occult should work good against enemies of godly origin(Gwyndolin). Not sure about Magic/Enchanted.

OK I'll check...

I used an upgraded lightning spear but switched to Quelaag's furysword +5 or something. And at that point I became so confused by all the stats I pretty much stopped playing haha.

Not gonna happen this time though [since I'm a member and can actually ask questions]. I like the minimalism of the game but some core mechanics really could use an ingame explenation.

Also - Russian circusbear riding a pink car is awesome.

So, with the Bed of Chaos dealt with, half the Lord Souls remain. Lost Izalith was really pretty terrible, as advertised.

So now I have two choices I'm aware of, New Londo or the Duke's Archives. I think I'll go to New Londo first, it's been there, waiting me for a long time, so I feel I owe it a visit.

By the way, I seem to drive NPCs to their sad, early demise a lot more than I did in Demon's Souls. This time,
poor Siegmeyer killed himself for some reason after I helped him kill a bunch of monsters...

If you let him get below 50% health in that encounter he kills himself. :(

Victory achieved. I killed fire with fire. Now with the firefucker out of the way, I'm back at Queelags place. Where to go next? Did I already do what I had to do down there? I guess not? I found a huge door, but it's closed.

Ok, someone needs to clear this up for me, because I still don't know even though I've played through the game a couple times now.

What's the main difference between Fire and Chaos weapons? Similarly Magic/Enchanted, also +15/Raw and Divine/Occult. I don't know which is better for what.

From what I understand, the latter variants just go to +5 while the others can go to +10, but in turn they have less "stat scaling" (whatever stats are meant by that) - but at what point does the increased stat scaling of the +10 variants surpass the +5 of Chaos/Enchanted/Raw/Occult, if ever?

I don't understand these upgrade paths either.
Edit 2: I was under the impression that occult/enchanted had better stat scaling.

YEah it seems confusing but is actually prettty simple....Raw is virtually useless, but if you must know what it does, it basically splits the bonus between str and dex, when noramlly you would have a weapon that only has str or dex scaling. Usually it is better to just specialize in str or dex.....the bonus is not much more if you acutally do raise dex AND str high enough for it to make a difference. At low levels it will make your weapon worse guaranteed.

Same for DIvine/Occult and Magic /enchanted - a useless upgrade path for the most part but does a llow a magic character to get their favourite weapons scaling with magic instead of dex or str......most figure out that goign +15 with CRystal magic weapon or Darkmoon sunlight for faith is superior...so yeah...don't bother....and chosse a minor secondary in str or dex if you want to tweak your damage higher. Agian if you MUST know what the sillyness is about with the occult vs. enchanted it jsut makes specialists in INT or FAI get better stat bonuses at high levels...like 40-50 or it actually ends up being WORSE.

Chaos is very good actually and provides some of the best elemental damage in the game, even better than lightning in some instances...except those enemies who are resilient to fire so have some lightnign or magic buffable weapons on hand.....it is only better than FIre however if you ahve 9-10 humanity in the ticker..evne low levesl of humanity liek 1-2 will make your weapon WORSE than just plain fire.

Crystal is actually a trade off for increased damage (pretty high actually) and they can be buffed, but you can't repair them and they die when they die and that's it. DOn't do it to a washing pole or other rare weapon, just dont. If you have 10 shortsowrds and you like shortswords and lots of materials to burn..then you would be stupid not to do it this way as the damge really is higher by a wide margin.

CLearly, your favouirite weapon should best be taken +15 asnd then use the various resins and buffs to accent the damage..be mindful of the damage scale ratings as some change when you upgrade higher (starts at B for example but can reach S with enough upgrades.) FOr ease of use it is best to have one chaos and one lightnign weoan in reserve...but the rest is unnecessary...even for dedicated magic or faith users as the split damage of magic or faith weapons kills their buzz. THe exception is the moonlight great sword which is100% magic damage. It is the signature sword of FROM software so of course it will be the best in the game in many if not all respects.

Victory achieved. I killed fire with fire. Now with the firefucker out of the way, I'm back at Queelags place. Where to go next? Did I already do what I had to do down there? I guess not? I found a huge door, but it's closed.
You obviously took the stairs up after firefucker and tookthe elefvator back to queelag...it is a useful shortcut but if you would have gone down the stairs instead of up you would continue on your path. You do have the option of giving
queelag's sister
30 humanity to open the door if you wish but it is just a shortcut. If you care to have
solaire
with you till the end then you will want to take the big door route BEFORE registering the welcome to "lost izalith" gong sound and on screen banner, but AFTER speaking with him just outside the centipede battle. After speaking to him DON't go in to lost izalith yet, but rhater go back use the shortcut (big door) and kill all 9 bugs there and soliare will be happy...otherwise you will be forcedto kill him as he goes hollow. Obviously the warping to chaos servant headquarters plus the circle elevator becomes useful going back and forth getting all this done.

Thrakier

Member
I already killed the bugs (seems like I was in front of the door from the other side) but anyway, they'll come back and guess and 30 humanity I don't have. Also, Solaire is more like Meh-laire anyway. I think something may...happen to him. Maybe happend already. *whistling*

I didn't even notice there are stairs to go down. ;D Have to look around again.

What do you all think the best soul farming place is? I've found the crystal golems in the grounds area of the Duke's Archives (right before the Crystal Caverns) to be really easy and relatively quick. I think they give 1200 souls each in NG and there are like 12 or so of them in the area.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Painted World of Ariamis.

You need:
Poison Mist + Pyromancy Flame (any level is fine, Poison Mist doesn't scale)
A Shield
Any kind of weapon

Symbol of Avarice and Covetous Silver Serpent Ring are also good here.

From the bonfire, you go up the stairs and kill the zombie there and enter the courtyard. Approach the statue directly. When you're near the large boxes, begin casting poison mist while you walk toward the clutch of Phalanxes. Your mist should tag all of them, but may miss some in the back. Circle around and mist those too for good measure.

After that, enter the large cylindrical building and climb up the spiral stairs until you reach outside where the undead dragon is/was. Keep climbing the stairs until you can go back inside and the harpies aggro you. If you put up your shield and strafe around them, there's a good chance that they will fall off from the recoil of attacking you. If they try the leap attack, just side step or lure them so they leap to their death. There are a total of 3 harpies that will attack you there although one of them tends to fall down early (the trick here is to walk up the stairs slowly so the second one doesn't fall off). Around this time, the Phalanxes will start dying from the poison.

You can either warp back to the bonfire, drop down carefully to loot their bodies for Souvenirs of Reprisal, or head toward the legs of the Undead Dragon (assuming you killed it). Make it stand up (Forward + R2), then drop down and immediately roll backwards. The Black Knight will "pop in" and start charging toward you. You can handle him one of two ways, either engage him directly (if you have a strong enough weapon and don't mind undead shooting you in the back), or run to the end of the zone where Priscilla is/was. It won't be able to advance past the gate, and you can take your time poking it. It has a very high chance of dropping a Large Titanite Shard as well. Finally, you warp back to the bonfire to start the run again.

Each run will give you about 11k Souls, up to 14k-15k with both the Symbol of Avarice and Covetous Silver Serpent Ring, as well as Souvenirs and a Large Titanite Shard. Takes about 4-5 minutes.

Painted World of Aramis, the blobs give about 15k IIRC; and they die so damn easy.

But without a doubt, the best farming location is the Forest, killing invaders :p. I've killed invaders and recieved tens of thousands of souls, I swear one guy netted me 110k once.

The best way is farming invaders in the forest. Otherwise farming the phalanx in painted world is best.

You could also do co-op boss runs. Probably slower if anything, but definitely way more enjoyable than grinding.

Pandaman

Everything is moe to me
soul level 60, went to the dlc area.

I cant even land a hit on the Sanc. Guardian.

---

andor/princesses chamber is a good farm.

7300 souls for three easy enemies.

Get in close, do as much damage as possible. Dodging is a secondary concern.

I have been trying to fight them close, but they end up swallowing me and spitting me out doing massive damage. Guess I need to be rolling to dodge that?

Damn, I can't believe how much ground I have covered this last week. I think this is my last Lord Soul. I can't think of what else is left to do. I still never found the entrance to the painted world or DLC stuff. (don't tell me tho plz)

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Yeah you should try to dodge that, if only because it's eating up time you could be using for attacks.

Apparently it has a "tell" where they spin around.

Farming invaders requires that you consistently win.

Either lag is too great or I just suck at PvP. I swear I'll have guys warp behind me and pull off a backstab even though I was keeping them in front of me.

Just got to Four Kings. I am scared. Any advice/hints?

I'm not great, but I found the Four Kings to be one of the easiest bosses in the game. I was expecting a lot of death, but I got them on my second try.

The "tell" is pretty simple; if the King raises his arm when he spins around, he's going for a grab (don't start dodging until he's "locked in"). If he hold his sword vertically and then spins, he's going for the magic blast AoE that can be more or less avoided entirely by rolling backwards twice.

Yay! 4 Kings went down pretty fast with some close range pyromancy. I think I was letting the fact that there multiple enemies and insane difficulty I heard from other players cloud my judgement and panic me. Overall not too bad when I stuck close and learned the "tell". I think Bed of Chaos was the one I died most on. Or that shitty centipede thing. ouch!

Traded the last soul to the lordvessel. Wow! This has to be the last area. So epic. Never thought I would ever make it this far. And I have no idea what the DLC stuff even is. Can't wait to find out.

And I am starting to realize that my inventory is an amazing way to find out lore and stuff. It made me read every single description, and I feel the world has been really fleshed out now.

Just got to the Four Kings myself. First time I didn't know about the ring, so those 40k souls will be sorely missed. Next time I fought and died. They don't seem all that much on their own, but by the time there were three I could barely get back up after they hit me.

From the bonfire, run straight down the hallway minding the slimes on the ceiling. There's an opening on your left with a torch hollow. Go that way. Follow that back to the area with the hollows/butchers. You can save the pyro trainer in the barrel if you haven't (he's in the room behind where the butcher drops down). To the left of where the butcher drops down is an area where you can drop down into water. Do that and run up the stairs on the other side of this small area. Now you're in the first room of the depths, and you just have to continue up and out of this room and you'll be in lower undead burg. Straight shoot to firelink from there.

Or go to the shortcut you unlocked towards the gaping dragon, down the stairs, and keep going straight through the bars to reach the door to Blighttown.

Off topic, how come I can't create a thread? Is it because I'm too new of a member or do I have to do something else?

Thought I'd just post here since this is where the vast majority of my neogaf posts have been, so people know me a little bit.

Yeah I think you have to be a member for 6 months or something and have a certain amount of posts.

Beat Sif and then proceeded to get 1 shot by the freaking Moonlight Butterfly.

It's
possible to have them both live past these encounters. The conditions for Siegmeyer are particularly annoying. Something for another playthrough

Yeah I looked it up, and they both seem like the kind of thing that only happen by chance on your first play through. Unless you know what you should do, it's not likely that you'll actually do it that way.

The Moonlight Greatsword can shoot rainbows and bunnies.

And I would never have to kill Sif and I can ride him around Darkroot Garden like the best buddies we are.

I remember a theory about
Solaire
, that said that
the "Sun" he was looking for was really his son. Kind of silly but at the time i was playing it on ps3, fighting him in Demon Ruins/Lost Izalith, had that extra dark spin for it.

What's a good sword/weapon I can pickup for a sorcerer? I've been getting by with just soul arrows and a dagger but I'm just not doing enough damage to Gaping Dragon -- this fight is normally pie but this is my first caster run -- i'm low level and I want to keep it that way. I'm going to have to back out of the depths and find a better weapon (that I can equip).

Might want to try a magic weapon (upgrade at the new londo blacksmith). A longsword has low requirements and is very solid.
