Dark Souls Spoiler-Free Hint Thread

... That's also the one I'm talking about.

Ok, I apologise profusely for misunderstanding. I had
confused the NG run with the NG+ run. What you should do in this case is to proceed as normal onto the ledge. However, roll to the side, do not go forward. The Asylum Demon should not have enough time to attack you before you recover, at which point you can roll away, drink an Estus to recover the fall damage and you can fight as normal.
Hopefully that works.

You don't need a spoiler tag but fuck dark souls. Seriously, I played that game for 20 hrs (exaggerating) and you wanna know how far I got....barley passed Tarus. To all new players, save yourselves, if you play this game you will pop blood vessels. Stick to demon souls, wayyyy easier.

Do weapons and shields take damage?

Most items have durability so yes. Very good idea to keep Repair Powder on you at all times, because having your weapon/shield break at an inopportune time is not fun.

Edit: Didn't think this was really a spoiler, but I guess I'll spoiler tag it just in case.

Are the best builds in the game all high damage power weapon-wielders? Seems like every invader I've dealt with is sporting a gigantic fucking weapon of some sort. It kind of worries me because I'm building a sorcerer. I don't care to pvp but I want to be able to not be slaughtered by invaders.

No, not necessarily.
It depends entirely on the weapon. Most large heavy weapons are too slow and demanding to be of competition and one set of stat scaling items aren't actually that useful (not going to say which). The Zweihander is an exception to this which is a very large greatsword, its power depending entirely on the build but in general it can be made so that any build can use it. However, may smaller weapons such as katanas (not going to be specific) and normal swords are perfectly fine when used with a magic buff.

As a spell based user, I highly advise you get used to the melee combat as even with a mage, melee combat (boosted massively by magic spells) have the highest likelihood of dealing high damage and spells in most cases are very inefficient for PvP.

Hm how does the estus flask mechanic work? And is there a penalty for using bonfires besides enemies respawning? Like do I have to buy flints or something to be able to use them?

Also, something tells me I wasted 3k souls by purchasing that repair box that's used at bonfires. Guessing it's a single use thing T_T

Whenever there is a message that says "try jumping", do it. It's 100% guaranteed to be for a good reason.

The repair box isn't a single use thing, once you got that you'll always get a repair option at bonfires.

The bonfires always fill up your estus flasks. Normally to five, but you can up this for bonfires by kindling them. Keep in mind that this only works for the specific bonfire that you kindle and all other bonfires will stay at 5.

There's no other penalties for bonfires btw.

You can consider the bonfires as a reusable checkpoint. If you're out of estus, you can just go back to the bonfire and use it in hopes that your next run at the stage will be better.

The repair box is a very good purchase.
Although you could have saved 1000 souls by waiting a bit longer to buy it at another NPC

Wrong. I'm playing this game on 360 as a mage, finished the third run 2 days ago and my PVP ratio win is to 70-80%. The only problem with PVP as a mage is the initial level, when you get horning missile and soul spear it's cake.

Can anyone help me beat a boss?

Finding it impossible to beat the Capra Demon. I'm level 21, playing on PS3. Help would be most appreciated

Can anyone help me beat a boss?

*This boss is early on in the game, without the Master Key it will likely be the third or fourth boss you fight after leaving the tutorial area*

Finding it impossible to beat the Capra Demon. I'm level 21, playing on PS3. Help would be most appreciated

I could try help you but the only way I'd be able to get there quick enough is by
transferring all my items to a new character which would break the fight.

If you're having trouble but don't mind going solo (which I really recommend):
When you go in start running to the steps and as the Capra Demon lunges at you, dive forward (you NEED the fast roll) to dodge the attack. From the stairs, kill the dogs and from there it's a pretty simple (in theory anyway) fight.

Stuck on a boss in the first area and feel I've dug my own grave...

I'm at the gargoyle boss; I can't get a poke in without getting hit by his ax, so I end up dying pretty quickly.

I cannot summon anyone to my world, due to not having any more Humanity available to me. I only just leaned how to summon people to my world as well, so it seems I was wasting a bunch of Humanity.

I rolled a thief and am level 20 at the moment. Prioritizing DEX and END with a bit of STR and VIT.

Different kind of question: I've played through Darks Souls twice (once on NG+) but I want to start a new build for the eventual release of the DLC.

What stat(s) should I focus on for my replay so I'm ready to use new things? I don't want to spoil the new content for myself months ahead of release, but I just want to know if it would be helpful to arrive in the new area with high INT or DEX or whatever.

Plus if there are any specific items I should have for new areas I'd appreciate the hint...

Use Roll to avoid most of its attack while also utilizing the height level on the roof you are fighting on. His attack which he goes into the flies into the air is a vertical attack, easily dodge with rolling to the side.

Lay down a summon mark in front of the boss door. Get practice + humanity. Come back as human + summon pc +

I'm lost after beating what I think is the 3rd boss
the big boar that dies by fire
.

I passed the dragon, then killed the armored boar, and found the following key

Mystery Key
Description: Resembles a basic prison cell key

Then I have nowhere to go.

I even tried going way back see if I was done with this area, but it seems not as the monsters are still way too hard for my level.

You should be able to progress in the area where you beat the
boar. Look for some stairs going down into the building.

If you want to go in blind, and I do mean BLIND, you wouldn't know that stuff, would you? This thread is for everyone who has a question to ask, even the most hardcore of hardcore "I don't want ANY info" people. My goal is for people to be able to go in here, scroll through, find any info they're looking for/ask a question without getting any additional info they weren't looking for. You can always highlight a spoiler, but you can never un-know something you read. And come on, adding the tags isn't THAT annoying :)
Yeah I appreciate the presence of this thread.

I had a major issues when I first started out in DA:O for example, with not being able to do anything about the locked chests and failing most of the conversation "persuasion checks", and ended up having to restart the game multiple times to try to find a workable build. If someone had just told me to a) put points into "coercion" early on, and b) download the lock bash mod, then I would have had a much more enjoyable intro to the game, without wasting 10 hours on restarts.

So I got pretty far, and thought that I could take on any challenge the game would toss at me.

But then
Dragon Slayer Ornstein & Executioner Smough
happened. How the hell am I supposed to go about beating those?

They wont let me breath a single second and will relentlessly attack no matter what. I tried to hide behind pillars, but it can only go so far. I try to focus either the little one or the big one, but it always ends badly because sooner or later I get flanked hardcore by the other.

I'm a warrior, I don't practice any magic stuff, I tried to tackle the fight with the Dark Knight sword, then switched for the Giant Halberd to be faster, but no matter how fast I can get, it's impossible as all fuck.

What should I do?

That's highly arguable. I honestly would be hard pressed to say which of the two i feel is the more difficult game. If anything, the consensus is probably that dark souls actually is easier, due to the network of bond-fires. Difficulty of bosses is subjective and depends on your build to a large extent. Personally, I don't recall anything in dark souls that put up as much of a fight as
man eater
for example (although
capra demon
came close). If you had no problem with demons souls, i wouldn't expect you to have too much trouble making progress in dark souls. What was the exact problem you were having?

man eater
is where I stopped playing Demon's Souls.

This is the boss two areas after ringing both bells in case anybody else is unsure whether or not to highlight it.

The best tactic, if you have it, that I've found, is (regarding the weapon to use)
the Lightning Zweihander. This weapon's extremely powerful R2 attack will stun either enemy. Now, for your first play through you should kill Smough first and the second half of the fight will be very difficult with a Lightning Zweihander if you do this, because
(regarding the boss's resistance)
Ornestein is highly resistant to lightning weapons. It will still be possible of course, and this is the easiest way as far as I'm concerned because you can trap them in the stun animation, unable to attack, but if you're confident it may be faster to use another weapon.

Another thing you could try do before the battle (quite vague, spoils little)
Solaire before the battle if you are in human form
. That makes the fight easier.

At all times you should (general tactics)
have both in your sight at the same time. Smough is quite easy to dodge if you stay close (or at least, this is what I find) but Ornestein can be very, very difficult (and I would always recommend killing him second on your first playthrough). While there is two of them, go close to Smough and maneouver so that Ornestein is roughly behind him (in your view anyway) and hopefully you can go near a pillar too, so you've more seperating the extra boss from you.
.

Hope that helps, maybe somebody else can add to this.

About humanity:

If you leave a message on the ground saying: "Need humanity", and someone gives it a rating of +1, you get a free humanity.

I have tried to create a dex build in the PS3 version and it proved to be totally unfeasible. Shitty armor for mobility and no decent dex weapons for a long time. I went up do Anor Londo and stopped playing at some point.

I will start from scratch for the PC version. Any tips on fun builds?

There are several solid early DEX weapons, and you can get armor like the Crimson Set at the start of the game if you want high mobility and good resistances.

Just some general questions:

Is there anything in the game like the boss souls from Demon Souls that I should hold onto and not expend?

I ran into the skeletons in the graveyard and am I missing some sort of weapon to deal with them or in the beginning is it just a battle of attrition?

Should I be conservative with humanity or use it when I can? There's no benefit to being human other than pvp or co-op right?

I really really really appreciate this thread guys!

So for the very first boss, on a New Game.....is it possible to do the jump attack down onto him, or do I have to fight him face to face? I too have been getting smashed over and over after he jumps up and smashes the ledge. Also, I'm assuming it is possible to make a very high dex knight?

1st:
A good chunk of bosses drop Boss Souls that you need in order to make unique weapons. You can consume them for additional souls, but it's definitely not worth it.

2nd:
The skeletons guard an area called the Catacombs, which is definitely not recommended for new players, as the skeletons there not only are fairly strong but also respawn indefinitely. Beating the boss in that area gives you a nice item, but you don't need to get to this area till much later in the game. Don't come back against the skeletons till you have leveled up a bit.

3rd:
Some weapons are stronger when you have high humanity, and it also increases your poison and curse resistance, as well as the drop rate of certain items. That said, you lose humanity the same way you lose souls, so don't use too much of it until you have ways to recover it easily.

You can only do the jumping attack once, but he should be easy with whatever weapon (a club?) you get.

And yeah, your starting class doesn't determine at all how you distribute your later stats.

Thanks Anti! I played a bit of Demon's Souls a couple years ago, but was waiting on this port. I have a feeling I will be using this thread quite a bit, good idea, OP!

The best build in the game is the one where you use a weapon where you (as a player) can land damage without getting hit (you know how to use the weapon without getting retaliated). Basically use whatever you like best as a weapon type.

Thanks a lot!

In regards to humanity:
So for the humanity it's something that needs to be consumed to have its effects on weapons? Is it a stat in general or does humanity have to be tied to a specific weapon that you choose?

Thanks a lot!

Yes,
only the humanity that is on the left of your HP and stamina actually counts. Not the one in your inventory. It's not tied to a weapon or anything, as long as you have that humanity, all I said applies.

Thanks a lot!

Humanity
is like souls. The amount of humanity you have is shown in the circle beside your life and stamina bar. Humanity doesn't effect all weapons, only a specific type of weapon is affected by your number of humanity. Humanity is also technically a stat (as a result, the weapons that are affected by humanity will all be influenced by your humanity, not just a single weapon of your choosing) , but it can be increased and lost by collecting humanity and is, as such, fundamentally different from other stats.

Should I be dumping my unused weapons and gear into the holding box and garbage? Basically, is all that extra crap I'm Holding physically encumberring me?

Should I be dumping my unused weapons and gear into the holding box and garbage? Basically, is all that extra crap I'm Holding physically encumberring me?

Answer:
No, it is not encumbering you at all. Unlike Demon's Souls there is no carry limit in Dark Souls, only an equip limit. However, it is highly advisable to move everything into the Bottomless Box as it saves you time scrolling through the menus. This allows you to quickly switch between the items you use (armour, weapons, shields etc.), even if you're in the middle of a battle.

My advice to new players is to stop worrying about "perfect builds" and just play the game.

Experiment with all the different weapons you find and use what you like regardless of your stats. Points in dex and strength make alot less difference than you realise, upgrading is far more important. If you have enough points to wield the weapon you can use it effectively in PVE or even PVP combat.

I think if you play like this you will get alot more enjoyment from the game.
If you compulsively worry about putting points into the wrong stat you wont have much fun.

Hey this thread is amazing and just what I'm looking for.

I started a Cleric and am up to level 23 or so right now. I've explored about and am not sure where to go next.

I am currently back at the
Firelink Shrine

I have
Rang the first bell.

After that I returned to try and progress further, but I am not sure where to go. I have dipped my toes into
New Londo Ruins, Catacombs, and Darkroot Garden.

I have not found or fought the
Capra Demon.

Thought that
New Londo Ruins was the way to go and was dealing with the ghosts thanks to having some Transient Curse, then I died and had no Transient Curse left...
The couple of vendors I have found do not sell it either, so that seems like a dead end.

I have checked the wiki sparingly as I really want to have as pure an experience of the game as possible, but I feel stuck now. Any ideas for me?

Thanks! I kinda figured as much, because I wasn't being reduced to a crawl although I was carrying all kinds of stuff. And yeah, Going from Pyromancy Flame, to spear, and then having to fumble around for an axe past broken swords and other crap definitely got me killed the other day.

What does feeding stuff to the green snake guy in Firelink do? I am afraid to give it stuff without having any idea of it's rewards.

And I really like this thread. I am playing again on PC after only making it 60% through the PS3 version. But even then I don't want any advice. I just want to explore the game without expectations of how to do things "right.

Answer to spoiler tagged question which is something that occurs after ringing the two bells:
Feeding Frampt allows you to "sell" items for souls. Personally, I do not think the amount of souls you get for the items are worth it in almost any case and I've never actually done it as a result. Afterall, souls are plentiful but unique items are not. If you feed Frampt Slabs, Chunks or Large Shards, Frampt breaks them down into smaller items (e.g. Feed titanite slabs, receive titanite chunks). Normal shards can then be fed for souls (I'm almost certain of this but not 100% simply because I've never actually used it so I'm only vaguely recalling what I've read in the past).
