So what does humanity do? What's the difference between be human and being in hollow form? What does kindling flames do? Also one time there was a room with a bonfire, and when I turned around there was some white smog on it that I couldn't pass. Eventually it went away. What gives?
Human form is mostly for pvp / coop: In human forms other players form around your level can invade you. A bit further into the game you get the ability to summon other players / NPC characters at certain spots; You need to be human for that as well. Supposedly it also makes droprates slightly higher.
Kindling flames increases the amount of estus flasks you get from the bonfire by five.
Not sure about the white fog; you should always be able to pass through it. Usually it's sort of a warning about something dangerous nearby.
Where do I find the ability to summon phantoms into my game?
People willput down their summon signs typically around a boss area. The area boss has to still be alive and you need to be in human form.

Is there an item I need before doing this?
Don't ask for help unless you've exhausted all other options. It's more fun that way.
Yes,Is there an item I need before doing this?
DON'T PUNCH ANY MERCHANTS.
You guys just need to be honest with yourselves and admit that you have violent tendencies towards poor NPCs.
I killed every npc in the game on one of my playthroughs
Made me feel pretty guilty![]()
I have all these items that I don't need. Can I sell them?
Don't put your controller down on your lap infront of a merchant if you're using a dualshock 3, thanks shoulder buttons

In the intro area, related to the NPC-knight:Is there a penalty for killing him?

The alternatives would be toEventually yes, although you only get pennies on the dollar.stash them at bonfires, or in your backpack (if i recall correctly, non-equipped items don't count towards the encumbrance limit).
Well, I'm doing it just to avoid mistakes like, say, putting points to Resistance as you folks consider it as useless (thanks for that). It's not like the game allow you to re-arrange allocated stat points, right? Or am I mistaken here?
So small mistakes like that here and there can be brutal, yeah?
Seriously, fuck this game already.
Still can't get past that first fucking boss, the jump attack simply doesn't work any more. Worked the first time I did it, killed him with ease. Now I've tried it 9(!!) times with the same outcome, fall down and he hits you a few times without being able to move, dead. Even managed to jump down on him while holding attack but then my character just slides off his body and down to the floor.

What class?
The Asylum Demon
when you jump you dont have to keep push the attack button, just one hit in mid-air is enough. after this, 2 or 3 swing and then parry/dodge is attack, is pretty easily when you know how he attack

Ah for fuck sake peopleI know the tactics, I know the pattern, I ALREADY DEFEATED HIM ONCE, it's just now the plunge attack doesn't trigger and the SECOND I hit the floor without it he smashes me straight away twice and I'm dead. I can't even get in combat with the guy

Did yougo through the big door by the bonfire as suggested so you don't need to hit the floor...?
No because it says something about a contraption blocking the door, I can't get through.
Some of these questions aren't spoilery at all, they seem like basic game mechanic questions that should be in the OP - i.e. what's the difference between human and hollow forms, what does humanity do, what is the fog that blocks off areas sometimes - this is basic need to know stuff and not spoilers at all IMO. A little FAQ in the OP covering these basics would be good.
I mean the door that is by the bonfire in the courtyard, not the door that automatically closes after you leave where the Asylum Demon is.

I can't speak for anybody else of course, but to me, Dark Souls is a game best played when you literally don't know anything upon starting to play, including the "basic game mechanic". By not knowing these, and going in blind, you are able to achieve a greater sense of exploration, as you slowly uncover the various mechanics through consistent trial and error. By not having any knowledge other than what is supplied literally within the game, you retain the sense of vulnerability that is almost certainly intended when playing the game the first time. This intention is derived by the lack of the game mechanics actually being explained within the game, being left to you to uncover on your own.
