Yeah definitely different doors for each enemy type, looks like there's something next to each one that signifies which one is which

Hive barnacle / egg things next to this one:

Fallen crate next to this door:
Excellent observations.

What exactly is going to be the difference between a horde mode and everything singe single-player mission in the game? :p
This is one of those lines that seems funny for a moment but doesn't actually make any sense. There is a big difference between a story mission and a proper hoard mode. Several actually.

Exactly why PoE is likely to be fun once or twice and then a chore after the initial gloss has worn off. I hope there's more to it than I'm imagining, but nothing Bungie has done since launch suggests that.
Understandable to be skeptical, but we do have some indications that Bungie is trying something different with HoW.

From Urk's note about the lack of raid:

House of Wolves will have a new cooperative end game activity focused on variety, replayability, and skill – a new battle Arena called The Prison of Elders.
Variety and replayability are both lacking in static story missions. We also know from the Reef reveal that PoE will not play out the same way every time. How it changes, and to what extent, will matter a great deal, but I think we have enough to go on such that we should not expect the same kind of encounters we see in the story missions.

I think the doors will lead to different areas. As they spawn into that location, we see the door the servitor is behind. And then the camera pans to show another, different style of door next to it.

I'm guessing with each run, we don't do the same area each time, but one as a mini-strike of sorts. Or we have to clear one out to access the next.

Good calls. I didn't notice the multiple doors thing.

I saved a spot for you on our reset activities but you were sleeping like a normal person. :(

Let me know if you want to run some Skirmish practice this week for ToO.
I'm getting too old for the 2am reset grind lol.

Nevertheless, I'll definitely be down for doing some Skirmish this week.

Reach FF was good (not up to ODST), but good. Gears Horde was a ton of fun too.

And I hated all of the examples you listed, so obviously this depends on what you want in a game. I'm sure a straight up horde mode will be fun for many.

I think there's something wrong with you. Halo ODST Firefight and Gears Horde was some of the best shooter fun to come out of the last console generation.

If you really and truly hated Firefight/Horde modes, why even bother with the FPS genre at this point?

It's dying. Sepiks looks exactly like this for less than a second when he dies and his shell blows off.

I think he's the guard / guide to the Prison. Look at hyduxo's pics - he's in the entry way to both the Hive and Cabal themed doors. I'm guessing you open it and he gives you the run down of what's inside.

Sure looks like a new exotic Hunter helm to me.

It's nothing to do with naming conventions and everything to do with wanting interesting mechanics and gameplay depth. CE wasn't a patch on VoG but it's a damn sight more interesting than any of the missions and strikes in the game due to the mechanics (lamps, bridge crossing, sword bearing). I hope I'm wrong but if PoE is just a straight up horde mode (i.e. a door opens, you go in the room and kill 200 enemies and then a bullet sponge boss) like everything so far suggests it is then that sounds boring as fuck to me.

And I hated all of the examples you listed, so obviously this depends what you want in a game. I'm sure a straight up horde mode will be fun for many.

Plus playing with 3 people is inherently less fun than playing with 6.

I personally don't really care for mechanics added to the game outside of the core structure. The relic and sword don't do much for me. I think they're kind of silly in the end.

What all of the Destiny content lacks is dynamic battles. Everything plays out nearly identically because the enemy spawns are static, the enemy AI is not that deep, there are not enough gameplay modifiers, and the enemy types are limited.

My personal hope for PoE is that it adds a number of dynamic / randomly selected elements. I want mixed up mobs of enemies (put Vex with Hive or Fallen, etc.). Give enemies random shield types. Give mobs of enemies a variety of shield types within the same mob. Change enemy spawns between multiple points, and give more modifiers such as enemy health regen to put the pressure on the player to make on the fly decisions.

I disagree with you that 6 is more fun than 3 however, that's just personal preference. I find 3 better since it is easier to get to know your fireteam that way as well as it forces everyone to hold their own more. It's too easy to carry / be carried with 6.

I'm guessing this will refer to Nightfall style modifiers rather than the content itself changing each week. I completely accept that most of my fears are based on my own speculations and I genuinely hope I'm wrong but I've lost a huge amount of faith in Bungie since TDB came out.

I'm mostly bummed out that I can't play with my usual raid crew. Splitting us up just sucks.

In the Reef live stream, the producer was specifically asked if the Prison of Elders was the same each time you went through it. He answered that it changes every time. Not every week, but with every run.

Yeah it's the new Hunter exotic. It was called Exotac Angel Hunter in the leak but it's been renamed. I think it's called the Celestial Hawk now. Its ability was to gain accuracy after jumping, so here's to hoping they made the perk better too.

Because not all FPS games are Firefight/Horde modes? I loved the Halo campaigns but not so much Firefight/PVP.

And VoG is probably the best FPS gaming experience I've ever had. I never even envisaged an FPS game being that fun. It was a bit of a game changer as far as I'm concerned so anything less doesn't really quench that thirst now.

What if Prison of Elders Hard Mode is just higher level enemies and 6 Guardian fireteams?

Hopefully I have egg on my face big time tomorrow when all is revealed.

Assuming it is just a straight up horde mode then I'd be more into the idea with 6 players, but still disappointed if the gameplay lacks variety.

Yup. The one that gives you more accuracy while jumping. The one I'll be rocking 24/7.

Awesome. I thought it was but I wasn't 100% sure. I will definitely be wanting it to drop purely on aesthetics!

ODST firefight is THE best horde mode I have ever played. My buddies still talk about our time with that mode.

I hope Prison of Elders works similar.

The limited health packs and Halo AI difficulty made Firefight the best horde mode I've played as well. My limited time with Reach's didn't capture that same sense of urgency, so I wonder if the health packs were that crucial of an element to it.

I hope PoE can capture it.

I don't think they're going to put 6 players in EVERY PvE situation. It does affect how they have to balance enemy waves and encounter design, there's a reason raids tend to have heavy puzzle elements because if it was just straight shoot 'n gun, six people can put out a lot of firepower in a small amount of time.

Dunno. We'll see, I guess.

All they have to do is change a burn modifier and he's not lying...

Limited ammo helped with that too. Once you got deep into the rounds you were constantly dropping weapons and scavenging for anything that had ammo. The only negative to ODST FF is that the blackeye skull changed the gameplay dynamic too much. It should have greatly slowed / reduced shield (stamina) regen instead of requiring melees to refill. That combined with buggers made some rounds too tedious in the end.

Having to use weapons that enemies dropped versus the standard human guns also changed how you faced the larger enemies like the brutes and hunters. It's much different taking on a brute with a plasma pistol vs a sniper.

I have an exotic bounty that requires me to dismantle 10 rare or better fusion rifles. For the past few weeks, every time I go to the gunsmith, he only sells greens. I need five more dismantles. Is there an easier way to do this?

As others mentioned above, there are some good websites that can alert you when the gunsmith sells rare fusion rifles.
Another possibility is starting a ROC strike train and gather lots of blue engrams to decrypt. However, this is just as RNG as the gunsmith selling rare fusion rifles.

Welp. Since Bungie fucked me good with IB this time, I didn't get to Level 4 to get my helm for my Warlock who is perpetually stuck at 31 now. I guess I'll just wait for HoW later this month and get a helm to push me to 32.

In my rants for dynamic elements, I'd like to propose a few difficulty modifiers:

Loadout Lock - Subclass, Weapons, and Armor are fixed and cannot be altered throughout the mission (perks included). Ammo synthesis is disabled.

Rainbow Shields - Enemies spawn with a random elemental type of shield.

Switchblade - Player and enemy melees are one hit kills.

Bounce Back - Enemy health regenerates over time.

I never understood why Lightswitch wasn't universal, like if it's turned on and we really want to melee something and take the risk then it should be a OHK just like it is for the enemies vs us.

Not 1HKO. That's way too OP. Just something like 200% or 250% damage.

That way no one is just blink/melee-ing everything large.

Actually, it would be awesome if Lightswitch applied to players, but enemies with shield up didn't receive the extra damage.

I think OHK is fine if it goes both ways, because it's easy to get meleed and killed yourself. Like if you want to take the risk and try to melee something in a nightfall you better be completely sure you're not going to get hit by something before you do it.

Drizzay will surely deliver on his post. I'm sure of it.

I'm still waiting for his mega celebratory post to drop. I'm sure he will deliver. Someday.

It's a work in progress, I promise! :p We kept playing for a while and then I've been busy with life stuff but it is still on the way...

Why do people hate Crota?

I've written a short novel's worth of posts criticizing CE and the Crota encounter especially, so I don't want to keep beating that dead horse here. Simply put CE is dramatically shorter, smaller, less developed and mechanically simpler than VoG. It doesn't build a mechanical vocabulary from start to finish like VoG does (culminating at Atheon) and it doesn't require remotely the same level of teamwork.

Last I checked, the world record speed run to solo NM CE was ~12 minutes. Crota himself is especially egregious for throwing team-based raiding in the garbage, in exchange for a Sword All-Star and 5 yokels who stand around shooting rockets at a stationary target.

The only beef I have with the Crota raid is that all of the loot is at the very end. With Vault of Glass there are random loot drops (and chests) spread throughout the raid so you're constantly being
potentially
rewarded.

The VoG and CE loot drops are basically identical: Drops after clearing 4 encounters + 2 chests with upgrade materials (edit: 3 for VoG, including one of the exotic chances), and both raids have 2 locations with potential exotic weapon drops. With CE being so much shorter (less than half as long) the drops per minute are much higher. Technically VoG has another "secret" material chest and a standard Venus chest with Spirit Bloom, but people rarely get the secret chest anymore.

Watch the video, not the gif... He wasn't even agrro'ed on me from the first break because if that was the case he should have hit me on the left side, not turn around and smack me while I'm already invisible .

I watched the video, the part I was referencing was your initial approach to get the sword:

KYqE3n.gif

He aggro's onto you and shoots his Fist Blast at you as you approach directly towards him. I believe the glitch, at least partly, is related to generating this aggro pre-shield break and then his broken immune response causes it to be enacted on his recovery. So he won't (and never has with me) attack on your initial invis approach but only after an immune response.

I'm not claiming to know all the details, and there are absolutely many other issues with him, but this behavior has been consistent across oh-so-many Scrotastic hours. I've seen it while running sword and when watching others run sword, more times than I care to remember.

VoG is probably the best FPS gaming experience I've ever had. I never even envisaged an FPS game being that fun.

+1 million to this
