This weekend!

This is probably the biggest year for it, because now, Hyperspace Arcade joined up. Normally it's 80% pinball machines.

I don't recommend the 3 day pass unless you are REALLY hardcore but a day pass to check everything out is great. Saturday will be crammed.

I'll be playing in the Pinball and arcade tournaments and helping take score.
Thank Christ I'm not on the hook to move machines this year. Nearly killed me

I'll be there. My buddy and I are driving in 6 games from Salt Lake City to show. I'm working on finishing up the restore on my Genie, hoping I can make that one of the games. I also have a live show on Saturday of my podcast as well. We do that every year, so why quit now?

I love RMPS. I'll have to connect with you. I'll be playing in the tournament, so we'll probably cross paths.

I wish I could go this year. There is a lot of bad timing with other things going on and limited funds. It's a bummer, too, because I hear that one of the big tournaments this year is Black Knight, which is one of my best tables.

I bought a townhouse in Denver, moved in early May. Sadly, I never really have a decent reason to leave the house, other than buying groceries. I need to make an effort to explore the area. I have no idea if this part of town has a cool nickname like LoDo or whatever, but it'd make telling people where I live much easier than trying to describe by naming the few nearby streets and landmarks that I know of.

Genie's a widebody right?

Have you played in the tournament before? I've done it 5 years now so we've probably met.

If you didn't know, this year it was voted a PAPA circuit event so much bigger payout at the cost of the top plays in the country coming here to eat our lunch,

Lots of good $5 side tourneys this year.

I'll be keeping score at the end of Friday and first shift Saturday. Probably have a GAF shirt on.

I think I heard that. The director released the list of tourney games and it was Black Knight and one other together for the solid state tournament.

The main tournament is all over the place. Mostly new modern but then Medieval MAdness and Jurassic park and maybe Dr Dude so it's going to be tough.

I've been playing in the tournament since RMPS was held at the fairgrounds. We've definitely ran into each other before then. I'm usually trying to get my plays in while ducking Trailer Tom's roaming camera setups.

We started doing our podcast live there about 5 years ago, I believe. It was in the venue that came right after the fairgrounds. The current place is great and I hope they keep it there for as long as they can.

And yes, Genie is a widebody. Showdown hasn't had one for a quite some time, so it will be cool having that there. I'm also bringing out my Ghostbusters LE, but I'll be selling it and I'm not sure if that guy is going to set it up on the floor or not.

I've probably seen you guys before at previous shows. Besides this, you guys ever been to the arcade in Manitou Springs?

Also, I don't blame you for selling Ghostbusters LE. The machine doesn't do it for me, man. I think it's a weak table design and the replayability is low.

As often as I'm in Denver, I actually haven't been to much aside from Pinball Jones (Fort Collins), The 1Up, and Lyons Classic Pinball.

I love Ghostbusters, and I just put a brand new playfield in mine (warranty exchange), but I have serious worries over the long-term maintenance on the game due to the dodgy node boards it uses. I know too many people who have already paid silly money to fix them.

Excellent. I always missed out on the Houston pinball and coin op expos when in lived in Austin. It's nice to be closer to one.

I'm actually going to try to drop by the Manitou Springs arcade this weekend when my wife and I attend the CO Ren Fest. Can't wait to see the arcade again. The last time I visited was in 2010.

Y'all should have a Gaf meet up in Denver in the future. Seems like a community is starting to form (I can't wait to use the term 'we').

What a timely bump for this thread! I'm moving to the Denver area this fall/winter. I've already done a lot of research, and it seems like if I want to

A) drink a lot of good beer

&

B) be near to some live sports and music venues

I could do worse than living in LoDo or maybe Rino, does that sound about right? I can go pretty up there on rent, like $3k/month for an apartment if I find one I like, so hopefully I can find something around that area.

Ideally, I'd be in walking or short ride on public transit to places that played lots of metal bands, and anything related to professional sports.

Natives, let me know if I'm looking in the right direction. Thanks!

Despite the boom this still isn't NY/SF. You will find anything you want for $3k.mo (if that's for a 1bd it'll be a palace).

You could do a lot worse than rino/downtown for sports, everything is downtown unlike most cities, unless you're super into rugby or soccer. As for metal shows you'll find some lesser known bands at the marquee with a few big names a year, summit music hall as well which are both downtown. There are shows all over town though, be prepared to drive or to uber for some, like at the Gothic Theatre about a 15 min drive south of downtown.

What are your major cross streets? outside of City and County of Denver people usually don't go by neighborhood names, they'll say the city (like lakewood) and then the cross streets.

Awesome, thanks! I'd be looking for 2bd because I work from home full time and need an office.

In scouring the apartment sites online, it looks like I have plenty to choose from no matter where I end up. Very different than apartment searching in Portland, OR, which is the other place I was thinking of going. (was in SoCal, so rent seems cheap no matter where I look)

:p oh that's right, I think I talked to you guys last year.

You posted a bunch in the Pinball Arcade thread.

Should be an exciting year. I'll get my qualifying in as early as I can but I'm not expecting much. I actually took 3rd in the main tourney 3-4 years ago and at the time the prize was 75$ lol

If my scores don't hold up, I'll try out the arcade competition. Go figure all the guys that are major pinball operators here are also the best at arcade games.

GB LE is solid. It's one of the few LE's I think I like better.

There is a glut of apartments and a shortage of condos, You'll be fine. RiNo is pretty hipster, great food and venues, Lodo/Ballpark is a little more 'Bro-y', if that makes sense. LoHi just across the river from downtown was hipster and is slowly transitioning into something more adult as they have kids. The only place I would recommend against is Capitol ('Cap') Hill because of the parking, it's an enormous PITA.

Pft. I did Austin to Denver in one day.

Through the panhandle!
Was more worried about my car given how often it overheats but luckily I made it and I officially live in Denver now!

Was going to do it in one go but I overdid it on redline in Oklahoma and had to pull over to a truck stop and crash.

No amazon prime now sucks

After about 10 seconds of Googling, I've learned that I live in the Washington Virginia Vale neighborhood. Glad I got that sorted.

Hey! My wife and I live in Cap Hill and haven't had to park more than three blocks away from our apartment in a year. Of course, we come from Philly so everything from traffic to parking is SO much easier for us than the folks who have lived here a while and have seen it get worse.

Also, DenverGaf meet-up/community-building would be awesome. Gaf is our favorite online community and making that transition to irl only makes sense. :)

I'll be going out Denver at the end of July to do some preliminary apartment touring (though I'm not planning on moving there until the end of the year). Ideally, I'd like something in the general "downtown" area (or perhaps one of the neighborhoods directly bordering downtown). I've heard a lot of good things about the Highlands/LoHi, which is one area I'll check out. Does anyone have any other recommendations for neighborhoods to look at? I'll want a 1BR apartment with rent somewhere in the area of say $1300-1700.

Also, anyone have any recommendations for best ways to conduct my apartment search (other than looking at Zillow or typing in "apartments" in Google Maps)? Are there are any local sites/publications that are worth looking at to narrow/guide my search?

I would definitely be down with a DenverGAF meetup, once I get moved!

Stayed in Manitou last night. The arcade hasn't changed much since I visited 7 years ago. The staff takes good care of the equipment too. I haven't played a Virtua Racing that tight since the mid-90s. The cab was in the same place back in 2010 and it was in just as good shape then. Really nice CRTs installed in a lot of the cabs too.

We spent a few hours at the Renaissance festival on the way back to Denver. It was a bit warm and we decided to leave our costumes in the trunk, but we had a great time. The grounds are huge and the scenery is impressive with the fair sitting at the bottom of a hill.

Then we hit up the last few minutes of the Philippine festival over in Edgewater. Halo-halo was a good way to deal with what the Subaru was telling us was 99 outside. Pancit's in the fridge for later.

Stay cool out there you guys.

I'm driving to Telluride tonight because a friend wants to see the Bluegrass festival. What else is there to do?
Just park the car and enjoy the town. Eat yourself into a coma. Catch the fareless lift into mountain village. Rent a Jeep and hit the trails. Tube down the river that goes through town.

Saw Portugal the man & local natives last night. First redrocks event. Pretty amazing. Sitting at redrocks now bout to see 5th Element XD

i think thrillseekers on broadway has some rope walls, It's definitely worth taking a class to start out. You might also go into Wilderness exchange or REI and ask what they recommend.

I will be in Denver this weekend with my wife for a little anniversary get away. We will be going to comic con for a day but are looking for other things to try out, places to eat etc. We found a sushi, sake, joint rolling class. Has anyone tried it, https://my420tours.com/denver-pot-tours/sushi/?utm_source=Cannabist%20events&utm_medium=calendar&utm_campaign=Cannabist%20event&utm_term=sushi%20denver

Any other ideas?

We do have some great sushi restaurants (though none are downtown) but for a more unique experience I'd recommend Domo. It's a short walk from the convention center and eating the in the traditional garden is just awesome.

I'll be down at Comic con also. I hope to God you'll be taking the light rail. But the first thing I recommend for people visiting here is taking a trip up to Estes Park

It's been confirmed, Denver-Gaf. I got my job offer to work over in Fort Collins. I asked this in Reddit, but what are some good local journalistic publications to follow there? I will, of course, be supporting the local public radio channel, since I love my NPR.

You'll have a choice for public radio between the denver and greeley station. Both have the mainstays but the denver one is more 'city' and the greeley one more rural in their off-hours programming. They're both good, and you can listen to the other during pledge drives!

Westword is Denver's village voice media outlet here. They do interesting investigative pieces occasionaly and keep track of food/events/music well but you'll find it pretty Denver-centric. Denver business journal is good too for a balance. The Denver post is more of a pain in the ass every year but it's the biggest game in town.

Had an RN say that Denver is "brown" for most of the year, wasn't sure what he meant until I saw the pic in the OP.

It was probably a commentary on our air quality, which is still bad but nothing like it was in the 70s. The OP pic is sunset, however, and not pollution. The pollution shows up when looking towards the horizon on cold days and seeing a low brown streak (brown cloud) http://atoc.colorado.edu/~fasullo/1060/aerosols/bcloud.html

Does anyone have any housing tips for someone moving across the state? I've been looking around the Fort Collins area for rooms. I'm flexible with living on my own or via roommates at a house. I have around $1100 to play with (if I want to follow the 30% housing rule).

Hiked the Mountain of the Holy Cross which was my first 14er as I guess they're called. What's a good follow up that perhaps is a bit shorter(think this was 13 miles?) and doesn't have a return climb because that was fucking brutal given how tired I was. Didn't mind the rocky approach to the summit at all tho.

Hailstorm that arrived a few hours early in the last mile of the return climb was miserable tho.

Thinking about moving back to Denver after about a decade away.

When did the neighborhoods start getting dumb names? Like RiNo and SoBo.

LoDo was a thing when I moved away. I was living in the Baker neighborhood, but that name was around forever, just like Cap Hill, etc.

When the gentrification efforts really started maybe.

Maybe moving to Broomfield soon, can't find a decent 2 bed/2 bath for under 1700 a month that includes at least a garage for one car.

I've got a 2 bed 1 bath with 1 car garage in Denver near wash park for 1600. You must be able to find a 2/2 up there for 1700 somewhere.

you definitely picked a doozie to start with. Most aren't that long. Check out oxford/belford maybe.

I just got back. Visited Dry Dock Brewing, climbed Gray's Peak, visited Emerald Lake in RMNP, ate some great breakfast in Estes Park, saw a prairie fire, passed 2 burned semi-trucks(that wasn't cool), drove through a cloud, saw lightning inside of a dust devil. It was a pretty dope trip.
