Last night I awoke to an empty forest. Fellow gaffers far in the north, and back in Cherno. Sheets of rain obscured man, beast, and the dead. Awaiting the return of the expedition from the city. Keeping dry under bushes. I settle in. Watching the city of the dead. Ghastly figures shamble through the rain.
For my ending the life of a bandit who preyed upon the living last night, I have gained humanity.
The expedition is surrounded in the city. Nix is desperately injured. Saved from death by MOB. Another gaffer perishes. Trapped in a hospital. After fending off the dead, they resupply and creep from the city. Flares are thrown. More GAFFERS assemble. Six in total. Nix leading. Mob making sure no one is lost to the night. Me, our map guide.
Krappadizzle had perished earlier. Now returned, we raid a farm house. Three wait outside while we clear the zombies from the barn. I watch the door. But one zombie is ignored and wails against the night. No deep breaths for this killing. Three shots return the dead to rest. Supplies, weapons.
We return to our run. The zombies in the land dwindle in number. Have we outlived the plague?
Finding a dam, we attempt to get our fill of water. No luck. MOB barely escapes the currents with his life, left now with but a pistol.
We are reunited with docbon! Joyful is the moment of reunification. We pledge to join with yet more gaffers at the region's main airfield. No walkers meet us as we refill on water.
Doc leads us north. Nix admires his athletic ability. We try to stem complacency. The airfield! Laid out before us. I sneak into a watchtower. Survey our situation. No movement. But.....a man, in a watchtower?!
Nay, but a lamp of the night. We continue our march to the hangers. A goat is spotted on the runway. Fresh meat would be grand. Campfire, warmth.
Spotted! No wails, but a man running. He disappears into woods. We circle the woods, descend upon the airfield. Dead bodies, evidence of a raid by fellow GAFFERs. Doorways, barriers prove near fatal in this land of creeping death. Bandages and blood transfusions are given.
We move on, once more to the wilderness. And another day of survival.
