It would just be nice if we had the choice to engage in random matchmaking or not. No obe would force you to play with strangers. You still could ignore random matchmaking and play with your friends.
IMHO choice doesn't work in this situation...if matchmaking is there, but the experience is terible, the main mass of gamers will not go off and try to find people to pair up with.
They will shout "THIS IS F**KIN SHIT!!!" and then leave never to return. The vast majority would do that, and go back to COD.
If they don't include matchmaking - some people will be annoyed, and some may not buy the game or play any more...but at least some will *try* to find others and team up to play. So overall the net number of gamers playing is probably better.
Bungie have created a console game (there is WoW and others on PC) where a "mass market" audience have actively sought each other out to try and complete nightfalls and raids.
That's pretty unprecedented IMHO.
Putting it another way - from my own persepctive - I game maybe 2-3 hours a week and never thought I would manage to do a raid....but I really wanted to try and the lack of matchmaking meant I found other people and players, and built up a mini-network of team-mates.
If there was matchmaking, I would have popped in, had a terrible time, and switched the game off. I would have stopped playing, probably late September 2014. As it is I am still playing, have flawless raider (the "easy" way with Crota), a ton of exotics and most importantly some funny people to play with.
It was also much easier to find other people, because everyone was in the same boat, everyone else was trying to find a new set of people for the first time. Social online gaming hasn't been like this since original Xbox Live days.
All because they stuck to their guns and wouldn't put matchmaking in.
I'm glad they didn't give me the choice, because I would have made the wrong one.
