Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition |OT| Durante Does In 23 Minutes What From Can't

I hate you londo. Why must you be so hard to figure out where to go.

You're probably stuck where I was. After you go down that elevator platform, there is a narrow beam you need to walk across to the left but there is no obvious sign that you should be going that way.

Thanks for the advice, I'll check out the Ornstein set. I'm about to fight that boss right now.

EDIT: Oh wow that fight is tough lol
If you have an extra ring slot you can just get the wolf ring, which gives you an instant 40 poise and wear whatever lighter armor you want.

Londo is pretty straight forward, but there are a couple places where you have to be on the lookout for little ramps you can take onto the roof tops.

Its kinda cool how all the shortcuts work too.

How do I equip spells as a wanderer?

After you ring the bell tower, what's next? Go back? It's not very clear.

I almost would have attacked that NPC shows up after if I didn't notice he was unarmed.

I got to the church. The two elevators are not working and the door is locked. I searched everywhere/killed everything/talked to the guy, and I can't quite figure out what I should be doing.

Hmm... This actually sounds like you're in New Londo Ruins?

Completed the game, and overall I actually liked the expansion to the game. Granted, a lot of it was cancelled stuff found in various aspects on the disc of the console version, it's nice to see it realized and introduced in the game. In fact, it has me asking a question I never asked before:
are the Kingseekers the source of Dark? Originally I took the plot of the original game as Fire being for the age of Gods, and Dark being the age of Man, as it was the humanity of Man that was given the Dark Soul. This is further emphasized with the plot details of Kingseeker Kaathe, the optional Kingseeker in the game. But certain plot points in Oolacile have me to believe the Kingseekers released the Dark into the world, and it was they who cause the Four Kings and Artorias to be consumed by Dark. What makes this a little more confusing is Frampt. Seeing as he's a Kingseeker, why does he and only he want to have you relink the Fire? Is it a ruse to keep the cycle of the Undead curse around in the world as the Dark Soul likely comes from them? Either way, it seems the Kingseekers accomplish their goal by plauging the world with Dark in some form, be it pure Dark with no linked Fire, or linked Fire with the curse of the Undead abound in the world. Pretty interesting stuff I'd say.

they're primordial serpents, not kingseekers
kingseeker frampt is a name
darkstalker kaathe is the other

i think the serpents maintain a balance between darkness and light. in this case the age of fire needs to end so the age of dark can begin. kingseeker frampt was suppose to help the other primordial serpents bring the age of dark, but he befriended lord gwyn and thus strayed from his path

i'm not sure how the abyss was caused, just that manus father of the abyss was human

Oh man. Discussing the plot of Dark Souls. This takes me back.

Only one of the primordial serpents is referred to as Kingseeker, and that's Frampt. The other serpent is Darkstalker Kaathe. Frampt wants you to kindle the First Flame and succeed Gwyn to perpetuate the Age of Fire, Kaathe wants you to kill Gwyn and usher in the Age of Dark.

The game's timeline is pretty rough, but the undead curse isn't caused by the First Flame. Gwyn linked the fire about a thousand years before the start of the game, whereas the undead curse only began far more recently.

Kaathe's basically the bad guy. There's a tendency toward viewing the Dark Lord ending as the "good" ending that I've never really understood, because literally every single thing that refers to him even indirectly portrays him as pretty much the most abhorrent and awful dude imaginable. In the new stuff Gough adds to the dogpile by talking some shit about him, too, but then adding that it's really all Oolacile's fault for listening to the guy in the first place. Either way, he's apparently the reason Oolacile went to hell, just like he's the reason New Londo went to hell.

Pretty much the only thing in the game that doesn't consider him to be utterly odious is Kaathe himself, and even he makes no mention of his own merits in favor of talking smack about Gwyn. And all he even says about Gwyn is that he defied nature by kindling the First Flame, which isn't even a valid criticism unless you consider the food chain to be the ultimate arbiter of morality.

So yeah. Kaathe is bad news. Nobody likes that jerk, whereas there are multiple independent characters who think Frampt is just ducky. He's telling you to basically turn yourself into a Yule log for the sake of the world, it's true, but nobody said being the savior of the world was going to be pleasant.

I'm stuck trying to kill these damn gorgoyles... Died about 20x now. I can handle one but then another comes to life. Maybe I should go back and try a different path?

Okay. I fixed my spoiler notice in case.

You are in New Londo Ruins, not Anor Londo. Two different places.

Wow I'm having so much trouble with the Anor Londo bosses
Ornstein and Smough
I want to kill
Ornstein
last, even though thats harder.

Any advice? I'm working on figuring out the fight before I try summoning someone or Solaire.

Maybe you're low level, but the gargoyles are easy when you know what to do. First of all, you'll want to summon Solaire (need to be human) to make it muuuch easier.

Don't try to roll, just block the attacks when they jump or fly and walk to the side otherwise whenever you see that's enough to dodge. If you can kill one before the other one shows up it's very easy. Focus on the first one, don't stop till you kill it.

A crossbow is a very slow but very easy way to take Smough out first. Just keep moving to stay out of Ornstein's range.

But what of Frampt willing to obey you with the Dark Lord ending? And I'm not sure if this is related, but why does Gwyndolin create a mirage of Gwynevere? It might have something to do with Frampt's orders, as he wants you to obtain an item "guarded" by a mirage. Also, what exactly causes the Darksign/Undead/Hollow outbreak? Is it the fading of Fire and Dark having more of a prevalence in the world? To me it seems like there's a lot of deception from both serpents, which is why I suppose many people get different opinions about the endings and the serpents.

I almost would have attacked that NPC shows up after if I didn't notice he was unarmed.

To equip spells rest at a bonfire and choose "Attune Magic" from the menu.

The next destination after the first bell is
the Lower Undead Burg. There's a key on a corpse in front of the church in the Undead Parish that opens the locked door near where you met Solaire. This leads you to the Lower Undead Burg. Killing the boss there will get you the key to the next area, and so on.

You could also
head past Andrei to Darkroot Garden. It's an optional area, but it's got some good stuff tucked away.

Lots of people kill NPCs their first time through. Since I haven't given the standard warning yet in this thread, I'll give it now: if a person is stuck in a barrel, do not free them by hitting the barrel with your weapon. Roll into it instead. This is important.

Today was a good day; there's two less Black Knights (and I have the swords to prove it!), a basement dwelling turtle of an adventurer is no more, and the Capra Demon got a taste of about 15 firebombs.

Long story short?

I'm done for the night. I'm somewhere called Undead Burg I think and it was a rough stretch of struggling with controls and getting killed a lot to get here. I haven't really progressed the game very far but I'm kinda, sorta having fun. I still haven't figured out how to cast my fireball spell which could have helped me kill off some of the archer types. Oh well, I'll keep at it when I get more time to play and figure shit out as I go. Good game, awful port.

Cut their tails if you haven't done so. You should be able to kill the first one before the 2nd arrives, or at least almost immediately afterwards. Upgrade your weapon if you must at the Blacksmith just outside the church if you need more damage.

Are you locking on to every enemy

I should mention that the Crest Shield is absolutely wonderful; I even managed to soak Havel's swings with it, which I was unable to do with any other shield that I've acquired at this point.

You're going to love it even more when you start encountering enemies that use magic. I always have it with me even if it's not my primary shield. It's so practical.

Nah, the lock-on shit makes things worse with KB/M so I don't use it. It's just a really bad implementation of mouse support and twitchy as fuck. It doesn't matter cause I'll beat the game anyway and it'll feel like a nice accomplishment to do it 'handicapped'. *shrug*

You cast spells with an equipped item depending on the type of spell:

Magic Spells - a catalyst
Pyromancy - pyromancy glove
Miracles - talisman

Each of the 3 items are available to starting classes that specialise in their respective magic skill, and all are available to other classes very early in the game - one in a chest/merchant, one by a merchant, one is given by an important and relevant NPC.

Also you have to equip the spell itself to an attunement slot (can be done at any bonfire).

Nope, pretty much everyone using an Xbox 360 controller has mentioned it. The best fix I've heard so far is to click in the left stick to "reset" the positioning, but that's annoying as hell.

What's the problem with the xbox360 controller? I haven't noticed anything in more than 20 hours.

Eh, idk since I haven't tried it but it's safe to say the game is meant to be played with lock-on (aside from a few bosses where it's easier to fight without it). I keep hearing people say things like they're missing swings with the mouse but you're really not meant to manual aim with melee weapons in this game, and some combat functions like ripostes you straight up can't do if you don't lock-on.

My first playthrough on PS3 I had alot of trouble with them but this time I killed them first go, I also one hit that boss on the bridge.. Think has to do with getting the black knights sword and grinding till I was strong enough to wield it

I suppose he got lucky and dropped it from one of the two black knights in the undead burg.

Edit: On an other note, am I the only one that did not get the achievement for "reaching Lordran"? You are supposed to get it right at the beginning of the game but I did not... It's not really a problem because it literally takes 5 minutes to get to this point but still, it's a bit weird.

Both the serpents are disingenuous, it's true. Frampt conveniently omits the fact that kindling the flame means that holy shit you are now on fire forever, after all. But there's not a lot to imply that he's bullshitting you when he tells you that kindling it is a good thing. For everybody but you, I mean.

Gwyn kindled the First Flame some millennium ago, the undead plague started in Balder some century or so ago, though it's been so long since I last had a grand ol' Dark Souls Plot Discussion I'm a little hazy on the exact details. When you fight Gwyn he's all charred and the First Flame is extinguished. The assumption that follows from this is that Gwyn burned for 900 years before he couldn't take it anymore and the flame went out, then with the flame fading people started turning undead. I've always interpreted the Age of Dark as basically being when everybody starts turning undead and, presumably, hollow. Hollows are pretty survival of the fittest types what with their attacking everything and all, and Kaathe is all about the natural course of nature, i.e. everybody killing everybody all the time. And as the top badass that killed the old top badass you're the natural leader of the new world order, you aspiring Illuminati, you.

Anastacia actually explicitly tells you that re-kindling the flame will stop the undead plague. Don't nobody make any such guarantees about letting it go out. Not even Kaathe.

The Gwyndolin thing is pretty straightforward. All the gods save Gwyndolin left Anor Londo for whatever reason. Gwyn's firstborn was banished for being a bit of a gormless churl, hence all the empty dais' in Anor Londo alongside the Gwyn and Gwynevere statues. The rest of the gods left later, with Gwynevere apparently running off and marrying a dude named Flame God Flann.

Gwynever was beautiful and beloved, Gwyndolin was repulsive and frail and apparently nobody even knew he existed. But Gwyndolin was all that was left in terms of a ruler of Anor Londo, seeing as how nobody else seemed to want the job. So he created an illusion of Gwynevere to use as a puppet to rule Anor Londo, and nobody ever had to know that the real ruler of Anor Londo was made out of tentacles and throwing knives.

Way back in the day I compiled a bunch of facts from the game's NPC conversations and item descriptions into a pair of posts here and here. I think it's a decent resource to use for a quick summary of the Dark Souls plotline, but I'm hardly unbiased in the matter.

I was kinda stunned that I not only managed to get the one that's overlooking the Lower Burg, but I also got the Great Sword to drop from the one that's on top of the tower, overlooking the bridge.

Agro'ed him and layed into him with crossbow bolts atop a building he wouldn't climb. Took a while but he dropped it when killed.

Couldn't use it straight away of course so had to grind some levels.

I got him form the same building! I panicked and ran for the ladder after my backstab did next to nothing.

Holy shit! Those inner caves with the humanity ghosts are spooky as hell. I ended up getting up to Manos, but he wrecked me with that grab attack.
