December Wii U firmware update to address application load times [Up: Incorrect]

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
EDIT: It has come to my attention that Engadget's report is inaccurate. During the Nintendo Direct, Satoru Iwata noted user concerns of slow application loads and the initial launch update download time, and the company's intentions to address these complaints, but did not specify any particular firmware update. The update mentioned in the report was separate, and specifically a software update for Dragon Quest X in Japan.

The Wii U launch didn't go quite as smoothly as consumers would've liked, with a major update to sit through right after unboxing, and support for various video streaming services absent on day one. Well, head honcho at Nintendo Satoru Iwata has taken to YouTube and announced from his cream studio that the next system update is due late December. It's primarily being pushed out to improve the frustratingly slow software loading times on the new console -- an issue we highlighted in our review. Iwata only makes a fleeting appearance at the beginning of the video before it moves on to talking up the latest Dragon Quest iteration, but if you've got a decent knowledge of Japanese, the embed awaits you below.

Engadget.

brilliant news, although I would have preferred it work properly out of the box instead of having to download firmware update after firmware update from their excruciatingly slow servers.

I am ok with this. If they address the horribly slow loading times, pretty much my main gripe with the Wii U will be solved.

Now about those games....

Good.

I feel like my experience of the system would improve tenfold with a snappier OS, and I say that as someone who is enjoying the system.

Great news! with faster loading times I might actually use the Netflix and browser app on WiiU instead of the iPad as I do right now.

This is good, Nintendo seems very ready to make the WiiU work as intended, even if it is through updates. I just hope I can keep a damn connection this time. The last update took 17 or so tries to finally download.

Nice. Now only to fix the NNID issue and the weird ass store's restrictions and I'll be there nintendo! I'll be there for you!

This is awesome. Can't wait to download. But keep them expectations in check, I can see this only being a slight improvement :(

how likely is that they will use the same servers they use foe downloading stuff from the eshop? because those downloads are blazingly quick. downloaded the rayman demo is lessn than 30 mins for example, the patch, which was half the size took almost triple / quadruple that time and that was after a botched attempt where the download stopped altogether.

Eh... I don't think the problem most are having is 'application load times' as such, it's the OS in general. I can get into Netflix reasonably quickly, but getting back to the OS to do anything else is awful.

It will be interesting to see the results. Other than the load time for the Settings menu, I haven't had a terrible experience. Still, this is welcome news.

Different people have different perceptions of what is "slow".

However, it seems a big issue with Wii U application loading and menu switching is that certain apps load concurrently with major parts of the OS, while other apps - despite being smaller apps! - flush much of the OS from active memory.

Example: the web browser (rightly praised as a great browser) seems to load and quit without requiring the entire UI and WaraWara to be reloaded or generated in the background.

But the simple spotpass notifications screen takes a long time to connect, pull data, and then the OS feels as if it's reloading the basic UI when quitting.

Or how Miiverse can be loaded and quit from several situations without seeming to flush everything else from ram, but the friends list application appears to take priority and shoves everything out when you load it.

Given that the browser works so well out of the box, perhaps it really is a matter of each application being optimized one at a time, to play nice with the OS environment and take advantage of all that ram reserved for the OS.

i hope they patch the activity log. it sucks compared to the 3DS one.

i'm not sure if i prefer this approach of constant firmware updates.

Are they sure they haven't got this mixed up? I thought the December update being referred to was for Dragon Quest, going to version 1.2.

Unless he talks about two December updates, but that's not how it was reported on the GAF thread.

Yep. It's Nintendo, so slight improvement is probably going to happen.

Can we do a before and after comparison? Anyone who has the system willing to note current times for some apps?

I'm not too up on technical details, but isn't the 2GB of ram this system has meant to help with faster loading times? What the heck has Nintendo been doing since they announced the system 2 E3s ago...?

There is no precise definition, but I think most reasonable people agree that the Wii U OS performance is subpar.

I agree it's slow. I was mainly referring to some folks who remark it didn't bother them / they didn't notice the slowness they hear others referring to. For some, the current load times won't trigger impatience; others will notice right away that the OS feels unoptimized.

"Fast loading time" was never something mentioned or talked about that I saw. More that a gig of ram was (for now) reserved for OS usage. That doesn't necessarily mean reserved to create super fast loading - it could be for complex applications, loading multiple applications at once, running complex services in the background (like Miiverse).

As for what Nintendo has been doing - personally, I'd figure they've been working on the fundamentals of the technology by launch. With all that's come to light about the nuance and complexity of making the gamepad work right, it seems a great deal of resources when there. On the OS front, whether we like it or not, all of this stuff involves Nintendo spreading out into unfamiliar territory. Network technology, multitasking operating systems, etc, is a new business. It seems pretty clear that they were and are working on the OS full tilt, constantly.

One point of interest: for all that people point to the Xbox OS / Xbox Live as the "gold standard" for modern game consoles, it doesn't often seem taken into account that it was designed by a company that specialized in operation systems, networking, and internet. That's a powerful advantage to have on your side, such a pool of experience to draw from. If anything, Microsoft has a nearly unfair advantage over everyone else (not just Nintendo) in this area.

Good to hear that they're working on it; the last update improved the opening of all the different applications for me, but closing them and going back to the main menu is still painful.

I want to believe, but history as made me a jaded person, especially in matters involving the big N.

I expect 1-2 seconds shaved off at most, per app.

The load times didn't bother me to much, but I'm happy they are speeding things up. I've already been through this with the 3DS initial OSCAR being slow and then patched to run quicker, so really no surprise. At least this one came out quicker.

I have absolutely no idea why it's so different for everyone, but the load times for loading apps definitely went down for me.

Yeah, I noticed maybe a marginal improvement on loads, but it still being slow. But I do remember things like Miiverse closing out instantly to the main menu as a stark improvement.

Of course, it's possible that I just don't pay close enough attention to this stuff and I don't know what I'm talking about.

When did Iwata mention a December update for speed issues? He mentioned that they were looking into it and would improve it, but I don't recall any mention of the upcoming update doing anything for that.

Did I miss something in translation, or is Engadget speculating?
