Destiny - Review Thread

Being serious, hearing some of the criticism about the game (and that UI dev's tweet) makes me really averse to purchasing this game right now since it seems very barren as a whole. But then, if I wait, I have to grind my way to burn down all of the beginner content to get to the good stuff that may or may not come later on?

Not really inspiring purchasing intent from me in the short or long term.

What dev tweet?

Does no one find this game shallow ? The loot does nothing for me and the enemies are bland and generic feeling. I'm gonna give it some more time but I feel like I'm gonna sell it.

I agree and am in a similar dilemma. I bought the game but its unopened due to this thread. After reading that the game is basically the beta in disc form (single player content last 6 hours, the story is hard to follow or non-existence, locations that should have been in the retail game have been put behind a pay-wall, etc.), I have decided to return the game and wait for the inevitable finished product a year from now (hopefully). I would rather support another developer than have the game go back on the shelf after a few hours (since I am not interested in the repackaged Halo Multiplayer modes that I played 10+ years ago).

I was at the store today and was trying to make a choice between reaper of souls and Destiny, I bought into the hype and well to be honest I did expect better, the product doesnt justify the time they spent making the game somehow...

Destiny will be a better game 3-6 months now. Unless you really want to play it now, you can afford to play it at some point in the summer of 2015. You could probably get the core game for cheaper, too.

I thought about this as well. The game will probably cost $30 in the beginning of 2015, and the DLC will still cost $30. So, in reality, I will be paying for the finished game at $60 by waiting half a year or $30 for the inevitable game of the year version in the 4th quarter of 2015.

Well, time to hop back into it. For what it is, it has been addictive as hell for me. I missed playing yesterday and feel it calling my name.

One thing I think we can definitely celebrate Destiny for is having a mostly pain-free online experience for the week of launch. I haven't encountered a single hiccup with regards to disconnection, host migration, etc.

I hope more online-heavy console games start doing Public Betas in the future.

I see a very very solid base for a great game.

Just look at Diablo 3. Vanilla was so.... unbalanced and incomplete. Right now is a solid and well deserved 10/10 (IMHO), it's a completly different game.

The problem I see with this is that Blizzard is well known for completely improving their games every once in a while for free (at least with their PC versions)

Bungie already had plans for DLC before the game was even released, usually when companies do this they usually don't bother to change vanilla content and rely on the consumer buying the stuff that makes the game good

Even if they release free DLC that improves the game, they need to change the leveling experience up to lvl 20 because otherwise most people will just stop playing before reaching the good part

In no way is it a 6/10. But in no way I am surprised that Polygon gave it that. I know it is subjective, but still.. a 6/10?

I would give it a 7. Taste is subjective and Destiny is hardly perfect. As many people on GAF state, 6 or 7 are only a 'bad' score in the world of marketing and Metacritic bonuses.

I agree. From the looks of those content schedules they recently released, it looks like the next year or so of stuff is already developed or almost complete. Any drastic change addressing the problems being brought up would happen in Destiny 2 next year.

Destiny seems like this big budget game designed to be as accessible and attractive and unoffensive to as many people as possible. For all its big talk and marketing, its actually pretty damn unambitious. Nothing weird or unexpected(well there was that one part with the sword), no humor or style that might offend sensibilities, or cool out of left field gameplay concepts that people might not like. Sci-fi but not TOO sci-fi so bullets for everybody There's even a T-rating so everybody can play it. Vanilla, bland, competent.

true. I mean they took out "that wizard came from the moon" line because a few people found it funny.

I've put over a day of in game time and can't see myself stopping anytime soon.

That doesn't happen often with me. This game is addictive.

I really have no complaints with the game and I can see it growing so much as it already is with what Bungie is adding.

I love it because these reviews have come out and entirely new game aspects were revealed today like the Agent of Nine seller. Hahaha. Idiot reviewers, it's like Bungie purposely wanted to expose that bullshit and internet clickbait.

Most reviews just compare it to Halo. It's not Halo, and I like the universe they have created. If only the Grimoire stuff wasn't separate in the companion app/online, it would have really helped because the cards are actually really well written.

Level 23 - Male Exo - Titan

Burying stuff in logs and menus is always a mistake in my opinion. Find a way to work it into your story. FFXIII suffered greatly from this and Destiny does as well (though not to the same degree).

Is that the plan? Annualized titles with a few small expansions?

.....Joke post?

There haven't been too many direct comparisons to Halo except gunplay and A.I, the former being a real positive and the latter is mixed.

I'm level 24 and think I'm done with the game...The repetitiveness comes from the few selection of weapons, small amount of loot, limited space to play in, hollow planets with very little to do... The loot is actually bad, you definitely get more doing PvP if you're on the winning team but it's just so random.

I also dislike this cryptarch bullshit, If you give me a purple engram let me have purple gear (0/6). Clan thing is just a useless tag and it's a shore to get a group going just for the weekly heroic strike...

Worst offender of all, some mp maps are really sucky to play in, I didn't think they could do a shittier map than the one on the moon but the one on Mars with vehicles topped it off.
I could overcome it all if the net code was good but it's worse than bf4 imo. I can't count how many times I shot a guy first just for the hits not register and him killing me but drying later. Shoot a Titan with a bazooka straight intro face just for him having to rise up and superpower your ass happens almost every game I play. It works for and against you, I sometimes dominated some games with a shotty, was basically untouchable.

I haven't done the vault of glass but the game hasn't been out for long and I'm already tired of it. Ultimately I really don't care about review scores but to me that says something. Not disappointed cause I kinda was preparing me for this but I thought this would last me till FIFA 15 was out o:

No. It's a small addition, but the game keeps growing.

I love the game, I haven't beaten Mars yet story wise and I am at level 23. Ploughing through as fast as you can makes it boring. Exploring the worlds is amazing. I get a BioShock/Rapture vibe if these old dead human civilizations on our terrestrial planets.

From among the alpha and beta, I never thought the game would be so divisive. I really enjoy it. Its a shame others aren't.

That's gibberish isn't it. Stupid mobile phone

Perfect Dark Zero

Never forget. Never forgive.

This has to be a mod.
My sides hurt holy shit.
Nah this can't be real.

I don't know if this is appropriate, but seems the "design director" for destiny was a previous cinematic lead and mission dialogue writer.

He left Bungie on 09/2013.

I'll repeat that:

Destiny's creative director actually left the company end 2013.

It's clear that the original vision was very ambitious. The vidoc dates aug 2013.

It seems what we got in the end is a scrambled out product by a different lead.

I like the game too, but I don't think it's a reason to write off criticism of the game (not the pie in the sky crap) and tout a vendor selling exotics on weekends as entirely new game aspects that somehow would affect perception.

Everyone knows there's more content coming. That's not the issue. It's how empty the content feels outside of that core mechanic loop.

I mean, where does it end too? Should reviews not happen at all because that stuff will be added?

Maybe it isn't the media or consumers who should be blamed here.

I'm pretty active in the Crucible and I've never had an issue with regards to netcode. My three-shots-for-a-kill hand cannon has served me fine and hasn't had problems registering when I'm playing well. Sometimes I just do awful and that's on me and my wavering skill level.

The potential is there, but Bioshock wouldn't have been nearly the same if the audio logs were only available on the official website. Nor do the worlds have the same level of environmental storytelling you get in a Bioshock area. You don't get a sense of something specific happening before - nor do you even really get a sense of why enemies have chosen each of those spots to set up.

Its gorgeous, but doesn't tell a story except in the broadest of strokes.

I wonder what those of you who have also played a lot of Borderlands 2 think about Destiny.

I loved the style and enemy density of Borderlands 2. It made every moment exciting. Lots of empty, dead space in Destiny by comparison, IMO. Less inspired weaponry thus far too.
