Fave Five of 2016, friends.
1. Kento Miyahara
At this time last year, I remembering wondering and half hoping that All Japan would close up shop already so those contracted wrestlers could join other companies and strengthen those rosters. Instead, Kento Miyahara put All Japan on his back and, with the help of Jun Akiyama, led All Japan back from the brink. That's not to say that All Japan is ready to challenge New Japan or Dragon Gate for dominance. However, Akiyama smartly booked wrestlers from smaller indies on All Japan's shows to bolster the undercard and let Miyahara carry the top of the card with solid defenses against veterans like Ryouji Sai and Takao Omori and lighting it with defenses against Kengo Mashimo, Daisuke Sekimoto, and Akiyama himself. The company is now stabilized and primed for incremental growth, and it doesn't happen without Miyahara making sure the main events are something people want to see.
2. Chris Hero
Chris Hero ain't nothin' to fuck wit', especially in 2016. He's had a year for the ages, and you could easily fill your top ten list list with Chris Hero matches against the likes of Tomohiro Ishii, Katsuyori Shibata, Zack Sabre Jr., Tracy Williams, and Matt Riddle. He got a really good match out of Timothy Thatcher in 2016, which is a feat in itself. He had great tag matches in Evolve and PWG teaming with Tommy End. He'll leave a void when he leaves the independent scene.
3. Daisuke Sekimoto
I probably could have moved Sekimoto to the top of the list based on this alone:
Look how happy he is! However, you look at the Strong BJ vs. Big Guns feud and how much he helped Zeus grow as a wrestler, his great Triple Crown Championship match against Miyahara, the great Strong BJ tag matches in Big Japan's Saikyou tag league, and the incredibly entertaining tag match from Fortune Dream 3, and you see a 2016 resume that's hard to challenge.
4. Zack Sabre Jr.
The rivalry with Chris Hero, the Best in the World series of matches in Evolve, the run in the 16 Carat Gold tournament, the underrated series of matches against Will Ospreay around the world, and the run in the Cruiserweight Classic all highlight another great year for Zack Sabre Jr. The tag matches with Marty Scurll as Leaders of the New School in RevPro and wXw also highlight his 2016, and even less hyped matches like the one against Prince Mustafa Ali for AAW were good.
5. AJ Styles
The face that runs the place, Styles has done something unprecedented: go from the semi-main at Wrestle Kingdom to wrestling in WWE PPV events in the same calendar year. In the process, he's also pulled great matches with Roman Reigns (Payback and Extreme Rules), John Cena (Money in the Bank and SummerSlam), and Dean Ambrose. In the process, he's also proven that he cuts a pretty good promo, which had been a deficiency.
6. Will Ospreay
7. KUSHIDA
8. Kenny Omega
9. Tetsuya Naito
10. Kazuchika Okada
