Huge (original) Dead Rising fan here. The first Dead Rising was my favorite Xbox 360 game and it probably still is. That game encapsulated everything I loved about Capcom before they got weird to me and I somewhat lost interest in their games. I bought and played through all of Dead Rising 2 at launch and while I more or less convinced myself at the time that I was enjoying myself, in retrospect I realized how disappointing it was compared to the original. I had no intentions of ever playing Dead Rising 3 before I bought my Xbox One, but my family wanted to get me something other than cash for the holidays so I told them to get me some games that I would have most likely not have purchased on my own (hah). Well, my father bought me this game and now I'm really glad I got the chance to play it because I'm REALLY enjoying it!
This game will never be the original Dead Rising...but HOLY SHIT does it blow away Dead Rising 2. I will have to say though, the first couple of cut scenes were a bit hard to watch. That diner scene at the start where they essentially recreated that scene from the first game where the old lady opens up the mall doors for her dog...yeah, really, really hard to watch in this one. The dialogue was BAD and the characters felt like they were ripped out of a B-tier Walking Dead-like TV show (and I don't even like or watch that show). I will say one thing, I'm glad the game seems like it's taking itself a bit more serious. Also, nothing is worse than that stupid death match game show nonsense from the second game. So bad. The Zombrex thing is just so embarrassing though, a little disappointed to see it return. I thought the first game had a legitimately cool/interesting scenario and ever since the second game it just feels like any other zombie film/game. No cast of characters will ever top the crew from the original and none of these car/bike mechanic dudes will ever top Frank. With that said, I've come to accept those facts, however, as the game itself is just too much fun!
I'm usually not overly concerned with graphics and I'm hardly ever looking to be impressed by "how many things/people" you can fit on a screen, but I gotta say seeing all those hordes of zombies at the start of the game (where you basically jump across a sea of stranded cars) was pretty impressive. Also, is this game running at a steady 30FPS? I've rarely noticed it dip and the load times are like nonexistent (unlike DR2 where its performance/load times sort of made the game even worse than it already was). I'm also digging just how streamlined the whole game is. Combining items on the fly, great/helpful menus and waypoint systems and such. It's just a lot more pleasant to play despite feeling a bit unrealistic/cartoon-like being able to hold and craft a bunch of shit in the middle of the street without tools, but it's a videogame so whatever. I also really like how the safe houses keep track of everything you've worn/picked up/driven, etc. Between the side missions and all the bonus objectives/collectables (love the Frank statues, cool touch) around every corner, it's really hard to put down.
There's just something about the Dead Rising formula/structure that clicks with me (even with DR2 to some extent). I feel like it's a series that is holding onto particular elements/philosophies that I would feel/experience when I would play an old school Resident Evil game. I just love how these games are scenario driven with multiple outcomes/endings too. Now that we're three games in I want to say that Dead Rising still feels more survival horror-like than any other pseudo-horror game out there like The Last of Us or Dead Space. I just love the flow of exploring/leveling on your own, experimenting with weapons, and then facing a boss (psychopath) to unlock a new area/progress the story. There's usually some sort of wrap around or shortcut created too as you play. Good stuff.
