Well , I'm taking my time with this game and just playing story mode an hour a night combined with some random other playing.
I think I've spent enough time now to give at least an overall thought -
It's good but something feels off. I'm not 100% sure what exactly, possibly it's that it feels like this game is a bit rushed. I'm all for making ps3 the lead platform since it tends to be beneficial for both consoles but I can't help but feel that the graphics would be better if they'd made this xbox exclusive like 4 was. I had the option of buying it on either console but I've invested in an arcade stick only on xbox and even though it's hardly necessary for this game I figured, whatever I'll buy it on 360 in case I feel like using the stick.
Earlier in this thread someone mentioned how they found doa4 looked better in a few ways and the more I play this the more I'm finding I agree with that assessment. There's certainly MUCH better character models in doa5, no contest and of course the shadowing is better but man the textures really do look bad in many places - just compare the streets level in doa4 to the new york stage in doa5 , or the monkey mountain stage to the chinese hamlet level in 5. The good looking stages in doa4 just flat out look much more polished even with pre-baked lighting. I'm not 100% sure what's to blame here- the obviously low budget 5 must have had or having to design it first for ps3. Also something to be said about 5 hiding the stage design behind flashiness. You can still fall off ledges or crash through ceilings/walls /etc and it looks really flashy when it happens but it doesn't feel otherwordly like it did in the past.
It's like... I'm not sure but .. it's almost like DOA5 feels like a prototype / reboot but it also has to attempt to be similar to the old games. It's certainly still fun to play especially now that I've seen some of the newer moves and tried them out for myself but I just can't shake that feeling that it's missing something or it feels off.
Also my budget complaints , I'm basing that almost entirely off the hilariously awful story mode, no CG whatsoever , everything is in game and instead of using some consistent stages like MK did last year they have levels all over the place so they constantly have to subtitled " a few days later in XXXX" to cover up the 3000 mile distance difference. When I say awful I mean that in an entertaining way , like it's so bad it's funny but still.
Either way I'm glad I bought it because it's still fun but it's not doing it for me like I thought it would , I kind of hope this team gets a chance to make either a deluxe version of this game or a port to next gen systems where I think they'll be able to fully pull off stages as large as doa2/3/4 with the added flashiness of 5 AND have high quality textures everywhere while keeping the better character models.
I'd still say it's worth grabbing for DOA fans if for nothing else then to see someone elses take on the franchise and that IS what's going on here on some level , it's noticeable, like when twisted metal 3 and 4 were made by 989 instead of singletrac but not nearly that disastrous.
