DayZ - zombie apocalypse online FFA permadeath survival Arma II mod

Err, no I actually meant how ARMA II is such a huge game thanks to all the mods people release. :p Not sure what you meant!

If you count just missions and not big mods like ACE, CWR, and DayZ, the game still has dozens of hours of content.

I've put in over 120 hours into ArmA II and I've yet to finish the 5 official campaigns. Compound all the downloadable missions and mods that change the entire game and you have one massive title.

nice :)

Need a better PC for this. Will keep reading and watching streams. Loved "World War Z" (Book) and this seems to have this vibe.

Have those of you who've been playing before this went viral, have you noticed that the influx of new players has ruined or negatively impacted your experience?

Negatively, to be honest. It used to be quieter and people would conduct themselves like grown ass people - now it's like a mentally challenged hybrid baby with Youtube comments as the sire and 4chan as the incubator.

Somewhat.

There is a lot more PKers and the chat is usually an argument between Reddit and 4chan.

Lol that policy sounds a bit off to me haha

Generally yes, but from what I gather this is a shoot first ask questions later type of game. Not sure I would trust any randoms enough to team up with them for long periods of time. My friend used to get in good with people in Diablo 2 and then loot all their stuff when they would do an item transfer lol.

Nor should you - what's sad is that people who you could help usually are your own downfall, either by them being stupid and firing an Enfield in the air, or whatnot. It's tough to live alone, but it's also probably the best idea.

I'm sure the idiots with short attention spans won't last long. I, it seems, won't even be able to BEGIN for a month or so. Having tried for three days, and isolated it to a VPN issue, I can't seem to get around it in other ways so I'm done for realzy real. I'll keep reading this thread and hope that it gets sustained into the summer. If we buy a NeoGAF server, for god's sake turn BattlEye off!

Do you stay on direct chat to see that? I always just switch to global chat and leave it there. If you switch to global chat do you still see direct chat?

Also, the car story is great, like in Pirates of the Caribbean when the pirate ship got stolen. "They're stealing our ship! Bloody pirates!"

A LOT more negative. Chat used to be full of people mostly role playing or being helpful/communicative or robbing people. Now, as someone said earlier, it's mostly a mix of 4Chan and youtube comments. Also, most people used to be aware of the ArmA code of conduct, like not using the global or side channel for voice chat (use direct channel). Now you just have people voice chatting and yelling/playing music/being assholes.

It's just one of the problems with this game attracting a larger audience. Luckily, a lot of assholes from 4chan and elsewhere probably won't stick with this game considering how clunky ArmA is and how high the system requirements are. I figure there will be an influx of people and dicks as they want to see what all the fuss is about, they'll be filtered out and quit playing for various reasons, and things will go back to normal. I think right now there's a large 4chan influx to grief people, they'll get sick of it soon.

didn't end great...I am shit with a m/kb and I quickly drove it into a wall and got shot.

Crumbs and I had a fucking amazing adventure today. Loved it.

Brilliant introduction to the game, we covered so many miles

Red dots are where I spawned, blue dots are where we finally met up, and the red crosses are where I died :(

I can't wait to play more.

What's the difference between global chat, and direct chat? What's side channel (direct?)
Global - Speaks to everyone, if playing PVP, you will broadcast to the enemy as well as your own side.
Side - Broadcasts to everyone who is the same faction as you.
Group - Broadcasts to just the people in your unit, AKA the ones with the diamonds. (Coop play, groups don't work right now with DayZ)
Direct - This broadcasts to everyone within a listenable radius of your in-game player. Think of it not as a radio channel, but like talking to someone in real life. Anyone within range can hear you, audio gets quieter/louder depending on the distance you are from the person using direct channel and text will just not show up once you're beyond a certain distance from the person typing. In DayZ, any time you hear someone use direct voice or text, drop to the ground and be cautious, especially if they sound hostile, because it means they are near you.

Side channel is generally regarded as the channel to use, as opposed to global. Direct is the best to use to keep a low profile., as you'll only broadcast text chat to people in your location.

Last night I awoke to an empty forest. Fellow gaffers far in the north, and back in Cherno. Sheets of rain obscured man, beast, and the dead. Awaiting the return of the expedition from the city. Keeping dry under bushes. I settle in. Watching the city of the dead. Ghastly figures shamble through the rain.

isuLiH8WJ2Sa6.bmp

For my ending the life of a bandit who preyed upon the living last night, I have gained humanity.

The expedition is surrounded in the city. Nix is desperately injured. Saved from death by MOB. Another gaffer perishes. Trapped in a hospital. After fending off the dead, they resupply and creep from the city. Flares are thrown. More GAFFERS assemble. Six in total. Nix leading. Mob making sure no one is lost to the night. Me, our map guide.

is6z6zsxVcxoV.bmp

Krappadizzle had perished earlier. Now returned, we raid a farm house. Three wait outside while we clear the zombies from the barn. I watch the door. But one zombie is ignored and wails against the night. No deep breaths for this killing. Three shots return the dead to rest. Supplies, weapons.

We return to our run. The zombies in the land dwindle in number. Have we outlived the plague?

ilgVwglzUJR6Y.bmp

Finding a dam, we attempt to get our fill of water. No luck. MOB barely escapes the currents with his life, left now with but a pistol.

We are reunited with docbon! Joyful is the moment of reunification. We pledge to join with yet more gaffers at the region's main airfield. No walkers meet us as we refill on water.

Doc leads us north. Nix admires his athletic ability. We try to stem complacency. The airfield! Laid out before us. I sneak into a watchtower. Survey our situation. No movement. But.....a man, in a watchtower?!

ibF8LqDQCc416.bmp

Nay, but a lamp of the night. We continue our march to the hangers. A goat is spotted on the runway. Fresh meat would be grand. Campfire, warmth.

Spotted! No wails, but a man running. He disappears into woods. We circle the woods, descend upon the airfield. Dead bodies, evidence of a raid by fellow GAFFERs. Doorways, barriers prove near fatal in this land of creeping death. Bandages and blood transfusions are given.

We move on, once more to the wilderness. And another day of survival.

Works out of the box with the 360 controller, just need to enable it - Even get some basic icon overlays. However, they still haven't implemented proper invert which is a bummer for us Inverters.

Reporting back, changing player profile DOES NOT create a new character.
Does this mean if you get turned into a boar by the helicopter bug you're stuck forever, or just until respawn?

Is there any way to start a new char, I lost a lot of blood and my vision is permanently blurry. Plus I have played several hours and not run into a single person.

That's good that it works. Sucks about the inverting since I do.

Correct. Your selection of chat channel only effects the channel you broadcast on. You'll still receive all chat sent by others via the other channels.

You can basically use anything with Arma 2, the base game is a military sim after all. So you can totally have a racing wheel bound to cars and a joystick and pedals for choppers and planes. The game also has amazing head tracking features, not just turning your head but all possible dimensions (head pitch, yaw, turn, leaning around corners, zooming in, zooming out, etc).

I should totally give this a go with my headtracking stuff, last time I tried it got a little confusing since you'll be controlling your weapon separately.

Can't you just reverse the binds for the look up and look down? don't remember if it's forcing you to bind those two to one axis of movement.

I think you can get around that by just inverting the mouse in-game.

I just didn't like that option as I was using the 360 controller on / off, bit of driving and just messing around with some flying then switching to keyboard when done - Then having an inverted mouse isn't cool. If you're going controller exclusively, it should be possible.

I still don't know the answer to stuff like Rocket corrupting characters for hackers, but for a normal character you can restart by doing something like:

1. Hit escape
2. Press respawn
3. Wait for death screen
4. Hit escape
5. Click aboart
6. Click disconnect (which will not actually disconnect you from the server I think)
7. Click OK (or whatever button is in the bottom right to create a new character)

I tried the 360 controller with OA but the config was poor, some problem with the triggers been one axis or something like that... so i wasnt able to fire with the right trigger while aiming with the left one.

I think it stayed the same, really. See, that's the beauty of the game. You can't trust anybody. That was the same concept before and after it went viral IMO. Honestly, the rule and the feel of the game hasnt changed. You're still alone in a post apacolyptic huge ass world bent on test, tension, mistrust, and survival at the forefront. Throw in a load of people that may or may not be your enemy, and the game sends its message perfectly. It's the "unknowns" that make this so special.

Oh damn. That's actually pretty awesome about the wheel and stuff. I'll have to check that out once I get home from work. I'm actually kind of excited to try out Arma as well.

I don't think people are complaining about more unknown players, I think people are complaining about a combination of people killing any survivor on sight (basically deatchmatch, enhanced by a 4chan affinity for griefing or whatnot), with people spamming chat with 4chan/reddit/youtube memes.

And also apparently screaming into the global voice chat and playing music, though I haven't run into that yet. Is there a way to disable incoming voice chat?

Did you guys log off by the airfield? Gib and I logged off near there last night, in the woods, but inside the gates.

PM'ed!

Nix, if you should see this, got a time in mind for your using us as guinea pigs for the stream? No work tonight for me.

Mine's possibly one iteration newer than yours: 3.2Ghz, HD 5670 512MB, and I can run it on 30-40ps at 1080p with EVERYTHING on low. You might not be so lucky, but it might be worth a shot?

Man, I wish they used Celle 2 instead, it's the perfect zombie atmosphere map - highways, great layout, lots of good forests and little towns plus its size is much better.

Check that highway action, now imagine zombies, more gloomy atmosphere and tons of abandoned cars.

A US setting might be interesting some time in the future. Much larger cities, highway systems, different cultural attitudes on weapons and the diversity available. Something for beta or a finished game. Some day.

Sounds pretty iffy, though I'm guessing you'd get back a lot of those settings settling for 720p and 30fps right?

I'm not really sure; as mentioned I was trying to play a second character. If you're stuck and you can't move, just Respawn via the menu and restart. That should do it (though it inevitably sucks.)

Your still at the airfield right? I know all 8 of us logged off there.

Yes I am, I wanted to see if I could create a new player profile and play a different character. But once I logged on and realized where I was, I disconnected. So I'm still in the spot; looking forward to the evening. I'll definitely be there, so don't venture too far :p

I've yet to be able to play the game yet (RAM is pooped, so I bought some new cards that aren't here) but what islands does DayZ support? Just Chernarus? Of all of the official islands for ArmA II, it seems to be the only reasonable one to support zombies and be atmospheric. Running from zombies in Tajikistan seems strange, conceptually.

I think the most amazing thing the ArmA community does really comes with island design. That adds an entire new playground to play in, especially if it gets mission support. For fucks sake, they remade the island from the original Ghost Recon!
