Ring of Honor has announced that Alberto El Patron, aka Alberto Del Rio of WWE fame, has signed a contract with the company. For the time being, he is scheduled for four dates, including the March 1st 13th Anniversary PPV from Las Vegas.
This news has come as a (pleasant) shock to this fan, as El Patron was rumored to be in talks with TNA and Lucha Underground. He can likely still pursue something with those companies, but for now, Ring of Honor fans have a lot to be excited about.
So, why the excitement?
First off, El Patron's stiff submission-based style fits perfectly in the ROH ring. His hard kicks, stiff strikes, and cross armbreaker submission are part of a moveset that will complement any number of Ring of Honor talents. He could mesh well with wrestlers who possess similar war crates and a penchant for hard-nosed matches, including Kyle O'Reilly and Tommaso Ciampa. In terms of dream matches, I'm sure fans will be clamoring for El Patron vs. AJ Styles or Adam Cole, and I'd be surprised if we didn't get one or both of those matches before his run with the company is over.
Second of all, El Patron has a huge chip on his shoulder right now. After feeling slighted by the WWE, and showing a ton of charisma and personality in a Wrestle Talk TV shoot interview about his experiences there, the former World Heavyweight Champion likely feels he has a lot to prove. Much like AJ Styles when he left TNA, Patron probably has some pent-up rage for how he was used in the WWE, and he is anxious to show the world just how talented he is. If the ROH story above is to be believed, he has asked to face the best the company has to offer. A man with that kind of hunger is going to lay it all out for everyone to see why he’s valuable. This move to ROH could be the start of a personal in-ring renaissance for Patron.
Finally, this move ensures that Ring of Honor’s 2015 will kick off with a bang. They managed to do it in 2014 with AJ Styles, and they’re doing it again with El Patron. This time around though, they’ll actually have both guys at a televised PPV in March, which will likely generate a few more buys than their solid 2014 offerings. With acquisitions like these, Ring of Honor is creating a bigger imprint on North American pro wrestling than they have in years.
A suitable style, a slew of potential dream matches, and a man with something to prove to himself and the entire pro wrestling world. All of these things combined ensure that Alberto El Patron will leave his mark on Ring of Honor and wrestling fans in 2015.
