Dave Perry's crowning achievement...

Cool Spot was a great one. I remember renting it back then and I was shocked at how much I liked it. I was totally not expecting that kind of license to amount to anything. It is funny how great the music is on that game, the rave dance tune is phenomenal. I've listened to the tunes on the SNES and even the Amiga version, and the Genny still comes out on top. Though the Amiga one does have some real instrument sounds, most of the tunes are not as full as the Genny version. The SNES version did have a few extra graphical features, for instance the balloons were a transparent color while they were just solids on the Genny. And I remember the spotlight effect on the wall level, though I thought that was kind of unnecessary.

I know people usually talk about Dave Perry's Aladdin and while credit is due over the good use of the license, I had never quite liked the gameplay after the first levels.

The biggest thing with Aladdin I think was simply the animation. So many games were still using the missing frames type of animation that something as fluid as Aladdin was a big draw. That, and the rest of the graphics were still of high quality too. Just lots of overall polish in that game is what helps it overcome some of its weaker gaming points.

Didn't EGM recently call Bubsy one of the worst games of all time?

Did they? The first Bubsy game was very good. It was the best game in the series, after which it quickly went downhill from there.

:lol at the Bubsy love. Didn't EGM recently call Bubsy one of the worst games of all time?

You're think of Bubsy 3D for the PSX, which was absolutley atrocious. The 16-bit Bubsy's were actually respectable games. If memory serves me correctly, the controls took a little time to get used to because BUbsy's standard jump propelled him the height of the screen, but everything else was pretty solid.

I loved Cool Spot. It looked great, and the game was just fun. Even so, I don't know if I would even give a game like that a chance today. I'd probably look at it in disgust.

OMG! Advertising! EVIL!

Darn hippy liberal anti-commercialism getting to me...

Yeah, Cool Spot was a masterpiece. I remember playing it plenty on my Genny. The toyland level w/train was a bitch.

I love the train level, especially with that the Maginificent Seven tune. I also loved the kiddy pool level as well. It's a pity both levels didn't have more acts (even though they're kind of similar to each other).

The port and toyland levels were bad levels to repeat, IMHO.

The second one was horrible, a real headache

No, they insulted the original (I think in some classic console roundup they listed it as among the Genny's worst games). Bubsy 3D was one of the worst games of all time -- so bad it tarred its forebears with the suck brush. "More like a bridge too short" :lol

I picked up the original as one of my first five Genesis games (along with, IIRC, Subterranea and Mega Turrican) and it's never left my collection.

Cool Spot is awesome, but it isn't Shinys best achievement. This is:

The coolest hybrid action/RTS created! :D

IAWTP and I'd also put MDK in as a close second. Both are great games that I still enjoy playing now and then.
