Dead or Alive: Last Round's Soft Engine Comparison (PS3/PS4)

I think all "next-gen" fighting games so far have been disappointing in that regard. These should be perfect showcases for full cloth and hair physics on the characters.

Well, truth to be told, for now all the "next-gen" fighters have been shown as "not final visuals". But you're right, they're kinda be lacking...
Back in the days, Dead or Alive 4 was mind blowing for me, with the hair physic, even if today it looks funky hahaha.
But from a fighter, you'd expect new skin shaders, mindblowing hair physics and clothes... but more than that, animations !

Will the PC version have this or are we getting the PS3 version like with DW8?

I think the safe thing to assume would be that the PC version is a port of the PS3 version. The fact that they've given no details on any of the PC version options is cause for alarm.

I don't really see any differences besides less contrast and less saturated colors in the ps4 pic.

A bit hard to be impressed after seeing XV's skin shaders though.

FFXV won't look that good in-game, during cutscenes sure, but during the actual gameplay nuh uh.

This is what i'll look like, which is more comparable to DOA.

I remember seeing a much better comparison with Hitomi, months ago. The breast physics are certainly improved, the skin is harder to say because there could be other lighting changes at play as well.

As someone who doesn't care about the boob physics and usually turns them off, I'd have much rather them spent their time retexturing the stages but oh well. Anything that makes the game look less plastic and fake is a good thing, I guess.

I feel like I've been waiting for last round forever, though. When was this damn game announced? Still playing DoA5U every so often though. What a great game it is.

That old pic is from when the game was still using the Ebony PS3 engine before they switched over to Luminous and is a huge step below any of the new stuff SE has shown. This is how the characters look in-game when you're controlling them now.

I for one am glad they're keeping us abreast of this situation, I can't wait to see how this develops.

They'd be boobs to avoid making a volleyball game. I bet money the spiking physics have also progressed substantially.
I'm a terrible person for getting the jiggles out of doing puns.

DOA is known for its over the top focus on titillation, nobody has to be part of IGN to acknowledge it.

Were you under the impression you were watching a trailer released by their PR department? I can see why the unlisted, offscreen handycam footage might have thrown you off.

Still there's jaggies and shimmering, SMAA T2X or HRAA would clean that right out, I can't believe this. It doesn't seem that the game has received any upgrade really, the lack of polygons shows, stockings/socks on kokoro are all boxy and octagonal instead of round, textures look the same.

Why couldn't they focus on next gen and make this a much better looking game, It's a last gen port for crying out loud. It's not like TLOU which went from 30fps to 60fps, this was already 60fps, all they had to work on was the graphics, improve the models, improve the textures a million fold and give this thing the best IQ in a fighter yet, with these bland environments, I'd wager they have enough gpu grunt for 8x AA and TAA combined.

Looks great, still not as good as that Luna gif model though.

Yeah, I hope they rewrite a lot of engine for the next game. The environment rendering and textures are really bad, even on the next-gen versions.

They still have 2 years to reach it. :P DOA6 hopefully should be revealed by then so it should be interesting.

That are the little moments when I'm sad that I'm working in the engineering field and not in the wonderful world of advanced software technolgy.

oh my God dude, one doesn't need to even acknowledge this specific video to come to the conclusion that is widespread believed about DOA :P

There's already been upgraded models on pc already.

But in general DOA5 has done wonders for the series, it's not just in tournaments on console, the game even returned to Japanese arcades.

That wouldn't have happened under Itagaki.

It's the lighting.
Cutscenes will always have an advantage of perfectly placed lighting compared to gameplay where your character will be viewed from any number of angles.

Also that Luna model isn't particularly that unbelievable (the skin shaders are unrealistic, the face anatomy is kind of off too etc basically it's anime esque design), we've seen better more technologically advanced and more realistic models in real time in other games.

I'll take your word for it. I've always thought DOA was a really bad fighting game series, so of course I definitely wasn't going to try for a fifth time with DOA5 :P

But I hope it is great for people who got into DOA5 obviously

DOA5 is actually really good and the I can play online without complete lag. Granted, it's not perfect but it's the best DOA since 2 IMO.

Will this come with all/most of the DLC costumes, or will that still cost an extra $500000000 on PSN/XBL?

comes with 400+ costumes (to unlock in playing), we're at 600+ nowadays. They haven't given a list of which ones will be in yet.

Is this an updated version of older versions of DoA5, or a sort of sequel? For example, with P4A and P4AU, they changed the story modes for all characters to link them as a duology. I believe SFIV and SSFIV did this. Is DoA5:LR like that, or just an updated version of DoA5, containing everything the older games did with differences only on a gameplay level?

There will be some rebalancing (TN said in an interview Bass will be stronger than in previous games for example) and possibly some new gameplay features but they haven't announced them yet. Apart from that, it's a port with the same story and modes.
The game is there to make the old fanbase transition and to try to expand it a bit.
DOA6 is coming after that with new story, graphics made for those consoles, etc
even if we're getting NG4 before that, and we may get DOAX3 as well
.

Not really, it's just a port started recently (there's no netcode for this reason), so I'm pretty sure it'll be the PS4 version, which will be easier for them.

Yeah, I hope they rewrite a lot of engine for the next game. The environment rendering and textures are really bad, even on the next-gen versions.
I'd say they should straight up build a new engine, they should probably use cryengine 4 which has some good AA options available, would kill all those jaggies and shimmering outright. I would not mind seeing a new DOA using the Luminous engine, if that was possible, I'd wager that their environments and character models would finally be something to boast about.

As it is, DOA5 just got lots of power thrown at it and I'm not seeing what improvements was made as a result, perhaps I should wait on better videos, but if the models are still octagonal, the textures still weak and there's still shimmering and jaggies (at least get rid of those), I'm not hopeful that it will be that much better in a clearer video or in a month's time at release.

I actually think they can come relatively very close to that after playing Lightning Returns on PS3. The models look really good considering it;s last generation and even the hair is impressive.

I think all "next-gen" fighting games so far have been disappointing in that regard. These should be perfect showcases for full cloth and hair physics on the characters.
Certainly true.

But what makes this stand out is that we are talking about Team Ninja. Since the Naomi version of DOA 2 these dev team distinguished itself of how much emphasis they made about stage interactivity, big and multilayered fighting arenas and the attention to detail they put into the characters, specially in the cloth and hair simulations.

From the DreamCast to the PS2 to the Xbox to the 360/PS3 they always delivered. i would say even the Mussou launch game for the PS4 showed more clearly improvements than this.

And like someone pointed out, if Team Ninja wanted a less technical challanging work load why not focus in IQ instead? But not even here we see much improvement.

Worst part about the IQ is that the fans raised the lack of AA months ago, only to be fobbed off with a 'This isn't the finished product / we'll pass your concerns to the devs' answer from some PR, if I remember correctly.

With the amount of excess power they must be working with here, surely some kind of AA would be the simplest addition? But even that's too much. What's worse is that the two next-gen only stages are textured as if they're still on last-gen. It's very disappointing.

The only consolation is that there's plenty of actual new content in the game - the 3 DLC characters (whom I've never played), 2 brand new characters, 2 new stages etc.

DOA5 keeps delivering goods. Good combat system and fan service. (Now bring back Level Design from DOA2 and 3)

Unrelated but I'm noticing this guy doesn't look like the prototypical Asian pretty boy you see in modern Final Fantasy games. He looks... well... white. Like someone with European origins. Not that it's a bad thing but it's just something I wasn't ever prepared to see in Final Fantasy.

I really expected graphics like this in a fighter and that perhaps fighting games would set the bar, this certainly is not happening. The only game left is soul calibur, Sony please revive bloody roar, get the IP from Hudson. A next gen bloody roar with good fur shaders, fluid and impressive transformations and great IQ is just screaming to be made.

Here is a trailer from the PR dept, see from 25 seconds on:

While DOA5 might be a competent fighting game, LOL at the implication that one of the main focuses of the game isn't to titillate and put their female cast in as skimpy clothes as possible.

That would be sure as hell a no buy from me if it's a port of the PS3 version again.
Why the fuck would someone do that?

It's great that fighting game developers are out of the graphical showcase game so they can focus more on the gameplay than the visual appeal.

Because it just goes to show that games like Guilty Gear, which is currently setting the standard for how fighting games look, tell a lot of the people who ignore it & scream 'more graphics!'
