Dead or Alive: Last Round's Soft Engine Comparison (PS3/PS4)

Maybe my eyes betray me but I kind of like the character models on display here better than the ones in Tekken 7 as far as we've seen. I don't mean artistically but as in the ones in DoA5 doesn't look as plasticy/shiny. Maybe Tekken 7 will add some shaders etc. to make the characters look better.

I admit, I buy the Dead or Alive games not just because I love fighting videogames, but because it is such a turn on to see those hot/sexy babes fighting each other. I'd love to be able to caress those fine ladies, if they were real.

I think the safe thing to assume would be that the PC version is a port of the PS3 version. The fact that they've given no details on any of the PC version options is cause for alarm.

Well, that's too bad, and too late for me as my copy's already paid for. "Insulting" PC ports based off last-gen versions is not something I'd want to support, at all.

I think all "next-gen" fighting games so far have been disappointing in that regard. These should be perfect showcases for full cloth and hair physics on the characters.

I'm sure they're running in to cost ceilings. Outside of maybe Street Fighter, none of these games sell well enough to justify extremely detailed models and generally high production costs by modern standards.

It's just like strategy games could show the limits of modern RAM with a high unit count, but they don't because those games don't sell well enough to justify it in almost any case.

Putting that tag into good use I see. I'm afraid you're propably right though :/. They used to sell enough to justify the high production values in the past though. Just read from the tekken wikipedia pages and Tekken 5 sold like 6 million copies by 2009 yet Tekken Tag 2 only managed to sell 1.5 million copies by halfway through 2013 missing their sales target. These games would be the perfect showcases for character models and cloth/hair physics but with the declining sales of the series I doubt we'll see that. Thank god for the more stylized fighting games like Guilty Gear Xrd which looks gorgeous and having seen a little more of SFV I think it will look good too.

Tekken sells pretty well. I don't think it's quite a cost issue as it's these game will take some time for a proper edition to come. With the re-relases and such.

When team ninja comes I think they'll bring it. It's more that few fighting game devs really push graphical fidelity outside of team ninja to be perverted.

Just imagine a game with sexy male characters with only dressed a slip and an enormous penis which physic applied. Just to put the thing in another perspective.

They'll probably make this game around the same time they make a game with women in skimpy clothes with giant vulvas with physics applied.

Comparing breasts to penises is puritan levels of prudishness.

Mortal Kombat and Injustice can probably, erm, justify it, they're just artistically disgusting so it doesn't show very well.

No, he's right. That's why Tekken had to go F2P even though before TTT2 came out, Harada said that Tekken sold more than enough to not have to succumb to those tactics.

The budgets for fighting games in particular has been hit hard with the money involved being much less on return for the investment by the development house in recent years. There's just no point whatsoever to push graphics or fidelity much, or even really refine your own engine really given by how many devs are resorting to middleware to save on projected development costs. Although i do think the games can obviously still look good, this isnt times gone past.

It just seems like a big waste when they can work on other things. Animation in hair and cloth are considerably better and the 1080p shows more detail, but I'd rather they work on ground textures than boob textures.

Man, we're already seeing things like clothing being animated separately from the body (Uncharted 4) and really nice hair. Maybe we can finally see some boob slips next gen.

They're creepy. They still have doll skin and dead eyes.

how many times is team ninja expecting us to buy this game

This would influence my purchasing decision - positively.

Although what I really want in a fighting game (or any game) is to have a muscle and bone physics engine similar to what the Euphoria Engine did in Red Dead Redemption with the muscles on the horses realistically flexing when they ran - but taken further. Having a character's muscles and skin visibly react to movement, or being able to see a character's ribs or other skeletal outline become visible when they breathe, stretch, etc. would be incredible.

I feel like that's the ultimate destination of physics engines such as this.

Couldn't agree more. Even as far as realistic blood circulation so you could give characters a bloody nose or maybe even broken bones. Realistic bruising of internal organs that then begin to impact your characters ability to fight by dynamically affecting there animations.

....one day!

I absolutely LOVE all the posts in this thread about how this is all Team Ninja could possibly do with all this fancy new hardware, when this is a fucking port.
Considering what ND, Rockstar, and Crystal Dynamics just to name a few were able to do with their next gen ports, you really can't blame people for not being very impressed, especially when the main noticeable difference is more unrealistic jiggle physics.

You know what's sad is this is all they could do given an entirely new hardware generation.

Meanwhile go back and compare the leap from DOA1 SS to DOA1 PS, or DOA2 DC to PS2. Same generation ports, way bigger difference.

Actually, I do hear this sometimes. The PS2 version actually looked noticeably worst than the DC version. It was more washed out looking, featured lovely jaggies and the DC version had better textures, more vibrant color and better image quality if I remember correctly.

On the other hand, the ps2 version had 60fps cutscenes, and a 'shine' layer, that allowed materials to reflect light in a very prototype fashion

Looks good, but I hope that they add some proper AA or something, I mean if Last Round is filled with jaggies like ps3/360 doa5 is. Soft engine is kinda useless.

Maybe 1080p res is going to fix jaggie problem?

Alaising isn't a resolution problem. Downsampling (making a larger resolution and then shrinking it down) does help. But going form 720p (which DOA5/U was IIRC?) to 1080p (Last Round?) wouldn't fix that.

I don't know if they are going to include AA, but the automatic boost to 1080p should in effect solve a significant portion of the jaggie issues

It won't because they will still be there if there's no AA, they just need to add some post AA or 2-4xMSAA and that would help a lot.

Why are we assuming the PC port is based off of a version that isn't even getting all of the stages announced?

If they showed a new hair style or stage when announcing the pc version then it's getting the ps4/X1 version, since the older gen versions are just getting the new characters and costumes. Based on the spec requirements it's safe to assume it's not the PS3 version.
