December Wii U firmware update to address application load times [Up: Incorrect]

What exactly is broken on the Wii U? Is there any feature that doesn't work as intended? Long load times does not equal broken software.

At launch there were lots of things not working without a update. Even now I have a Nintendo TVii button with zero mention of the feature actually being implemented in my region.

Wii Mode is broken in that there are zero Wii Settings in the mode so I cant adjust ANYTHING about the system. Colours are worse and I'm sure the framerate is not 100%. PAL Wii U. So there are a number of issues.

Updated op with the TRUTH. Thanks cheesemeister.

This is something that people definitely need to remember going forward when asking if Sony or Nintendo are ever going to "catch up" to Microsoft. On the OS front, I don't think they will ever entirely catch up to MS -- a company that has spent almost the last 40 years building operating systems. The only company that's even gotten close (and arguably surpassed Microsoft) is Valve -- a company of software engineers and game designers founded by a former MS executive.

Nintendo and Sony definitely need to reach a certain minimum standard when it comes to networking and operating systems, but I don't think they're ever going to soundly defeat MS in that regard. Even if they do reach feature-parity with Xbox Live's current form, MS will probably advance beyond that next gen in a way Sony and Nintendo won't see coming. They need to reach a certain standard, but in order to ultimately succeed, Sony and Nintendo should also focus on their own strengths.

Nintendo probably put more resources into the GamePad than the OS because that's what they're good at -- control interfaces. Sony put so much effort into turning the PS3 into a powerful multimedia box because that's what they're good at -- appliances. Same with the Vita when you think about it.

And personally, somewhere between MS and Sony may be the sweet spot for me. While I appreciate MS makes operating systems, I don't want bloat on a console. Sony with their CE background keep it simple which I also appreciate.

I don't want a full windows box. If it did, I'd buy a full windows box. I want a device optimised to sit under my TV that lets me access the things I find important without getting in my way.

Perhaps but if all the apps are seperate executables (as has been reported) and they are unoptimised and bloated having huge memory requirements each, loading would be slower than if they were optimised with less data to load, no?

I don't find games slow to load, but perhaps that's because my expectation is managed. They will be big, full experiences and I'm happy to wait a few seconds.

For the OS, I'm even ok with settings taking a while to load, but it should drop back to the main OS instantly. No reason to unload wara wara and do any app closing housekeeping in the background.

Certain key apps like miiverse (actually perhaps *only* miiverse) I'd load up alongside wara wara (in the background so I can still navigate the main menu as quickly as possible), so it's always available to switch into without any loading. Although TBH miiverse is pretty quick at switching back and forth already,

LOL.

Update: Nintendo's PR people have been in touch and we've had one of our bilingual editors take a look at the video. Unfortunately, something was lost in translation and our source was mistaken -- the update in question is for Dragon Quest X, not the Wii U system.

Lost in translation? Yeah, right.

That's shameful, no crediting you for the translation on GοNintendo?

I'm actually a bit surprised by that -- the normal Gο Nintendo procedure is it largely reprint an article and then include a link to the source. I've always thought it odd, but they have generally provided a link to a source. It looks like this one just links to the untranslated Youtube video.

This is amusing... Nintendolife just posted an update saying:

We stand corrected
We reported yesterday that Nintendo President Satoru Iwata had apologised for the long loading times when switching between applications on the Wii U. He went on to say that a solution was in the works, but no time-frame was given.
That's great, Nintendo took responsibility for this minor hiccup; we all accepted the apology. But now that's all gone down the drain, as after the news got out about the presumed solution to the sluggish operating system, the PR folk over at Nintendo got in touch with Engadget to rectify this announcement. Iwata actually stated that an update is in development for Dragon Quest X, not the Wii U OS.

What's really odd about this is that their prior story merely said that Iwata said they were working on the slow loading. That appears to be quite accurate, but Nintendolife is apologizing for making a mistake they didn't even make...
