The teaser they released a few weeks ago was a bit hit or miss for me but the full trailer looks like it could be a very fun and thoughtful watch.

DEAR WHITE PEOPLE follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over a popular “African American” themed party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film will explore racial identity in “post-racial” America while weaving a universal story of forging one’s unique path in the world.

No bald cap? Lies!
Maybe. Could be interesting and eye opening, or just tired and pointless. First half of the trailer was a bit overplayed, but the second half came across more interesting and insightful.

Also, now I have the urge to watch Higher Learning.

Really looking forward to this. I don't think it will be this revolutionary springboard for social change, but it looks like it may take an even-handed approach to the awkwardness of racism, both overt and casual, in modern society.

Plus, Tessa Thompson is a GODDESS.

What does "post-racial america" mean exactly ?

It's in quotations to indicate irony, I believe.

It won't change any minds or teach people much I don't THINK. It would only be used to validate already held opinions. I'd love to be proven wrong though. I have a feeling that the most important part of this movie will be the preppy black guy. Sounds like there's a nice speech in there from President Palmer that could be important.

First I've heard about it, but it looks funny as hell.

Not just the movie either, but the reactions are bound to be sogood.gif.

I think the movie is more about exploring what blackness is where whiteness is dominate.

Don't agree with that definition of racism she floats. It can't just be about a system of disadvantage. It has to include racially-premised pejorative attitudes in general.

What if it turns out to be pro Lil Wayne?

Maybe the movie doesn't take her stance in a two-second clip in the trailer as rote.

I like to think of the idea of "post-racism" as "new racism."

Pretty much a way to dismiss the qualms troubles of minorities by pretending that those problems no longer exist.

I'm sure it doesn't, and I'd wager the movie involves her learning a life lesson or two about that one, but it's not the first time I've come across that opinion.

I doubt she's meant to be infallible within the context of the movie. I don't think anyone thinks that that's the entire definition of racism.

*cue opportunity for growth and character development*

Also.. has any significant amount of actual critics completely trashed this movie, or can I assume that the 4.1 IMDB rating is because someone made a thread about it on Stormfront?

Cringeworthy....at least after watching the trailer. It was like they tried too hard. Not the actors, but the message/script. :/
