1000 Yard. You want to be the highest LL for Oryx.
I'm in a similar boat, I didn't touch factions in year one, at all. My Vanguard rank is crazy high, because I always stayed with them. I thought they were a faction, apparently, I was wrong.
So since TTK came out, I've thrown everything I have at FWC. This includes buying Heavy from Variks and Eris and turning it all in.
I'm at rank 24 right now, hoping to hit 25 in the next week. It's slow going right now though, because I literally have nothing left to give.
What you can do is farm glimmer at Gatekeeper then buy Heavy Ammo synths. That's what I did to get the Exotic class item quests on each faction at TTK launch.

I just obtained my first exotic weapon, the Ice Breaker. Is it worth using/keeping? I am not a big fan of sniper rifles. What is the general consensus on this weapon?

I got the ugly ass DO ship. I haven't seen anyone say they got Fermi Solution since TTK so I switched to New Monarchy since there's nothing else from DO to get.
It sucks starting with a new faction because it seems you have to go through the emblems before you start getting shaders and then finally the ship. Wish I took Ocean's advice and bought the emblems before they removed them from the vendors.

Same here! They didn't change with shaders so they were dead to me, haha.

I may need to do this. This weekend I'll see if anyone has a checkpoint and then I'll just keep doing that. I do have like 300 Ether seeds so Varicks would be the best bet.
Welcome to Destiny. It'll be helpful for a while until you start Taken King quest chain and then it be will gradually get worse as you continue. Great exotic though, used to be the rage in Y1.

Ran through HM up to daughters yesterday on my main, got zero HM drops, just NM stuff. Disappointing 
Hoping to finish HM Daughters and Oryx in the coming days, maybe the RNG gods will bless me. Still no HMG for me after multiple raid clears.
At this rate I have zero interest in leveling up an alt to get HM ready.

I think that the biggest misstep in Bungie's blueprint for this game is thinking that end-game players will be happy with being anywhere from 311-319. My two characters are 313 and 314, and by all accounts, don't need to be any higher. But I'm driven to get higher light level drops, because the carrot is 320. I SHOULD be happy with just having fun with the gameplay knowing I am high enough LL for all the content, but I still get bent out of shape when I do HM on both characters and don't increase LL at all. It feels bad to not progress, and the system communicates progress through LL.
It seems that I better learn to love PvP (aka git gud) or find another game because as soon as I feel my progress has a glass ceiling in Destiny, my motivation for playing will plummet. I'm sad that this is probably the case after this week.

I guess it's maybe a decent option in Crucible PvP with the regenerating ammo but it's a Year 1 exotic that has not been given a year two version so it will max out at 170 light compared to the ability to go to 320 for Year 2 weapons so for PvE and anything in PvP where level and light matters (Iron Banner, ToO) it's rather useless I'd say.

You're not the only one. This is exactly my state at the moment. Looking forward to Fallout next week and some Borderlands/TLoU shenanigans in between with some of my clanmates
I don't have fun in Destiny anymore, it would be unhealthy to keep going.
I'm stealing all the loot in Borderlands.
What kept me going wasn't the loot chase(it's all shit anyway) but the people I played with. Seeing as trials isn't fun I doubt I'll do much outside of 3x reset raids where we can all just take the piss out of each other.
Don't know what game to bother with next, not buying Fallout 4, not interested in CoD multiplayer anymore, maybe I'll get Battlefront.
All this Hand Cannon talk made me buy a Villainy and fully upgrade it this morning.
edit: I'd said SS melted Valus because i had multiple party members using it on him. He went down fast enough Id assumed the 'specialist' modifier was active on it but I'm not positive (since it's a fusion rifle).

Finally getting around to doing Exotic Sword quest. On the Material gathering part. Does it matter where I farm? Has anyone found an optimal farming area for this?

Unless there is a 320 Artifact we don't know about, the OCD among us will have to survive with 319.9 Light as the max for now.

You're absolutely right, the people I played with kept me going when there was shit loot. But now most of the time you don't get any loot. The only thing left was Trials, but the lag and loot (or lack thereof) made me realize I'm wasting time here. But who knows maybe we'll return to Destiny before part 2

I have this roll. Can confirm it's real damn good. It's been my favorite Trials primary, infused up to 312. It's brutal if you hit your two bursts, aim for dead center mass.
Can't go wrong w vendor Nirwen's or a well rolled Hawksaw though. Most sweaty matches I see have people using Hawksaw, fwiw.

TTK was so good at first. But with the terrible loot, the absurd nerfs to strange coins, weapon parts, faction XP. The trials changes, and NF changes for the worse. Destiny took two steps forward and 5 back.

1) It stands for "Programmed Random OCcurence". This term pretty accurately describes the event itself, both its randomness and the fact there is some special effect. 2) Short for Procedure, or Special Procedure.
The goal is implied from the flavor text for the quest itself. You gotta collect enough of the mats you needed to get the legendary sword of the same element until you get this legendary purple mat.
You'll need 10 of these purple mats to finally get the exotic sword.
Programmed Random Occurrence is better though. I was only speaking from a dev perspective.
In the description it tells you to gather helium filaments (moon).

Yeah I also got the Y2 DO ship, and I've never heard of anyone getting the other two DO ships to drop in Y2. Would love some clarification around this... ranked up DO a bunch of times having everything else and never saw the Y1 ships drop.
I have gotten all of the FWC shaders after TTK dropped, but I am still missing two emblems. No ship. It does seem like you get the ship last.

I have 15 normal completions + 9 hard completions and have only gotten the Titan normal helmet twice. (310 and 305).
Putting everything in Oryx's loot table was dumb.

Whoever decided nightfalls should go from 500 rep to 50 rep needs to be taken to a dark corner surrounded by 1000 thrall with only a Kings Fall hand cannon.
