How would you guys feel about a situation reversal?

White guy + middle eastern cafe + racial slurs

Regardless of the results, would you support any sort of action he might take against those people who insulted him?

the Bush twins were denied service becuase of who they were as individuals, not because they belong to a racial or ethnic group.

The situation is completely different since a restaurant in this country can refuse service to individuals but if it tries to deny service to entire ethnic or racial groups it violates civil rights.

True, but in both cases people were denied service by a hostile staff. I just think that once race gets involved people lose perspective. This was the act of a single person not the Denny's corporate policy, unless there was a question on his application that asked "Do you serve Bin Ladens?" and he said no. I don't think you can say that these guys deserve that much compensation. The dumb ass should have and did loose his job as any employee would for so overtly offending a customer. I do agree that these people have a right to demand some sort of compensation but 28 mil, fuck no. They're just like any other American trying to catch a ride on the lawsuit money train.

I'm not saying there isn't a bigger problem here. But why should Denny’s be held accountable for America's current issue with fear and hatred toward Arabs.

That's just a tatical figure...you throw a ridiculous figure out there, with the intent to settle at a more reasonable figure. Secondly it gets people to notice the case...nobody would've batted an eyelash if they'd sued for say, $28,000. But throw out $28 million, and suddenly it's a big fucking deal. Which is generally the idea.

They can sue for 10 billion dollars if they want. Its up to a jury to decide how much they get. More than likely their lawyer looked at similar cases and picked a nice round number based on the number of people involved in those cases and in this one.

If Denny's can show that they take every effort to train out that sort of behavior, its likely that they won't be held accountable. Just because they've brought the case doesn't mean its going to be successful.

If the term bothers you then its really all up on your insecure head which associates it with being lesser the person. You're correct. I agree to an extent about Denny's hands being clean in this situation, Denny's as a company obviously doesn't support that POV. On the other hand, if the accusation is true and it was said that "We don't serve..." that infers that either that restaurant in particular, or Denny's in general.

By default these people are representatives of the company, but they could have easily said "I don't serve..." and could have been fired for such comments.

Personally I think that other avenues should be taken before suing in a situation like this. On the other hand, how effective would those other approaches be? Complaining to Denny's probably won't get much action from their end.
