Cryostasis was great. I wasn't a huge fan of the movement speed, but the atmosphere in that game is laid on thick. I also love the environment and the use of heat as a game mechanic.

Back to Destiny, how many bosses do you guys think the Glass Vault is going to have? This the "raid" going to be the be-all piece of endgame PvE that people will play for months like in similar games, or is it just going to be a 6-man strike?

No, Im a big fan, don't get me wrong, just my set up with my consoles is much more comfortable than my PC currently

It's super-disappointing as a fan who is loving this game. A ton of work, craft, refinement and polish went into this game, and these premature reviews aren't doing it justice. It is Bungie's responsibility to hook people into this world from the beginning, however, and the story was really just a prologue, it felt like. Every design here feels built for the long term, but the nature of the review system we have is built for short term: movies, books, etc. What does a review of World of Warcraft mean now?

To be fair, this isn't just a Destiny issue. I had the same complaint with the bosses in Diablo 3. Although they don't take as long, it really comes down to 4players coming together and pouring on the firepower. In contrast, I remember Phantasy Star Online. It took team tactics to bring low even the first dragon. Concentrate on each leg, then take down the head.
It wasn't easy!
 
Not even paying attention to the reviews did a couple of Venus strikes last night with some people on here and a moon strike and it was fun as hell. I've not even started Venus yet.

That moon strike was intense. Came away with some awesome rare gear.

This is a good point, but it should also be considered that Destiny's primary method of content delivery is going to be paid expansions. So the reviews for the $60 chunk provided in the box are kind of justified in my opinion, as those future expansions aren't part of the core game so long as you need to pay extra for them. Who wants to pay $60 for a lukewarm setup to a story that is going to cost them additional dollars?

It's kind of like Diablo 3: it was just a platform at first, one that was expanded upon with the release of Reaper of Souls, but reviewing the $60 box game that consumers purchased was perfectly reasonable given its price.

Instances, daily, and weekly events are generally not found in rpgs. I've said this before, I'm not saying Destiny is an MMO, I'm saying it drew a lot of its ideas from mmorpgs.

Where's your review, n00bs? I'm intrigued: an expansion on your idea that the design of Destiny is forward thinking is most welcome.
 
The game is IMO a 8-8,5.
First game of this gen that I have really liked.
As an old mmo geek this struck a cord with me. Love playing with my mates and shooting shit while shooting the shit.
Like the companion app so I can read about fluff stuff on my phone.
Great gunplay and smart AI :)

Right, but this game isn't World of Warcraft and it's nowhere near as long. It's not going to have systems rebuilt and balanced over multiple years like Wow .... It's almost irrelevant that systems are built for the long term: as a standalone product, it clearly isn't achieving what it set out do.

Yeah, I completely agree that this isn't isolated to Destiny. In fact, I'd say the reason I much prefer Destiny as a loot-filled FPS RPG over Borderlands is that the average enemy here melts like butter in a great way, whereas even normal enemies are spongy in that game.

Bungie is probably hurting from what people have said, so I'm sure they'll put in some research on good boss mechanics and start developing some really solid stuff. I have faith in them, what's underneath some of the flaws here is one of my favorite shooters out there. Bungie just needs to dig it out from underneath some of the dirt.

Even if this is the first in a series of 10 games, the plot was still totally absent. Prologue doesn't even cover it, it was just badly written. A Song of Ice and Fire is 6 books long now with 2 more to go, A Game of Thrones was incredibly satisfying on it's own and stood up on it's own two legs. The first few hours of WoW were more substantial than all of Destiny.

The game is much better with a couple friends talking in chat...but the same can be said for nearly any game. In all honesty, if I didn't have people to play with I wouldn't be playing. The game really requires friends and it does everything possible to make it a pita to play with others.

That is an absolutely fair argument. And I did enjoy my time with the game. But the game is what it is. Every review and every opinion is valid outside of the extreme. If you enjoy it then take it to heart and there really isn't any need to concern yourself with perceived negativity. There is more Destiny to come, no doubt.

I'm planning on making a super-user review in a week or so, depending on how much of a grasp I have on the product being offered now. I think reviewing before trying the raid is unfair, since it is endgame content provided in the original release. I can't blame reviewers for either not being aware of that or simply needing to publish in a timely manner to stay relevant. I think the decision to not give reviewers early access was a huge mistake.
 
I feel like the worst part of the strikes are the reasons why you're actually supposed to do them.
Like, it's a LOOT game whose "end game" design after you finish the campaign for the very most part revolves around accumulating all kinds of currencies and xp so you can BUY legendary/exotic items at a zillion different VENDORS - items which in great loot games like D3 you actually loot from killed enemies. Oh, and then you have to grind for a whole set of other currencies/materials/artifacts just to upgrade these items for which you have already poured hours into the game.

And of course they've made it so you tend not to get good gear just by playing PvE. They very much know the only way to hook players until expansion nr. xx is by competitive multiplayer a la cod or by letting you grind towards a goal which at achieving immediately points you to a new set of goals.

This all wouldn't be too much of a problem though if what you're doing over and over again was actually interesting. But the way this game and its (current) content presents itself too often directs my awareness to what's behind the curtain - and it's ugly, horrible and insidious design.
 
The score seems to fall lower every time I check Metacritic. Still, 7/10 is what I'd give the game, that's a fair score, and not a bad score either. I've been playing Destiny solo over the last few nights and I've enjoyed it. That may be because I played the alpha/beta and saw the game for what it was. I wasn't hyped at all but I thought it was fun and I wanted to see the rest. It might also be because I've only spent an hour or two each night playing it, instead of grinding away with gritted teeth for days on end.

It doesn't even claim you saved the universe. The end of the game specifically states it's a day for speeches yet it means nothing. It's funny people complain about the little story there is yet don't even pay attention to what they are told in the game.

In the beginning it says the darkness is coming, in other words this is just the beginning. They know they can't hide behind the traveler and survive so they are lashing out against the darkness. That was just the first fight in a much larger war according to the game and it's pretty plain about it too.
 
So about the sequel, you guys think these reviews are gonna do some permanent damage to the series and the public's opinion of it? There were tons of people on the fence during E3 and the beta and these reviews confirmed a lot of our fears about the game. I really doubt they're gonna sway opinion back as fast and as well as they like. But then again, I think it'll have a lot to do with how sites/forums talk about in the coming weeks. If Destiny is kinda forgotten, then I doubt it, but if the media emphasizes the hype and $500 million budget behind it, I think Activision will have a slight problem. It'll also be interesting to see how it does when CoD and the MCC launch. That could harm it's longevity some because if people are playing it during a dry spell, I doubt DLC will pull 'em back. If they charge for it, I doubt it pulls even half of the amount of people that leave in the fall/winter.
 
This game is seriously the Beats by Dre of video games. All marketing, average quality.

How can a game so hyped, with such a budged be so devoid of content?

I just beat it today, got to level 20, and I guess I can go grind for a while.
It's fun playing with friends, and punching enemies is great, but that's it.

The "story" is abysmal, and destroys some great potential narrative that could have been, there are really only 3 types of missions that get used over and over again. The same enemies are constantly spawned, etc...

These are like 2003 game mechanics for a small developer with a tight budged.

I honestly had no idea it was only meant for co-op play, and ran into a number of very tough sequences where it was apparent that the bosses were meant to be beaten with a group.
They needed to be lured towards the edge of the 'no respawn zone', which they refuse to go past and shot a million times to kill.

Of course, I might have been better informed if I'd played the beta or if Bungie hadn't embargoed the reviews.

That is some heavy heavy hyperbole right there. The first few hours of wow are spent hacking at minions and reading meaningless text logs. The definition of boring.

Not finding your description very compelling, to be honest, and that is what I took away from it.
 
70s isn't bad scores, but you see Bungie, I told you this would happen if you made an mmo-shooter instead of staying closer to your core of fans so-to-speak.

This right here sums up my problem with the game. I don't have a friends list I keep up with. I've never needed one and I've never been one to socialize while playing a game. That Destiny forces me to be actively engaged with my friends list is bad enough, but that it doesn't give me an even half decent opportunity to build one is what's really the nail in the coffin for me.

Ridiculous design choices. A game like this should be as accessible as possible. But it's not. In order to really enjoy it, it requires you to know other gamers who can align their schedule with you.

It's selling well on my facebook. The real world isn't gaf. People don't pay attention to stuff bungie said two years ago. It's a game to play with friends and even just people I only know on facebook are loving destiny. I run a restaurant and it's spreading like wildfire through my employees that game as well.

I'm not sure if this is a loud minority or if most people on gaf are unhappy with Destiny but my real life experiences are entirely different.

I keep hearing this complaint yet on the same page is a thread full of people playing Destiny on neogaf who will team up with you. I had 15 friends on ps4 pre destiny. I now have 140. And they are all nice people so far. Really this is just sour grapes if you can't be bothered to click on a link and add names.
 
I stopped playing the game halfway through since two days, don't feel like returning again.

Its disappointingly repetitive and boring, can't be bothered to play it anymore. (Wish I bought the disc instead of digital version so I could sell it :< )

And that's strange cause I loved the beta, but maybe my expectations where flawed.

Everybody I know that plays games is pretty apathetic towards it.

But anecdotal evidence doesn't really matter, its highly probable that Destiny is selling extremely well, it would be surprising and shocking if it wasn't.

I felt the same way, but I thought the second half of Venus and the first half of Mars was pretty great

In fairness, a game can be hollow no matter how big it is. And pvp to pvp BF 4 is a lot bigger. Actually between all the BF 4 maps it wouldn't surprise me if it had as much square footage as destiny's campaign.

Nod. I couldn't imagine playing this game solo, but I would say the same about Borderlands (not that it is exactly the same).

You cannot get ressed because you have no friends to do it. You do not get to ping/pong supers back and forth without a friend. OH you generated 4 orbs of light, cool I guess...no one cares.

An query about the bullet-sponge boss complaint: How long are we talking about to take one down in time terms? I'm just thinking through what I regard as acceptable on a WoW scale. Patchwerk, the absolute canonical 'bullet sponge' boss equivalent in WoW explicitly has a six minute enrage timer. In a sense it's a dull fight, but it's a fight based entirely around the DPS getting the absolute maximum they can out of their abilities to meet that enrage timer (at least on first kills). I think six minutes is acceptable. At the other end of the scale there's a rather interesting, challenging, complicated fight, which I think just about holds up even though our (mediocre) guild takes a good fifteen to twenty minutes to take it down, because the other mechanics of the fight keep us alert and interested.

For a first kill of a good example of a bullet sponge Destiny boss, how long are we looking at?

I've already explained why I doubt you. I'd wager you have the most posts in this thread by a country mile. That's pretty weird for someone who has spent exactly zero time with the game.

Youre really just trolling with comments like Destiny doesn't have as much content as pso. If you actually played Destiny you would know that comparison is ridiculous. It's like saying super meat boy has more levels than super Mario world.
