Has anyone heard the new De La Soul album yet? I guess Volume 3 of the Art Official Intelligence series isn't ever going to happen.
Anyways, 2004 finds the Plugs free from the chains of Tommy Boy Music and on Sanctuary Records. I was hoping that being on a different label might bring a change to their sound, maybe a throwback to their "De La Soul is Dead" (the best hip-hop album EVER) days... but sadly, this is not the case. Maybe it's the fact that I can't seem to get my head around Dave spitting some gun talk like "If peace don't work/this piece gon' work!". Maybe it's the random guy who talks between tracks and says stuff like "I'm going to fuck the shit outta you!" at the end of the title track. Maybe it's the lack of Prince Paul...
There are some joints on here, though. Just not as many as I hoped for! The best track is #2, "Verbal Clap" - even though Trugoy is pissed as hell throughout the song (it's where the lyric up above comes from), I still can't help but nod my head furiously to the beat; it's probably the hardest joint De La's ever come with.
Finally, any album with Flavor Flav on it can't be all bad (he plays the hype man to Pos & Dave on "Come On Down").
I'd say it's 3 outta 5 stars. If you love hip-hop, check it out and let me know what you think!
