Dark Souls Spoiler-Free Hint Thread

Anyone have any tips on
how to defeat the Capra Demon? Having a really hard time with him and not sure what to do. He is killing me within seconds everytime I go through the fog.

Any help most appreciated!

That's the
boss with the dogs right? I just ran up the stairs and it couldn't hit me there

So what does humanity do? What's the difference between be human and being in hollow form? What does kindling flames do? Also one time there was a room with a bonfire, and when I turned around there was some white smog on it that I couldn't pass. Eventually it went away. What gives?

Human form is mostly for pvp / coop: In human forms other players form around your level can invade you. A bit further into the game you get the ability to summon other players / NPC characters at certain spots; You need to be human for that as well. Supposedly it also makes droprates slightly higher.

Kindling flames increases the amount of estus flasks you get from the bonfire by five.

Not sure about the white fog; you should always be able to pass through it. Usually it's sort of a warning about something dangerous nearby.

I wouldn't say either game is hard per se, they just require patience and understanding of the mechanics.

not completely true, be human trigger some NPC invasion event who reward you with weapon, soul and armor

DON'T PUNCH ANY MERCHANTS.

Don't put your controller down on your lap infront of a merchant if you're using a dualshock 3, thanks shoulder buttons

I killed every npc in the game on one of my playthroughs

Made me feel pretty guilty :(

I once started a new character in Demon's and killed everyone in the Nexus for kicks.

It became so quiet and empty that it just felt disturbing. Didn't end up playing with that char.

I have all these items that I don't need. Can I sell them?
Eventually yes, although you only get pennies on the dollar.
The alternatives would be to
stash them at bonfires, or in your backpack (if i recall correctly, non-equipped items don't count towards the encumbrance limit).

Don't ask for help unless you've exhausted all other options. It's more fun that way.

Well, I'm doing it just to avoid mistakes like, say, putting points to Resistance as you folks consider it as useless (thanks for that). It's not like the game allow you to re-arrange allocated stat points, right? Or am I mistaken here?

So small mistakes like that here and there can be brutal, yeah?

Nice, thanks.

You (only the answer to the question)
cannot revert changes to your stats (unless this has been added in the new areas which I highly doubt)
.

Regarding small mistakes when creating builds
small mistakes aren't too bad, and there is such a huge amount of potential builds that tiny mistakes aren't too bad (but you still should think carefully about when you level up), it's only if you do something like put 10+ extra points in Resistance that you have a problem. It's worth noting however that for offline, builds are not too significant. You can get through the game offline at any level. It's only online where they begin to really matter.

Seriously, fuck this game already.

Still can't get past that first fucking boss,
the jump attack simply doesn't work any more. Worked the first time I did it, killed him with ease. Now I've tried it 9(!!) times with the same outcome, fall down and he hits you a few times without being able to move, dead. Even managed to jump down on him while holding attack but then my character just slides off his body and down to the floor.

You mean the Taurus or the Asylum deamon?

First boss related:
Are you absolutely certain you're doing the fall attack correctly? First, make it so that you are certain he is at the bottom of the tower, looking up. When this is done, run off the edge and press (don't hold) the attack button once (I guess you could keep pressing it if you want but it shouldn't be necessary). The animation should change and you inflict about 368 (or more) damage to him.

If you are doing that correctly, don't worry. He isn't too difficult to fight face to face anyway. You can go in the door normally from the bonfire in the Asylum to avoid the fall damage too. Most of his attacks are relatively slow and have fairly large lead time, allowing you to prepare to roll right through them. You can continue to strafe around his back to attack him or you can run to him so that he does his "fly-sit" area attack, run away, circle him, get an attack in and then repeat if you're having too much difficult with fighting him normally.

when you jump you dont have to keep push the attack button, just one hit in mid-air is enough. after this, 2 or 3 swing and then parry/dodge is attack, is pretty easily when you know how he attack

Yes and that's what I've been doing and it is not fucking happening, same as I did on my first tryout character ( Also a knight ) and then it worked fine. Now it just doesn't work.

Do you have (stat related)
all the equipment you get equiped? If so, try removing some and experimenting. At a certain point, you may notice that you become more preficient at dodging. In addition, you can use the sword two handed for more damage, I don't know what button this is on the keyboard, but it's Triangle/Y on the PS3/360.

the one thing I wish someone had told me sooner when I started playing this game?

No plot spoiler, control-related slight spoiler

learn how to control your stamina bar

Seriously, fuck this game already.

Still can't get past that first fucking boss
- Learn his attack patterns
- Don't stay in front of him, instead get close and circle him (for melee classes, of course)
- Use rolling to escape from attacks at the last moment (it gives you a brief moment of invincibility, it's critical to get used to this)

I don't consider any of this a spoiler. These are general tactics for many bosses.

Ah for fuck sake people
I know the tactics, I know the pattern, I ALREADY DEFEATED HIM ONCE, it's just now the plunge attack doesn't trigger and the SECOND I hit the floor without it he smashes me straight away twice and I'm dead. I can't even get in combat with the guy

Did you
go through the big door by the bonfire as suggested so you don't need to hit the floor...?

try this, dont do the air attack but jump on the right or left and, before hit the floor, hit the roll button. You will be able to take lesser damage and roll out the boss

Some of these questions aren't spoilery at all, they seem like basic game mechanic questions that should be in the OP - i.e. what's the difference between human and hollow forms, what does humanity do, what is the fog that blocks off areas sometimes - this is basic need to know stuff and not spoilers at all IMO. A little FAQ in the OP covering these basics would be good.

No because it says something about a contraption blocking the door, I can't get through.

I mean the door that is by the bonfire in the courtyard, not the door that automatically closes after you leave where the Asylum Demon is.

I can't speak for anybody else of course, but to me, Dark Souls is a game best played when you literally don't know anything upon starting to play, including the "basic game mechanic". By not knowing these, and going in blind, you are able to achieve a greater sense of exploration, as you slowly uncover the various mechanics through consistent trial and error. By not having any knowledge other than what is supplied literally within the game, you retain the sense of vulnerability that is almost certainly intended when playing the game the first time. This intention is derived by the lack of the game mechanics actually being explained within the game, being left to you to uncover on your own.

I feel like that stuff belongs in the OT OP more than here. This isn't really supposed to be a newbie guide thread, and I didn't have any intention of doing an elaborate OP. I guess I could link the wiki though (edit: done).

Well the character you build is up to you, there are no real "mistakes" in this department, you'll come across opportunities to (fairly easily) grind Souls as you progress to level up with.

As for Resistance specifically, you'll be thanking yourself for a fairly high level of it in certain sections, though there are always items that can offset any shortcomings in your characters abilities.

This is exactly what I've been trying to say but failed to express. Thanks. This is also why I'd like people to be really strict with spoiler tags (although I can already see that's not going to happen). For example, I didn't want to know about Resistance being useless or the general attack pattern you should use on most bosses. But now I do anyway. I guess I'll have to stay out of this thread as well until I'm well into the game.
