Dead Rising demo TODAY. Now. :o

Is there any mission to do in the demo? I didn't really catch that.

Or is it just play around and test things out kind of demo?

As far as I can gather you simply run amok and test out what the demo has to offer. No primary objectives.

I thought zombies were stupid....but this one is smart :/

This demo has gotten me considerably more interested in Dead Rising than I was before. From the demo alone I think I enjoy the random sandbox gameplay in this game more than any other sandbox style game, even more than GTA. Also, the two plot points I've seen so far (the sniper hicks and the crazy guy in the theatre) are really cool, so that bodes well for this game actually having a neat story as well. I have a really good feeling about this game now.

I think the golf club is my favourite weapon so far. Also the skateboard is incredibly fun.

My hopes for the game that I'm not really sure on, maybe someone can answer these questions:

1. Are there "harder" zombies later in the game? I think I remember from movies seeing zombies that ran at you with shopping carts so I think the answer is yes, but I'm not sure. I have the feeling this game could really use some crazy zombies with chainsaws :)

2. Is there a car you can drive around in that large grassy area on that map? I think I vaguely remember seeing someone drive a golf cart in a demo but I could be crazy. It would be awesome to drive around in this game in a golf cart.

1. Supposedly the Zombies become much more aggresive at night, so that should add a challenge. Plus there are always the crazy bosses.

2. I've seen pictures with the player driving a car and other vehicles (I believe I saw the golf cart also), they even show the car on a loading screen durning the demo I believe.

Watch that 1up show video review. They show Frank in a car just mowing down like hundreds of zombies in the underground parking lot.

I just played a bit of the demo. Awesome, awesome, awesome. :D

So what are some of everyone's favorite improvised weapons so far?

Mixing untouchable & spitfire gives Zombait and man... That makes stuff crazy.

I had like 40 zombies all around me, and then drank an untouchable.. Was pretty neat to stand on top of 40 zombies who were trying to eat me, but couldn't :P

Looks like I've got some more playin' to do because I've no idea what untouchables, spitfires, or Zombait's (?) are. :)

Hell yes!

The only problem I see so far is that the text is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too small. All of us poor folks with regular old TVs are screwed.

I must thank CAPCOM for their demo of Dead Rising!!! My XBOX360 died soon after playing the demo, after 7 months of intense life (bought on early december). No matter how air conditioned was my room, how cooled was the huge power supply, my poor baby suffered the same destiny of EVERY launch X360 (sorry Bill, I know, it's just 3-5% of them!) Tons of dots, lines and white squares now draw a beautiful chess field on my HD screen, appearing every 2 minutes even if I switch off and on again the box! But I am so happy that you cannot even imagine since every friend of mine already got their units replaced with new MAY 2006 models with samsung quiter DVD reader...God bless Europe for imposing one year warranty to Bill Gates' crap toys (and all other electronic equipments to be honest...)

to be back on topic, this game rocks! I will buy the limited edition when it will be out on september 8th

Okay, so now I've completely downloaded this 1 gig demo TWICE, and both times all it will do is switch to a black screen as if it is loading and then crash my 360. I can't get back to the dash and have to reboot the thing. WTF...

man i can't read what the words say from the books! text is too small!

anyways the demo is awesome. the best part so far is the skateboard. NFL, rock and roll!

Awesome demo, September can't come soon enough!

Just out of interest, has anyone been experiencing some "tearing" in the demo? (my 360 is connected via VGA if that helps)

Anybody else have their xboxes freeze over this? I had it crash like three times in a row. It seems to be o.k. now though...

(awesome game btw)

Am I the only one who sees "Shoekins" as a Street Fighter reference?

SHOEKIN.

(Also: Bachman's Books is undoubtedly a King reference.)
(Also: Anyone notice that Niuk's Books Chuck Palhuniuk reference in Saints Row? GAMERS AM READ.)

No time limit. The only way the demo will end is either by dieing or walking into an area like the mall enterance or theater.
Eh? There's definitely a time limit. The demo ends at 7pm when the zombies turn into uber zombies. You can keep track of the current time by hitting left on the d-pad to check your watch.

Anyway, zombie walking is hilarious. Just stun the first of a group of them and jump up on his back, then you can walk on their heads. :lol

This demo is so good. There's way too much to do in only 15 mins. I love throwing pies, the katana is sweet, the uzi is badass, not to mention zombie bowling. There's just so much fun to be had. I honestly thought the breakable weapons would suck, but I'm more sad than anything when they break, then I just go and grab something new and continue to have fun.

Capcom is doing Lost Planet too right? This demo feels about as good as Lost Planet did to me, wonder why this game is coming out so soon and we still have ages to wait for LP.

I'm not going to download the demo... just going to lick my chops for the next three days and buy the full game on wednesday on my preorder.....

Your impressions are making it that much more to look forward too.

Awesome game. Exactly what I expected. The only negative I can find is one that several other people in the thread have mentioned already...the pause when you hit someone with a large weapon. Also, is it me or does the game look a bit dark? Hopefully they will let you adjust the brightness in the retail version. I'm using an LCD tv.

Another positive reaction here. The gameplay, which was my main concern, is great. I don't think I'll ever tire of going on a rampage and taking out zombies left and right. The graphics are top notch except for the occasional pause when you hit a large number of zombies with the sledgehammer. Also, did anyone else notice the popup when you sometimes enter a store? Like the items in the store just appear all of a sudden. Nothing too bad though. The cutscenes are awesome however. The animations, character models, texture work, and camera work is amazing. The demo definitely has me pumped for the complete game next week. Can't wait. :D

This is the first game since Oblivion that I HAVE TO HAVE. I'm poor, but this game will be get on next Friday. I didn't realize it was out so soon! The next week, I'll have to get Saint's Row as well.

You Americanos might not have seen it, but in Shaun of the Dead (British Dawn of Dead inspired film with Simon Pegg) there is a scene with them killing a zombie to Queen's Don't Stop me Now - could be a fun re-enactment.

It's a pretty huge hit in my area. My best friend and I are massive fans who quote it on a daily basis. So you better believe we were re-enacting the record-throwing scene in the CD store already. At 9 a.m. this morning even. :D "It's not hip-hop...it's Electro..."

GameSpy: Playing Dead Rising, I felt a definite comedic influence and a reinventing of the zombie genre, like what was done recently in 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead. Did those films also influence the game?

Keiji Inafune: Those movies that you mentioned, what those symbolize are a recreation of what the old zombie movies used to be. Those original zombie movies had a comical aspect to them; they weren't just scary movies. They were humorous to a certain degree

28 Days Later was humorous to a degree? I didn't realize it through all the horror and carnage. Though that scene where Cillian Murphy kills that little boy could be funny to a different sort of person.

I noticed the Bachman's Books nod, but didn't notice the "Shoekins" and Niuk's Books reference in SR. Damn, I may actually give it out to the SR and DR guys for reading up.

My two favorite weapons are easily the electric guitar, and the shopping cart. As soon as I saw the zombie with the shopping cart, a maniacal grin appeared on my face.

I hit the zombie in the back of his rotting head with my Fender Strat, and rode the shopping cart all the way back to where the demo began.

Did anyone notice that female zombies start chewing away at...Frank's crotch? :o

First off, yeah, noticed the crotch biting. Hilarious.

And I second the Fender. It's quick and devestating, plus Frank does some killer moves with it (and the sound effects rock!). It's my favorite, though it doesn't last too long.

ProTip: Each Guitar has its own third combo move. See if you can find the differences.

Yeah, my bad. I downloaded it before I went to work today and fooled around with it for about 30 minutes and never ran into the 7pm thing. I either died or ran into an area that initiated a cinema. I never paid attention to the watch.

Come on now... it looks great but it's not at the top. I think GRAW still holds "best graphics" title.

I disagree...With so much thats going on and the effects of everything(weapons) makes this graphically better. The little things.

Anyway..can someone tell me where the uzi is?

Err.. just like all the media released, including the pics in this thread?

I disagree with you as well. Guess we've come full circle.. heh.

As for the Uzi, it's over the camera shop near where you start. Head straight from the beginning and head up the first set of stairs you come across. Mid way up the stairs look to your right and you'll see a blue awning. Jump and grab it, then make your way all the way to the end.

Another Protip: Found another handgun. It's in a garbage can just outside the entrance to the bathrooms.

There are two long halls that go from the main mall area to the back rooms where the restrooms are located. In front of one of them (if you were facing the bathrooms, it would be the left hall) there is a garbage can near the entrance. Smash it and you'll find another handgun.

Edit: the entrance to said bathroom is between Sportrance and Ye Olde Toy Store.

As for graphics, I find some of the textures bad, but the most important ones, such as the human faces and blood, are absolutely beautiful. The first few you see (the wall and especially Frank's shoes) are really bad.

played this demo for two straight hours. it nails the "trapped in mall during zombie attack" vibe perfectly. Seeing the kobun head splattered with blood is hilarious.

Yeah, I mean, even though it's meant to be more fun than scary (I feel no fear at all), this is one of the best survival horror games that actually felt like a battle for survival.

First review: James Mielke on 1Up gives it an 8/10

Praise:
-"Dead Rising brings to mind memories of other ambitious games that tried to expand the survival-horror genre (like Blue Stinger on Dreamcast."
-"The languid halls of the Willamette Parkview Mall stretch on seemingly forever, filled to capacity with movie theaters, food courts, bookstores, lingerie shops, toy stores, music shops, sporting goods merchants, and pretty much anything you can think of that would appear in a mall. Now consider that each one of these stores contains a weapon, food item, instruction manual (to help you learn new moves), or clothing item.
-Every item has its own animation and style of attack. While you may bludgeon a sole zombie with a park bench and its corresponding single slow attack, you'll find that a guitar not only has a space-clearing 360-degree arc, but that it hits multiple times. Then, while you may expect a mild result from clubbing a zombie over the brain with a giant yellow Servbot head, you might just laugh out loud when you unexpectedly plant the foamy object on a zombie's head, which renders it harmless, content to walk into walls as if blind, deaf, and dumb."
-"One of the best things Dead Rising has going for it is its sense of humor. When Frank runs out of weapons or ammo, pulling the camera in to over-the-shoulder shooting mode (RE4 style) while pressing the attack button will cause him to hawk loogies at incoming zombies."
-"The end result is a relentlessly inventive game worth the price of entry."
- "Provides a wealth of secrets and mysteries for both eager gamers and the adventuresome. With each repeated play through a stage, Frank becomes stronger, better able to uncover the mysteries behind this allegorical horror adventure (we'll let you discover what really makes zombies zombies), and the experience becomes richer for it."
-"No hardcore gamer should miss the wholly unique experience provided in Dead Rising's debut."

Complaints:
-"Uneven visuals. there's nothing particularly bad about any of the character models, but they don't really look next-gen. Yes, they sport higher polygon counts, but you get the feeling that that you're looking at characters for the Xbox 1.5 more than for the 360. The flip side is that you're seeing dozens and dozens more of these NPCs and monsters onscreen than you would on any other hardware platform. Still, with the exception of the highly detailed cut-scenes, it comes off as a bit too sanitary."
-"Odd game structure. It intends for you to replay each chapter, while retaining the experience, stat boosts and attacks learned in preceding playthroughs. Clearing the first chapter, for example, is much easier the third time through: Not only do you know where to go and what you can do, but you have a stronger attack rating, faster speed, a bigger life bar, an expanded item inventory, and a longer throw distance."
-An awkard save system. You have the limited options of either save points, or recording your statistical progress and restarting the level entirely."
