Ugh, lm officially ragequitting all PVP matches where the opposing team has more than 3 level 20 guys. So overpowered compared to my team which usually consists of level 5 people... Matchmaking plz

Their gun damage outputs are the same as yours. The damage number can be 5000x vs your 100x gun, it will not effect anything. The stuff that matters, recoil, clip size, impact, range, etc...

Yo. Why are there are no characters in Destiny?

There are NPCs and talking heads in cutscenes but there are no characters. There's the queen lady, her brother, and the Ghost. That's it. Everyone else is either a shop owner or someone who gives you missions. Bungie brought in a ton of great VA talent (Nathan Fillion, Kieth David), and all they do is spew vacant, foreboding nonsense about the Darkness or tell you to go shoot guys.

I really like Destiny, but this is one thing I cannot understand. How can you create such a rich world to tell stories in, and subsequently fail to tell any story? It's not that the characters are bad, or that the plot is bad, it's that neither exist, or are merely threadbare. This is unacceptable coming from the company that made Halo, especially after ODST and Reach. What were they going for?

I get the sense it might have been their attempt at emulating Dark Souls' minimalist presentation, but it doesn't work here.

Yeah it's really strange. Not a single charismatic character in sight. No Master Chief, no Cortana, no bizarre merchants with personality. And such generic names, The Traveller, The Darkness, The Speaker, ugh. All the guardians look more or less the same with their gear on. How awesome would it have been to fight alongside a living legend like a Master Chief equivalent?

I thought Moon was good, then just got dropped off on Venus and did first mission. Holy shit..

Hopefully the pacing doesn't slow down throughout.

A question about upgrading armor. I have this rare armor for which i've unlocked 2 upgrades but for some reason I cant seem to activate them. They have that green ring around them but i cant seem to press x on them an activate both upgrades. Any clue why this is happening?

It means that's an "either or" upgrade.

I do think that a level 20 has way more perks and stat upgrades and that makes a difference in PvP. Not much, but a slight difference regardless.

What's so bad about it? An inquiring mind wants to know, please?

I really don't want to get into this too much because I'm afraid I'll be way too harsh on the game due to my massive disappointment. I will make a separate thread at some point about it, but for now this is my opinion: think about what a player might be looking for in a single player campaign. An interesting story, a compelling narrative, good pacing, decent dialogue and lore, good presentation, interesting characters and maybe some surprises along the way. Destiny single player has none of that. It's formulaic, boring, barebones and flimsy. It's as if a third-rate studio tried to create a Mass Effect knock-off and predictably failed. The single player content is way below the level of other sci-fi action games including Bungie's own Halo. Furthermore the game suffers in the gameplay department since enemy AI is mediocre to bad (see Giant Bomb's quick look, it's embarrassing at times). And I don't really understand why the existence of other players was so important to delay reviews for, they really offer nothing substantial to the overall experience.

With what I've seen so far, reviews are not going to be pretty.

You may not have the materials necessary to do the upgrade. You need glimmer/materials to upgrade rare items in most cases. I'm not at home or else I'd pull up one of my rare items to be sure. :(

Also, I'm curious. How many people that DO like the game played PSO back in the day?

My impressions so far: It's a beautiful game, gunplay is fun and playing co-op is great, having said that though it feels like such a small game right now. Mission setup isn't very exciting either, the only thing getting me through them is being able to play them with my friends, I don't think I could stomach wave defence #56 if I was playing solo.

I got my white PS4 though, so I'm happy.

This is why I wasn't even planning on playing any PvP until I was 20 ... figured something like that would happen ...

Venus does have a pretty awesome mission waiting for you. It might actually be my favorite one thus far.

I have approached this entire game with the idea that this is my story. So I can go and explore things on my own or with friends, do some PvP or solve the mystery of what is going on. It's all up to me. I don't need a bunch of dialogue or interesting characters. Listening to gaffers and my friends exceeds anything any Dev could create. The game's story is the backdrop, not the motivation of anything. There are since people that will do nothing other than PvP, that's fine. Some won't bother with PvP, that's also fine. You make your story and set your own objectives. The game isn't perfect, but goodness, the game was never meant to be about the story. It is all about your experiences

In the Sony headset you can adjust the chat and game sound levels

Have everyone in your party go to the PS4 dash->Settings->Devices->Headset(or whatever it's called) and adjust your Input Levels.

In most cases it's cranked up too high- move the slider to about halfway.

By each person doing this, you won't broadcast the sound of your TV speakers quite as much.

I feel like the story is an epilogue. It went absolutely no where.

Do you have enough money? Those upgrades aren't free.

Yeah, there are like, 4 actual characters
Queenie, Dear Brother, Dinklebot, Strainger's Rifle and You
. The interactions with those charcters is actually cool, they seem interesting and I would like more of them but most of the time it's Dinklebot talking at you (not with you as you only reply with like one line every few cut scenes). And of course you get briefings from Fillion and the other cool sci-fi actors during the Strike mission loading screens. Just wish they'd be part of the story more, I mean, you go back to your "class trainer" every few missions to hand in a reward, why don't they comment more on that or talk to you about what you've given them. "How did you find this? They shouldn't be on Earth. This is troubling. You went to the moon and managed what!? You're crazy awesome dood!". Instead they just sit around the table spouting the occasional one liner and sell stuff.

How is GAF enjoying the game? I'm listening to IGN's day 1 discussion about it and I'm pretty shocked to see IGN of all outlets not being over the top gushing.

Divisive is a word I heard that stuck out, would you guys agree?

One upgrade needs a material but the other one just needs 95 glimmer to upgrade and i have 4400 available. I'm not sure why I cant activate that.

You could just look over the thread and see that divisive is a good word for it, lol. I think the marketing campaign for the game did a lot more harm than it did good, as far as good-will towards Bungie is concerned.

Hated this game at first.. Loving it now.

The sound design for this game is top notch, the moon caverns moans and groans FX make me wish this was a supernatural shooter like Pain Killer rather than a Sci-fi shooter.

I don't think I agree, or at least I'd say this isn't really a fair premise. If you are looking for a focused narrative campaign, then "terrible" isn't even adequate. It's not there. This may be extremely disappointing to many, but Destiny is simply not that kind of game, from the ground up.

Fair enough, but people should really be made aware of the fact that they should stay the hell away from Destiny if they want an at least passable single player experience. You are absolutely right, there isn't one.

Played to level 4 last night and will be jumping on again tonight around 6pm PT to play, would love to join some gaffers around my level! Had a good time playing solo but none of my friends will have the game until the weekend, add me!

PSN: Sn1cky

The more I keep writing this thing, the more insecure I feel about how I'm writing it.

The curse of creative types strikes again.

I should play more to alleviate my headaches.

Now that my Titan has reached LV20, should I keep using it to get endgame loot, Light and stuff, or start a new character (that would be a Warlock)? :/

Anyone else think that the PVP is too easy? The only gametype I actually felt challenged in was Rumble and that was mainly because of how laggy it was.

I'm baffled by this game, they nailed the gunplay and art direction for most of it. But the core hooks that I was hoping for to keep me interested are so lackluster here. The loot is pretty boring and uninspired and there's definitely no feeling of exploration whatsoever. The story is so much worse than even Halo, the writing is seriously awful and I never complain about a bit of a hammy story. Multiplayer is ok but not really good enough to keep me hooked, there's just no excuse for the barebones feel this game gives. I was expecting something on a whole different scale and what I got feels smaller than Halo. Don't forget Halo had great co-op too, I feel like people are attributing all this interesting stuff to Destiny while I feel like it barely does anything different.

It's fun till you realize it's a repition of two formulas:

PvP is this game's redeeming feature. Warframe has better co-op.

Wow that's a bit aurpising for me to hear. I liked warframe but I thought it was much more repetetive and bland in comparison. I didn't try the last major updates though.

That's a bummer man! Different strokes. Seems like it's a love or hate it type game right now on gaf. I absolutely love it, doesn't feel soulless to me whatsoever. My favorite parts include The battles/gameplay, the planets/locations, the sweet loot/weapons, STRIKES, social interaction and seeing other players in the game world. The only thing I'm not really into is the voice acting. I actually like the story for the most part too.

I can understand that. It's incredibly gorgeous and the combat is just amazing. Everything means the world when I am playing, and I'm in a gunfight. It's perfect. White knuckle action! And then the fight ends, and it all feels meaningless to me again.

I really get it. It's a freaking beautiful game with insanely detailed worlds. I took nearly a hundred caps already.

But it's sterile for me and that's a damn shame. I was on the hype train dammit!

Do you think you could elucidate a little or offer something even remotely constructive to counter what you quoted? Whether or not it's what any individual wants from a game, what Crimson_Gold described is extremely accurate as to its design ethos. Anyone sitting down to play will enjoy the experience a lot more approaching it that way rather than expecting a heavy narrative and character-driven cinematic campaign.

How awesome would it have been to fight alongside a living legend like a Master Chief equivalent?
I... am not sure how awesome. Whether awesome or not, the theoretical game you have created here is a very different one from Destiny, and I'm not sure how you write it so as to keep the player from wanting to play as the Master Chief equivalent, instead.

Just got to the very first Moon Mission damn I love it when the enemies pour out and that music kicks in. It gets me hyped. Saved my super for that very moment and as soon as the enemies started pouring out I unleashed it and felt so damn good.

Anyone wanna add me on PS3: voa127

Keep in mind though I'm mediocre at PVP though.

With how bare bones this game is, I wish you wouldn't have just spoiled this. This game needs all of the glimmers of goodness it can get.
How is that a spoiler? It's a gun. I didn't tell you what it was or what it did. Did you think you wouldn't get anything from beating the game?

Ok first complaint.

It took forever to gather 50 spinmetal. Turn it in to the vanguard dude just got 25 vanguard points and 250 glimmer

OUTRAGEOUS!
